London Olympics 2012

Unread postby JonDogg » 4 Aug 12, 11:06 am

There was already a topic about swimming and the Chinese girl, but this is more general. That was only about swimming which I'm sick of seeing and hearing about as Channel 9 and all the news's only show and talk about swimming. At least today is the last day. But on that related topic it seems as the swimmers are under-performing. James Magnussen was disappointing.

Also the badminton 'tanking' debacle where 4 teams were disqualified. C'mon, glad they got disqualified. It would have been a joke to watch some of the best players in the world deliberately hitting the **** into the net or out.

Overall so far it has been good to watch the Olympics every night, even on Channel 9.

Just wondering if anyone knows what the new Badminton format actually looked like?

Without seeing it I'm having trouble working out why they would be better off losing matches? I can only assume that it works differently to something like the World Cup, because in that format the top ranked team of each group plays the second ranked team of each group in the knockout stage which means there's no sense in dropping matches.

Anyway, same old same old as far as coverage goes. They waste time playing sports that either don't have an Australian competitor or just aren't interesting (anyone watch the heptathlon girls high jump for an hour zzz...) and only cut to the Australian mens volleyball team for about 5 points.

You should check out the Foxtel Olympics app, it's **** amazing - you need a valid Foxtel or Austar login (I stole my parents from down in NSW's for instance) but it allows you to stream all 8 channels straight to you ipad as well as having a schedule and results. Seriously impressed with it.

I'm not impressed with our ridiculous lack of Gold though!

If you want to see pommie athletes all the time then yeah.

EDIT: I think this belongs in the Sports section by the way.

No, with 24 channels they're covering close to all of every event, Yes the commentators maybe UK centric but you don't have to listen to them.

that's so unfair, and it leads to one of the most aggravating things about the olympics. the way they kept asking those 4 swimming guys what went wrong over and over was **** disgusting. same goes for any other time they asked any other Australian the same thing. they just lost in the olympics, they don't need or want to talk about it with you as they're still exhausted from the race. it's channel 9 pushing for emotion and drama and I **** hate it.

overall the coverage has been fairly disappointing. they have 3 channels and are only showing one thing at a time.

they have been showing a few different sports, but the amount of rowing, swimming and equestrian they showed is amazing and unnecessary. when you listen to the commentary on the rowing you know there's nothing to show or say. the final part is the only interesting thing, and even then they end up saying the same thing over and over trying to add excitement to the race and just end up sounding like idiots.

I imagine they show swimming and rowing because lots of people like it because Australia typically goes relatively well in them. well they were wrong and they made the coverage worse because of it.

I have been watching quite a bit and I don't think I saw anything of some sports like handball, weightlifting, badminton, fencing. to me that's what the olympics is about. watching sports that you never have a chance to watch. not watching the same **** over and over (swimming, equestrian, rowing).

agreed on absolutely everything. Idiot TV presenters and journalists are in no position to whinge about "under-performing" Aussies, everybody talking about leisel jones' weight must have been heartbreaking for her. Arseholes...

I love seeing a variety of sports as well. My biggest annoyance so far has been that they played the womens high jump component of the heptathlon for about 45 minutes and it didn't even have a single Australian girl in it. Another time after watching a tonne of repetitive cycling sprints featuring one Australian they cut to Australia vs Italy in mens volleyball to show us THE FINAL POINT of the match. The Aussies had taken Italy to 5 sets, which is probably the most impressive performance we've ever produced in indoor volleyball and I got to see us lose the last point (I've actually seen half the Aussie team play at junior national competitions while I was paying there too so this really pissed me off).

Whilst I'm loathe to read New Ltd. sometimes, this article is interesting in that Chinese team pay big money to be trained by Australian-based coaches. Do our bleats of drug use start quietening down now?

http://www.news.com.au/sport/london-oly ... 6443207625

I read a couple of years ago of Australian coaches warning that Australia needed to increase it's spending on our sporting programs/institutions, otherwise our success would start disappearing over subsequent Olympics. Looks like it's coming true?

I also agree about the dismal coverage from Channel 9. The constant switching between sports is really annoying. I can't remember exactly how Channel 7 did it in 2008, but I'm sure it wasn't this bad.

The Foxtel coverage is much better than Channel 9's. Having said that though, its 8 channels don't hold a candle to the BBC's 24 though but it's the best available to Aussies.
