Where to Start?

Unread postby SgtCarlMc » 25 Apr 12, 12:36 pm

Hi all, just joined,as I am 60, and I know you can't read fast so I'm typing this slowly with one finger, just as in my games, mouse and one finger.

I have a Intel duo core 2 I5 2500 3.3 ghz, Gigabyte H61M-SP2, OS Windows XP 32 bit, 4 GB DDR3 RAM, 1 GB Radeon HD 6770.

I am on level 55, Argonian, and I can't play my game anymore, whenever I click on play, it crashes to desktop or if I get in,it is a black screen

I must have read over a 1000 posts, watched over a 100 you tubes for advice on why I can't play and I'm still none the wiser. I am not computer literate, nor jargon wise, not into multiplayer,DLC, I buy all my games through EB Games, who understands my gaming needs, other-words won't sell me a game that I can't play, ( one finger, LOL )

I believe this all started after Steam updated with a patch and ever since, no way ho'zay, even gone to nexus forums for links, but they were not there anymore, file hidden by author, what ever that means, you would think he would help ppl in jams like myself who need ppl like him for advice.

I have followed all Steam Supports guidelines, DX 10, etc etc, but still nothing works, they even directed me to Bethesda which was last resort, I don't think they'll refund me my purchase dollars

Question, Have I a dud game?
Thanx in advance for your answers and listening to an old geezer

Was going to ask what the error log said, but then remembered I haven't been able to find one...

Seems like something got messed up by a patch.

Things to try:
Reset all settings down to minimum.
Update gfx drivers.
Reinstall Skyrim.

It could be anything really.. well its not steam version so you can't verify game integrity. Do you have any mods installed? If so disable those and try it.

Are you not getting into the game menu at all? Does the game crash before the game even loads? If it's crashing before the game loads then I would suggest doing what Andre said.

If you can get into the game though but it crashes when you hit continue, have you tried starting a new game to see if that works? If that works then I would say your save game is bloated and borked.

One thing I would suggest would be to add the Unofficial Skyrim Patch and maybe going back to a previous save game if you have one and seeing if you can play from there. If it still doesn't work, then maybe time to restart... but best of all with that unofficial patch, things should work the way they are meant to now.

Good Luck.

I have downloaded the patch and it says to install in data files in Skyrim Launcher, when I open the box, there are no files of any sort in there, should it be empty?

I have gone into my Steam Acc. and my verify cache files have been updated, I do not have a steam game downloaded on my PC, mine is a disc version

After reading posts on Bloated files, it would seem my memory is totally full.

Where do I find where the memory is?

Is it wise to paste Unoff. patch inside Data Files box, when it is empty?

Thanx for quick response, I will re-install later today, after saving "saves" first, I really would hate to start all over again after getting this far, getting that Skeleton key was a Quest in itself

Not sure I understand what you mean there. Do you mean you downloaded the file but it was empty or it didn't open?

It might be that you don't have the .7z (7ZIP) program needed to uncompress the files. You can go here : http://www.7-zip.org/download.html and download the installer for XP (the 32bit version).

You shouldn't need that program if you install it with a Mod Manager, as looking inside the compressed file it is looking for a Mod Manager to install it and then in that case I would suggest using the Nexus Mod Manager at SkyNexus.

I realised after I posted my comment, but even though yours is a Disc version it should be linked to your steam account, I'm pretty sure the game has to be now. What you can do if you don't want to install it via the Mod Manager option above, is to access the Steam Workshop and search for the Unofficial Patch or just follow this link : http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/f ... yrim+Patch

and all you need to do is subscribe to the file and it should automatically install the mod/patch.

Not sure you can fix the bloating once it has started. :? The was a mod on the nexus that was a de-bloatifier, but it hasn't been updated since the last patch and probably won't work anymore (and after reading some of the comments for it, might have caused more probs then it solved) but then the unofficial patch might save it anyway.. Again, not sure what you mean by empty... but try installing the patch via the Steam Workshop and then giving the game a try before reinstalling.

Wish I knew how to work out the quote reply system, too much info,25 boxes?

Have to try and remember answers

When I click on shortcut on my screen
The Skyrim game opens on screen
The choices in the opening says

Play

Options

Data

Credits

Support? I really don't want to click on game, opening up steam, and Steam uploading Unofficial Skyrim patch before I have a chance to save my games

I have followed your links and subscribed to Steam workshop and clicked on UK??
and it said next time I enter game it will automatic download patch

But first, I wish to SAVE my present games/files but don't know where they are?

On the description of the SkyRim Patch, it says

The only requirement is to move Unofficial SkyRim patch.esp to the top of the load order in Data files in the SkyRim Launcher (above any other ESP. files but after any ESM files if there are any)so the USKP loads first.

When I open Skyrim Launcher it takes me to the Skyrim Game Box, the one that says, Play, Options, Data, Support, Credits, so I click on Data and the box is empty.

Now, if I click on c:hard drive, program files,Steam, steam apps, common, skyrim,

next folder has inside it Data,DotnetFX, Skyrim,DirectX10, Reslists,VCRedist, Skyrim Launcher.exe, TESV.exe and other files

Is this Data file the one they, and you, (USKP) are talking about?

I do not have any Mods in my game, I wish to save my games(where-ever they are?) before doing anything

I am quite chuffed in having an Administrator answering my questions, you really don't know how much this means to me,us Geezers need all the help we can get,

I like SkyRim but I never knew it had so many problems until Steam up/down loaded that first patch and my game stopped playing, it could be something else but it was too coincidental, I got to Level 55 without all these glitches, sounds, shades, distance, video cards,Nvidia,Radeon compatibility,Windows XP, Windows 7, Windows Vista, 32 bit, 64 bit, 2GB Ram, 4 GB Ram, 8 GB Ram

Merrily playing away, then nothing but problems, problems, problems, searching for answers answers answers I've got You-Tube blues

I am now thinking of upgrading to Nvidia because Bethesda has made Skyrim compatible with Nvidia graphic cards, thanx Bethesda

Enough of my ranting,
Thank-you for the heads up

You don't need to backup your save files if you are just adding the unofficial patch.

The unofficial patch won't appear in the relavent box until it is downloaded. That won't happen until you try to run the game.
