AMD Retires ATI; Internet Largely Unmoved, Confused

Unread postby News Portal » 31 Aug 10, 2:55 am

If your super-mega-beast of a gaming PC sports an ATI banded graphics card, look upon it with affection, nostalgia and well-wishes, for soon, such relics will be a thing of the past. Four years after their acquisition of the brand name to beat, AMD have decided that it's time to retire the label once synonymous with rebellion against market domination and powerhouse performance.

So they're just retiring the brand name yea? Their graphics cards should still be just as good, only branded differently, if I'm understanding it correctly.

It's think it's a pretty good move. Get more AMD name out there and more people might start buying their cpus.

That's how I took it when I read about it in the Tech sub-forum.

I still reckon they should have called their video cards VooDoo. (I still have my voodoo2 8mg graphics accelerator card).

Meh. Small company swallowed by big company. Digestion complete.

I hear that MS bought infineon. Now that's news.

Oh a little sad to see ATI to go, but I honestly thought it would of happened sooner.

I think however they should have branded the graphics cards as AMD/ATI Radeon on the boxes to make it clearer and a nicer path to removing ATI from the box.

They should ditch AMD and change their CPU to ATi, ATi sounds much cooler. with the lower case i and everything( seems to be the cool thing atm).

Great because my boss thinks AMD are a cheap product she will now stop buying AMD/ATI graphics, I dont think she made the connection that ATI was AMD but now she will know for sure. You would find the irony in that when we are primarily a second-hand dealer for PC's.

just think about this, where all laptops that came with Intel CPU's and ATI graphics, it will now be called AMD graphics :D

that should help amd's brand name.

As long as they keep making powerful low priced cards i don't care.

Not that i buy ATI but they are the reason i get Nvidia cards cheaper than Nvidia would be selling them without the competition.
