Xbox 360 Slim refuses to overheat, eats saves

Unread postby News Portal » 22 Jun 10, 10:07 am

It is now [news=9328]literally impossible[/news] for the Xbox 360 slim to RROD, but that doesn't mean it can't doorstop itself - just that it will find some other way to let you know. Thankfully lessons have been learned all round, and [comp=2]Microsoft[/comp] have implemented some new measures to protect users against potential hardware failure, like anti-overheating shut down.

It sounds like a much better solution. Why didn't they do that in the first place, hmmm?

Fast-forward 12 months time and everyone will be whining about losing their game process and "Why can't MS design a Xbox 360 degrees celsius that stays cool?" LOL

I hope it really is just a "worse case scenario" feature though. Surely they would make sure this design was thoroughly tested and bulletproof.

Otherwise the next generation XBox branded machine might be a hard sell to those caught out this time around.

Its a solution but something I'd call a better solution is no overheating, no RROD and no automatic shut down :D

Besides, it should be made to auto-save before shutting down, that would solve one headache. Of course, shutting down and interfering with my game play is not going to make me happy (whether it auto-saves a game or not) but if it actually saves the hardware then I'll mute my frustration.

Haha yeah, instead of RROD your xbox just stops working. Awesome!

Most XBOX games are pretty good at saving at important points. Will still suck if it happens but at least they're making it fail more elegantly this time.

Wonder if they'll make a Slim/Crackdown 2 bundle. :D

Maybe it hibernates (saves state to HD)?

Well they say the insides are designed alot better now so that it should avoid getting that hot. Maybe its only for people who insist on stuffing it inside closed spaces or between tons of other electonics.

All depends on how often it happens I guess :) . Don't forget, you lose your saves when it RROD's as well :p

They could make the system send a message to the game to save...

They'd have to lower the threshold further to do this as the time it takes the game/system to save the state of the game is more time it's building up heat, potentially causing more problems.
One would hope the first time it happens to someone they'll do something about the problem so that it doesn't happen again anyway...

Seems like a perfectly fine solution tbh. If you're not giving your Xbox the ventilation it needs, why should Microsoft be responsible when it overheats?

Hmmm, I don't see this as much of a solution as I know people who have had it ventilated well and it still gets the RROD.

I'm unsure if microsoft event know the complete problem yet we still get microsoft refurbished ones come in that come back straight away or RROD in the store first go.

Should have done a product recall first time, I will not be recommending the new one to ANY customers. Add to the fact that the machine is quite old now and technologically speaking is quite behind the times. Means we'll mostly just have the xbox & halo fans buying them this time around.

I haven't read the links so maybe the info's there, but from the GoN editorial I can't see how this 'eats saves', and if it did then I assume saving would be of no use. As far as I can tell it simply turns off if overheating, which means you lose unsaved progress, which is a bit different to the 360 eating (which I assume means corrupting/deleting) your saves. Am I missing something?

Because they weren't done right. I had one RROD with it sitting on a table in beautifully cool air.
The new ones are (hopefully) done right.

As opposed to the Wii, which is technologically behind both 360 and PS3 and outsells both combined?
The 360 and PS3 are about level pegging. Until the next generation of consoles come out they're all going to be "behind the times", for whatever that trite expression is worth.
