I take it that this is a bona fide installer? I've just read over the net that there are fake installers that install viruses onto your computer.

Internode wouldn't host files with viruses in them

One will hope that Valve will release "distributable packs". Or, something with a similar meaning. They've said that if you buy Half-Life 2 in shops, then that'll be your way of filling up your local cache, as opposed to downloading it after buying it online. Therefore surely they'd be able to release things like DoD and CS in packs which can then be distributed on cover CD's, to sites like Internode, etc.

So, this Steam thing...

This is the end of being able to download a CS patch to my file server and hand it out to 20 mates at a LAN. Right?

And there goes any possibility of downloading the patch for free off Internode's servers. Right?

This means when I reinstall Windoze because it's crapped over itself, I'll have to download everything again. Right?

As far as I can tell, Steam just means pain and suffering for me, and that we'll never play higher than CS 1.5 at any game day. I can't see any good side to it so far.

Why so resistant of change? It's been out less than a day, you know next to nothing about it but people are labelling it 'the end of CS'.

Do you really think Valve would release something that is going to destroy their most popular product?

Why don't you actually try something before you declare it the anti-christ.
