where did you install in btw? I normally install everything direct on C:\ rather than in prog files because of all the security issues. maybe thats why.

Not at home to check, but I would have installed in the default directory though (whatever that is). Maybe give that a go?

Edited to add: Also mine is a DVD copy of the game, not a Steam version.

thanks mate - might try that. By default it goes to the prog files (x64) or something director. I have read somewhere on the net that this also causes problems as well sometimes given there's two prog file directories (with and without the x64 tag).

anyway, see how we go aye? :)

I don't install any of my games in Program Files x86 or x64 ... even with UAC off the nanny state controls over that folder aren't worth the hassle.

My games are installed to a Games folder instead of Program Files (also on a separate partition, but that's not necessary).

BF2 being defaulted to Program Files x64 is full of fail, as it is a six year old 32 bit game anyway. Windows is still as stupid as ever if its doing that.

When installing BF2, don't forget to patch to 1.41 first, then 1.50 afterwards.

The Steam version should update automatically.

Program Files - 64 bit programs games go in this one.
Program Files (x86) - 32 bit programs games go into this one.

I run a 64 bit W7Ultimate and don't have a problem with BF2 and it's a standard install I also have the DVD version if that helps not much of a help though, and UAC is also off. :)
