Do you guys and gals like... anime?

Unread postby Toby McCasker » 12 Apr 12, 6:08 pm

Question, GoNners: Are you guys and gals into anime? I noticed that sometimes I'd drop a hell anime bomb in an article, and a fair few of you seemed to express some love for the medium.

If it's not your thing, what do you like to watch?

I like anime. Was watching a bunch of Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood today in fact when for some reason I couldn't bring myself to play any games.

In general but I like watching what is good regardless of the medium.

I'm a bit of a fan of the anime, but its harder for a series to win me over these days. Watching Cowboy Bebop again at the moment. Probably get into Gurren Lagann again after that.

I've wanted to like anime, but every time I watch something it seems like such a great concept ruined by stupidity.. i.e a character gets surprised, so they pull stupid expressions and there are things over their heads etc.. I just can't get into it like that.

There is probably heaps out there.. and I'd give it a go but so far.. no thanks.

I did like some of it back in the day... Akira, Urotsukidoji, Fist of the North Star, Wicked City etc

But since then I haven't really got into it all that much.

Not really.

Friends got me to watch Melancholy of Haruhi Suzemiawhatever, and while it was pretty good I don't see anything amazing about it as a medium. Not really into japanese culture either so maybe that's why.

I've been into anime since the early 90's. Back then I had to import VHS videos from the UK through a comic store as it simply wasn't available in regular shops like it is today.

The very first video I imported was Akira (I had no idea how good it was. I just thought the picture on the cover looked kinda cool so....) and what a choice that was.

Unfortunately the really good anime is few and far between, so my collection has remained pretty small. To me it seems like animation studio's would rather release a really long, dragged-out series of episodes than making a one off movie masterpiece. Is there more money to be made from episodic anime these days?

My old friends tried to make me watch high school of the dead - it was disgusting.

I'm the same, there are only a handful of the more serious anime series i can handle, most of them are just as you said ruined by dumb facial expressions and yelling that make me throw the remote.

Ergo Proxy, Moribito, Hellsing, Samurai X, Basilisk. That's about it so far.

No one has mentioned Neon Genesis? For shame! Akira was probably the first anime I watched and I loved it, but I just can't watch it these days for some reason. Nothing really 'does' it for me. Does Dragon Ball Z count? I LOVE me some DBZ. Watched it all several times :D
