GameStop Required to Warn Pre-Owned Buyers About One-Time DLC

Unread postby News Portal » 12 Apr 12, 10:02 am

GameStop stores in California will now be required to have warnings posted, both online and in stores, warning buyers of pre-owned products that further costs may be incurred for DLC. This comes after complaints that game cases would advertise "free DLC" that had already been redeemed by the original owner, requiring the buyer to pay more for a product they felt they already owned. Members of GameStop's rewards program will also be given $15 they might have used on DLC, in a combination of cheque and coupon, depending on their level of membership.

This is quite logical but I think that most people are wise enough to know without a label telling them.

How stupid are people these days, buying a pre-owned game and expecting to get the free content that is given to people who actually purchased the game new.
It's like walking into a Second-hand store and expect to get all the little extras that a product was shipped with but wasn't included when someone got rid of it.

It's a bit of a false advertising kind of thing. The box says I get this DLC, so why don't I?

While it might be naive to assume you get one-time DLC with a second hand game, effectively advertising that you will get the DLC when you don't is still bad.

I hope EB, JB and Game are taking notes and preparing their own warnings.

The problem with that is usually the free DLC advertisement or whatever is printed on the cover of the game, by their respective publishers. For them to remove the promotion or what not from the cover they would need to put stickers over it or cut it out, and even then most people I know that purchase games from stores usually dislike price stickers or other types of stickers on the games after they purchase them and remove them.

This is stupid. The world is getting more and more dumb. "I bought a game marked pre-owned and I am upset because it has been used."

They aren't upset that it has been used, they are upset that they have to pay extra for content advertised as free on the packaging.
