Which Workshop Mods?

Unread postby Sathias » 19 Feb 12, 7:29 pm

Thought it would be a good idea to start a thread so people can post which mods they are using, what sort of mods people are looking for and the like :)

I'm currently using

SkyUI - Improves the Skyrim inventory management

Sounds of Skyrim - Adds heaps of ambient sound effects to the dungeons, very atmospheric

House Map Markers - Map markers so you can quickly return home

Stones of Barenziah Map Markers - Add map markers for the stones rather than having to search every nook and cranny of the whole world

Follower Fixer Lite - Fixes lots of follower AI bugs

Shenk Thievery Overhaul - Adds lots of thief related content such as extra loot, guards for stores and rich houses, rooftop access, rival thieves.

What I'm really after is a mod which improves the way hotkeys work, I've started a dual wielding dagger rogue/illusionist and the hotkeys are driving me nuts :x

I'm not sure if all the mods i'm using are on the Workshop, personally i'm sticking with Nexus, but i'll list them anyway.

A Quality World Map
Detailed world map with visible roads and highways. Good for navigating.

Alternate Sun Glare
Slightly different sun glare, not so much in your face.

Better Sorting
Makes going through your inventory so much easier, changes things like 'Iron Arrow' to 'Arrow - Iron', 'Potion of Healing' to 'Restore Health - II' etc.

Categorized Favorites Menu
This mod is one of the best imo, expands the favourites menu with subcategories: Magic, Potions, Shouts etc. Also includes "Equip sets" for equipping different sets of favorited items. This might help your hotkey problems Sathias

Complete Crafting Overhaul
Adds all missing gear & crafting recipes, make arrows & faction gear, complete rebalance. Is good.

Enhanced Blood Textures
Much better detailed blood textures and decals. Must have for melee imo.

Enhanced Distant Terrain
Really small mod, adds noise to distant terrain texture maps, looks much better.

Lush Grass
Makes grass look more dense & full, doesn't impact performance either.

Lush Trees
Makes forests more dense by adding extra branches and needles to pine trees.

Realistic Ragdolls and Force
Self explanatory, much better ragdoll physics, no more catapulting bears from an arrow.

Realistic Water Textures and Terrain
This is a really nice mod, water looks a lot better everywhere, oceans, rivers, lakes, waterfalls, foam, rain, ripples etc.

Smithing Perks Overhaul
Smithing perk fixes for item materials, it's part of the Complete Crafting Overhaul mod pack.

Static Mesh Improvement Mod
Better 3D models & textures for the smaller things like clutter, furniture and landscape objects.

Wars in Skyrim
Adds more random encounters, quicker respawns, new enemies and factions, more challenging NPC's. I was getting bored post level-40 even on Master difficulty, this mod changed that.

Weapons and Armor Fixes
Essential mod, fixes over a thousand incorrect weapon & armour properties.

Thanks, I downloaded the ambient sounds and follower fix.

I wish people would transfer their mods over to the Workshop from Nexus, though... I find it a lot more intuitive and easier to use.

Atm I'm not using much, just tinkering with the toolset myself, looking to see what people come out with.

Awesome! That sounds exactly what I'm after, cheers :) Might give a few others from your list a go too.

The workshop has a subscribe limit, and once you start using the bigger mods it's imperative you use NMM and BOSS to install mods manually from Nexus since Workshop just installs mods automatically with no warning about what files are being overwritten which can and will cause a lot of problems regarding load order and such.
It might be more intuitive and easier to use, but in the long run it's going to fail as the installation hub unless they implement something similar to NMM/BOSS.

Also workshop doesn't allow loose files to be uploaded, all of the textures and meshes need to be in a .bsa, and those are a serious issue down the line as .bsa's load alpha-numerically, not according to the mod list which loads according to date created. Also, .bsa's overwrite any loose files when its activated, which is why if you have the high-res official DLC you need to edit your skyrim.ini and include it as a primary .bsa (so that it loads first), else there is no point in having loose files as the high-res DLC contains the majority of textures ingame.

Also i have too many mods on at the moment, i need to go through and get rid of a few :P

I try to stay away from 'big mods' on Nexus. I find a lot of the **** on Nexus overly bloated, tbh. The Workshop restrictions are good in a way.

Like a commentator said today the extended slider mod on nexus is better than my red hair mod for doing red hair, but all that mod does is give you about a billion different colors to choose from, whereas all *I* wanted was a targeted few based on Leliana, Kelly, Triss etc.

So with Nexus you need mod managers and stuff because mod creators get you to download a million useless tweaks and loose files when you probably only want one. And I hate having to deal with loose files.

Maybe it's good if you want some real fancy texture mod, but that's not as big a deal with Skyrim as it was for previous games, especially after the official texture mod release. Here, I'm looking for small mods that do exactly what they say on the box and change the game in subtle ways.

Nexus mod manager is too useful to ignore for me, I like the control it has for load orders, updates, file conflicts and whatnot, i don't want to subscribe mods on the Workshop for fear of a mod doing it's own thing, auto-updating and overwriting other files and screwing up my install, probably paranoid but i avoid all of that using a proper mod manager.

I agree with you Marius on the big & bloated mods though, i prefer the smaller, subtle mods aswell, and there can be alot of **** to wade through on Nexus. That said, most of the big mods have a scripted GUI install for NMM which makes things simple.

So close yet so far.

a) You still can't hotkey anything to the left-hand, hotkey just replaces the right-hand.
b) Equipment set key requires the favourites menu open anyway. Might as well just click the items!

I can't believe that neither Bethesda nor modders have managed to solve this issue yet?
