Salvage is worth it,

mainly if you can salvage as you go (like with a Marauder or a 2nd char as a salvage ship)

Meta 4 and above (ie faction) - always sell
Anything under meta 4 is usually reprocessed to minerals...

I use a catalyst (destroyer) for salvaging certain level 4 missions if the loot is worth it. But a marauder is the ticket if you have the skills for it.

The noctis is completely awesome... I made about 60 mil in under an hour just following a char around sanctums...

Calling it now... The noctis will crash mineral and rig prices... Can only be a good thing :P

I spend all my time in WH's so the dedicated salvage ship other than my thrasher is a godsend. especially as all sleeper income is through loot/salvage.
one c4 anom later and each member of my 4 man team is up by 40 mill
and that's just ONE

In missions and sanctums it is about how quickly you can finish the spawns. We good skills and knowledge you can usually finish killing everything significantly faster then the time it would take you to salvage everything. Generally under these circumstances I only salvage BS wrecks and will continue with the mission and go through the next gate. So in this case salvage is only supplemental income - good for paying faction ammo costs.

The exceptions to this as when you dual box with a salvage ship, then the salvage ship has the time and space to get everything. The Hurricane with AB is popular. But generally I find if you are dual boxing you are better off using two marauders, or a DPS ship with a Domi or Ishtar giving sentry drone support.

Killing spawns faster generally is always better isk/hour over all and safer for your ships. My main ship a Vargur does roughly 1100 DPS and can hit frigates out to 90km with it's 800mm autocannons, when it has 5 max skilled sentry drones added to it for another 450 odd DPS, it just clears level 4 faster then you would believe.

I don't bother looting or salvaging. I clear a ring sanctum in 24 minutes and a station sanctum in under 40 minutes. This equates to roughly 70 - 80 mil an hour so therefore it is better for me to keep going and forget about salvaging.

EDIT : I used my noctis to salvage and loot everything in a station sanctum last night. I would have probably made 30 - 40 mil in loot and salvage within 30 minutes of clearing the site.

So......

40 minutes to clear station sanctum
30 minutes to loot and salvage

Actual earnings per 1 hour 10 minutes would be 70 - 80 million

Still more isk using a carrier or dual box Paladins per hour... single Paladin can bring you about 120mil an hour easily.
