Aubrey and Maturin (Master and Commander)

Has anybody read these books?
My dad is as obsessed with the series (21 books, written over like.. 30 years) as I am with the West Wing (anyone long timers on the forum will know how much that is).

I've just started, about halfway through the second book and I'm completely enamoured, despited having to re-read every single page at least twice, and many many paragraphs 3-4 times before having a vague understanding (god damned masts, bells, watches, ranks.. SO CONFUSING)

My dad has given me his 4 books explaining all the different terms, his 3 biographies explaining the people whom the books are based off, as well as 2 books detailing the ships of the time to try and understand it all, still having difficulty. I only see dad maybe once a week and I'd love to have someone else to discuss all this stuff with.

It's a fantastic bloody read despite all the difficulties, I often try to go to bed and read a few pages before I fall asleep, but if there's a battle going on it gets my heart racing so much I cannot sleep for the next hour or so. Very good fun being very invested in characters and knowing you have another... 1 - 3 years of reading ahead of you.

Anyone else read?

Haven't read these books, but have read some Hornblower which I really enjoyed. I think I have 4 or 5 books which were my Dads. I prefer the Sharpe series by Bernard Cornwell (also check out his King Arthur trilogy - very good). It's about a British Rifle Officer in the Napoleonic Wars. Currently 21 books and 3 short stories. Currently going through the audiobook versions... I usually listen to them while I work.
