Good Oblivion Mods

Unread postby m3thuselah » 26 Nov 07, 5:58 pm

Alrighty, I won't do it later so here it is. Your going to have to make a couple of accounts on websites to get this stuff and put in some effort. The most important is Francesco’s leveled items and creatures mod. But stuff like DarkUI is awesome and finally removing that stupid Oblivion fast travel (like so many crappy MMOs) replacing it with Morrowind travel is awesome too.

Have Fun. (everything after here isn't me talking :D)

So if you’re like me and either you are too cheap, your computer is too ****, or you generally don’t like the games coming out these days, there is always something you can fall back on. That something is Oblivion. I have since decided to reinstall oblivion, go through and painstakingly found all of the mods this game requires to not suck, and figured out a working load order and everything. I am however, not your average Games player, and as such I don’t really care about my character’s build or whatever, or anally getting everything in the game world. So as far as tips and strategies goes, or character builds, or good leveling mods, I am not the person to ask, but hopefully someone will be able to add something and I will quote them in the op!
For the sake of simplicity, I am going to assume you have Knights of the Nine and Shivering Isles expansions, although I don’t know if they really affect anything.

*1. Install Oblivion and then its expansions.
*2. IF you do have shivering isles, you do not need to get any patches. If you don’t here is the link for the patch. http://static.bethsoft.com/Oblivion...0416English.exe
*3. Download and install Oblivion Mod Manager, Found here http://timeslip.chorrol.com/current/obmm.zip This will help you to install oblivion mods and change the load order and all of that fun.
*4. Next, you better pick up the Oblivion script extender, in order to make oblivion compatible with some of the more complex mods. I am sure that my mod list doesn’t have any mods that require this though. The script extender can be found here. http://obse.silverlock.org/download/obse_0012.zip
*5. Next Download and install the unofficial oblivion patch. Found here http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=5296. Choose to get the installer version! Installation is pretty self explanatory.
*6. Now its time to get some mods! I have here the list of the mods that I am using, and probably isn’t the most popular load out, but all of these mods are great.

Remember, unless otherwise directed, install all mods to your C:Program Files/Bethesda/Oblivion/data folder. If they are in your data folder, oblivion mod manager will be able to keep track of them.

First and foremost, I highly recommend Francesco’s leveled items and creatures mod. Some prefer Oscuro’s oblivion overhaul, but I feel like Francesco’s isn’t so hardcore, and has a lot more options. Also if you get the optional additional content, it really adds a lot to the game in the way of creatures and items. Plus you can alter it to give you that Adrenaline-Oblivion feel where you face 5x as many creatures. The mod can be found here along with the additional content and more information
http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.c...tail&id=268

*Dark UI: Dark UI makes the interface much more user friendly for pc users, making it more immersive and allowing more objects on the screen at once. http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=7698

*Cyrodil Transportation Network: It adds the immersive transportation system of Morrowind to the world of Oblivion. It is now viable to get around without having to fast travel everywhere. You can catch rides from people with carts at almost every stable, there are mages at the guilds who can teleport you, and there are boats… somewhere but I have not found them yet. http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=4520

*Color map: It’s a color map. http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=1950

*Male nude textures mod: http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=5948
*Female nude mod: http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=2330

*Realistic ragdoll force: Ragdolls no longer just slump to the ground when killed, they now fall back and such. You can also carry bodies around by gripping the thighs http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=5011

*Skip tutorial: Use the hourglass on the table to skip the tutorial, you will be brought to a slightly altered sewer exit that has 2 chests with every item from the tutorial so you can still skip the tutorial but not be completely gimped. Make sure you wait long enough for all of the mods to load http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=10663

*Remove fast travel: http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=1792

*Unique landscapes: Custom landscapes altered in the game to be better looking. They pretty much transform boring old oblivion into an awesome looking landscape to explore. Seriously, its THAT good. They also come in omod format which makes them easy to install! http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=8688

*Beautiful people:
Adds new eyes to the game, new races, new hairtypes, does other things Im not really sure, I just got it for the extra races. http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=5175

*Deadly reflex: Complete combat overhaul, check the site for more info http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=8273

*Atmospheric weather systems: Adds a bunch of different weather patterns to oblivion, generally makes oblivion look even better. http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=6730

*Natural Environments: Improves the game visually in the environment department. Foliage, wildlife, weather and water all look significantly better.
http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=2536

So yeah, that’s all I got. The oblivion subforum is pretty much dead, and I was hoping that by making a thread we could consolidate all oblivion discussion and bring it back out into the mainstream. If someone has a funny oblivion anecdote, a mod the recommend, additions to the op, or just some advice, by all means please post!
Also this is my first OP so yeah sorry if it sucks.

