Useful links:

Scrapheap Challenge - mainly for Minmatar (go minmatar!) pilots but I suppose other races could learn a lot from how we think, how we fit our ships and tactics.

EVE Character Creation Tool - this will help you figure out the best character to pick much quicker than the actual character creation tool.

eve[geek] - probably one of the more useful sites, allows you to calcuate shield regen, tanking abilities, mining yield, drone damage and all sorts of wonderful things.

Some guys compilation of links - probably has links to anything else you might need.

I would have to say the EVE-Online official forums are probably the best place though sometimes they can get a bit crazy with so many people AND they don't work in downtime. :(

If you can't find the info you're after here PM me and I'll see if I can help. Beware I don't know much about mining and production though. :)

Untrue. 13 charisma is pretty useless if you don't want leadership skills. :)

Not true.

While there might not be a singular best, there are a handful of builds that are significantly better than all others.

For starting out now there's not a whole lot of reason to chose anything other than Caldari Achura or Amarr Khannid, unless you're aiming for running a corporation/alliance or specialising for Leadership (or roleplaying, ugh).

Even including those skills, Charisma is by far the least utilised attribute in the game and maximising it only gimps your character.

hah, barely true. sure in just ship and gun skills they are good, but when you actual need the powergrid, the cpu, the tanking ability, the lack of mem/int severely hurts those characters. in the short term they may be good, but sif the short term is the focus of eve. its blatant misunderstanding of those facts that has caused the glut of things like the caldari

I quite like my character who started with 12ish charisma... when I occasionally play her, that is.

The thing is gimped compared to what?

Back when I was regularly playing Kesa, she was very successful in earning ISK and generally shooting up stuff, and earned ISK faster than many starting characters (over 100 million in her first month). I don't see how that is a gimped start.

Maybe if I was a solo player it would matter, but in a group the most important thing is player time, not character abilities.

rofl yes.

But seriously, mission running isn't for everyone. Pretty much all of the people I know agree it is useless. But then again pretty much everyone I know is outlaw, so mission running isn't really something we do often. :)

Oh yeah, and the leadership+corp management+social skills can be maxxed out rather quickly, and they're pretty much one-time skills, I doubt there will be more of them soon. Implant-wise, +5 charisma is pretty cheap so anyone serious about boosting leadership/corp/social can just get one of those.

I'd rather have the ability to train skills for new ships, new guns, cross training so I can fly all the recons, etc. :)

I picked my character based upon what sounded cool in the descriptions of the little career paths... I didn't pay attention to the bonuses. :D I guess that's why I've got reasonably low perception, oh well, nothing the learning skills and implants can't fix.

I'm the same as the guy above me, just picked what felt right. Far too nooby to know any better.

Would love to find a noob friendly clan though, are there any aussie ones out there that don't care if I haven't got a clue?

Thanks Jeat but I've already found a corp... Covenant of the Xeno, a recently acquired corp which is now the training arm of the Equitatus of the Apocalypse.

They're brilliant, spent three hours last night in lowsec with two other noobs learning how to hunt with scanners... our CEO took out an old tugboat and played our prey. They're extremely helpful and I'm learning new stuff every minute I'm on!

This has added +1000000 to the longevity of this game for me.

Finding a good group of people to work with is the best thing in Eve, it makes things some much easier working together no matter what you do in the game... and the TS banter is funny.