The only think that list is missing is a levelling mod, Oblivions levelling system sucks. I recommend AFLevelMod.

drallim wrote:One thing that really annoyed me with Oblivion (among many other things) was that when I played as a thief, there was nothing worth stealing. I swear I looked everywhere I could think of for something valuable, but all the decent weapons / armor were replicas, except the occasional ring or or scroll something.

In a desperate attempt to find a mortar & pestle better than novice quality, I snuck undetected into the grand high poobah archmage's tower, because if anyone was going to have one, it would be him. He had a novice mortar & pestle.

Add to this that you can go and do one easy quest to obtain an uber-lockpick that never breaks, and you have pretty much eliminated any reasons for playing as a thief type character.

Do any of these mods address this problem?

It's still a great game but it doesn't hold a candle to morrowind

Hey.

You can try
Thieves Arsenal
http://tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=9655

and

Thievery in the Imperial City
http://tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=5156

You're right. Where I said it made the game into Morrowind 2 up above I laid it on a bit thick. I loved in Morrowind how there was that massive wall covering the centre part, you could only get over it much later when you had the skills/magic. A couple of times I saw it in earlier travelling and it really inspired awe and 'omg I wonder wtf is over that..'. Motivated you to keep playing and solve this mystery. It wasn't scripted! So I just saw this wall and decided I wanted to get in there, making the quest my own and it way more interesting than 'go and kill 12 slaughterfish' (did this last night.. ugh). Also, LEVITATION! I eventually got enough Grand Soul Gems to make myself a constant effect ring of levitation. Yep, the Superman ring that allowed me to fly wherever (and quickly too!). Too many times I nearly pooed myself with laughter when I would murder or steal something in town, have all the guards run at me from all directions and I would shoot up into the sky and throw food at them from above. No levitation in Oblivion.. boo..

Nemesis_22 wrote:I'd also recommend getting Oscuro's Oblivion Overhaul. Completely changes the game, makes it much, MUCH harder. Instead of creatures levelling with you, and getting bandits wearing the best stuff in the game, it changes just how tough they are and changes the spawns. So, a level one might decide to run off any old place, encounter an ogre much more powerful, and get utterly broken by it. However, by the same token, a level 30 character won't go and find minotaurs lurking everywhere. Its harder to level up in, but much more rewarding. It also adds a simply monstrous slew of new creatures, equipment, quests, spells, the works.

Yeah, it's basically Franceso's vs OOO. Both are mods that address the leveling enemies and most people say they prefer Franceso's (don't install both!)

I'll give you this post from the SA forums about it:

SA Forums wrote:They're basically two solutions to the problems of 'Enemies get better equipment and stats as I do'.

The Oscuro answer is 'Remove all the scaled stuff and just put arbitrarily levelled things in every dungeon'. Including a **** boss that can one-shot you in the first dungeon.

The Francesco answer seems to be a far more logical 'lets see what we can do with this level-scaling' and fills the levelled lists with more intelligent stuff. So rather than encountering the same bandits only in enchanted armor, you'll encounter a large pack of poorly equipped bandits, led by a fairly well armed chief. The game still remains challenging throughout, but the encounters scale and change intelligently for the most part.

Basically, if you think that an RPG should be played with fingers hovering over the quicksave/load buttons at all times, Oscuro is the answer. If you prefer a more freeform, sandboxy game where you can do things largely on your own terms, Francesco.

I vastly prefer the latter.

Me too.

Just a quick bump to this, the extra texture threads aren't listed so I thought I'd add em.

I reinstalled Oblivion and ended up installing most of the mods listed above, so I thought I'd split these posts out of the original thread in case it gets pruned.

As discussed in the other thread, the OP comes from a post on the Something Awful forums.

Enjoy :)

Anyone got a list of Mods they're running for me to have a quick glance at, It's been a while since I've played and I've since forgotten all the good mods, haven't checked updates etc.

unofficial SI and Vanilla patches
Natural environments - it's the bomb of looks
Kobus character advancement system - completely redefines the levelling system for the better, no more grinding required
Franseco's creatures mod - again making the creature system much better
several of the knights of the nine package, not all though. I thought the new castles ones like deepscorn detracted from parts of the game like the whole vampire quests etc.
Immersive wait - adds a stool for you too wait on whilst watching everything fly by around you, really cool
inebriation - drinking in oblivion substitutes it for the real world ;)

enjoy.

Francesco's and Kobu's work together? Cool, I think I used Kobu's back in the day. Inebriation sound found too :P

Re: Good Oblivion Mods

Unread postby Sathias » 20 Sep 08, 10:50 am

I thought I'd add to this as I recently built a new set of mods which I am pretty happy with.

I based my selection from the URL below, and I've listed my selection for each section.

http://www.bethsoft.com/bgsforums/index ... pic=790175

1]
First of all I installed all my official mods and the expansion kit, and got the game patched to the latest version.

2] For the basic interface I'm using DarkUId DarN and wz inventory.

3] To modify the level and monster scaling I installed Francescos and Quest Award Leveller

4] I hate having to metagame to maximise multipliers, so I installed AF Mod to make levelling more natural. I also thought I'd give the Race Balancing Project a go, and I was very impressed. One of the best Oblivion mods I've ever seen, the extra races look better than the base ones. The changes to the races and signs are very well thought out too.

5] I didn't install Unique Landscapes, as every one needs to be installed seperately so it is a bit of PITA.

6] Harvest Flora makes picking herbs for Alchemy less annoying. Visually Enchanted Weapons gives enchanted weapons a glow, and Initial Glow removes the glow from armour, which looks a bit poxy. Tamriel's NPCs Revamped gives all NPCs a unique look, some of them look a bit weird but overall its a bit of an improvement. Natural Environments improves the weather somewhat, amongst other things.

7] There are some really good mods out there that modify and improve the magic system. I went with Less Annoying Magic Experience (LAME). I've also downloaded Midas Magic but I haven't played around with it yet.

8] There are several programs you will need to get these mods to work correctly. One is Oblivion Mod Manager, it allows you to modify your load order of your mods a lot easier. I recommend putting all the official mods and larger mods such as Francesco's closest to the bottom of the list as possible, as then they will load last. The other is Oblivion Script Extender, it provides extra functionality that many mods use. Put it in your Oblivion directory and use it to start the game instead of the normal exe.

9] There are extra textures you can get which greatly improve the visual quality of the outdoor environments, with little performance hit. There is an excellent page on this here. I went for Better Tiling 2048 LOD Textures, Qarl's Compressed 4096 LOD Normal Maps and Koldorn's LOD Noise Replacer. You can install World Textures as well, but I have elected not to at this stage because it is a bit of a performance hit. There is a good page on it here.

10] At this stage I haven't elected to install any 3rd party quests, but there are heaps out there. There is a great page on this here.

11] Finally I installed Quest Popup Remover, which gets rid of the annoying pop-up status messages from quests. I installed this last as several other mods overwrite it if you do it earlier.

Happy Oblivioning :) :dodgy:

I'm in the process of installing the FCOM mod, which is basically a combination of OOO, Francesco, MMM, and War Cry with a bunch of other smaller mods chucked in. Will let you know how it goes.

i'm glad I found this thread :) I'm planning on starting Oblivion but I heard about how you need tons of mods to make the game better and was on my way to make a thread just like this :)

is there any updates I should know of since this thread is farely old now, I mean like any better combinations of mods than what's listen above etc?

also it seems I need to register to get stuff from tesnexus, is that normal?

one of the links doesn't work in the original thread, the one for unique landscapes

but yea, thanks for making this thread all that time ago, i'm looking for the best possible Oblivion experience (both gameplay and graphically) cheers

also what's with the afleveling mod? I looked up the site and it's talking about how Oblivion originally leveled up :S
