Sanctuary Cancelled

Unread postby Mugsy » 14 Jun 12, 11:49 am

A little late (announcement was on 21st May) but I didn't see a thread on this.

SyFy has cancelled Sanctuary. Doesn't look like the producers will try to get the show up and running via other means as they've all moved on to other projects:

Considering the way season 4 finished, I'm not at all surprised. However, given that they've only done 59 episodes, it would be nice to have a movie length feature as the '60th episode' to tie up remaining questions.

I didn't like it personally, but my experiences with movie length or rushed endings (SGA or Firefly) is that they've been **** :(

There wasn't an SGA movie (was in production, but got cancelled) and I didn't mind Serenity. I actually saw the movie first, thought it was pretty cool and decided to watch the series to which I enjoyed more. If it's compared to the series, yes, the firefly movie wasn't as good but as a movie itself, I thought it was tops.

To each their own, but I really didn't like Serenity :/ Maybe I was still frustrated by the cancellation of the show, and found it a poor substitute, I don't know. I've seen it since, and still don't enjoy it.

As for SGA, what I meant was that the last episode or two to tie it up (they still left a lot of ends) was incredibly rushed, and a mistake IMO.

Yeah, that last episode in particular was one of the most rushed endings ever.

I also watched Serenity first and then the series but I still like Serenity.

Hidden: show
The only thing I didn't like about the movie after watching the series was Wash dieing. Sure it was a pointless death done solely for the sake of having someone die (the Agent from the Avengers suffered the same injustice imo) but after getting to know and love the character with the series that pointless death stung.

Then again I haven't seen either show and movie in ages so maybe my opinion would change if I watched them again.

SGA was just simply rushed, there's nothing else too it. They were told at the 11th hour that there won't be any more SGA so they had to quickly throw something together as some sort of conclusion. Though there's probably something deeper to this as SGA was sacrificed for SGU, possibly from the request of SGA's creators I heard once.

This is kind of why I don't bother with TV shows anymore, why get invested in a story and its characters if everything is just gonna stop halfway through for no good reason? That and there's not generally anything worth watching these days anyway.

I think in part it's also the creators fault for making series with a continuing story from season to season. Maybe if more shows were like Dexter* where each season has its own self contained story this wouldn't be a problem because then a random cancellation won't mean a current storyline won't be left unfinished.

*At least Season 1-3 were. Season 4 ended in a cliffhanger and I never watched anything past that.

The alternative is to give more advance warning of cancellations so that the creators can create a proper conclusion and tie up all the loose ends. My understanding is that cancellation notices are given half way of shooting through a season or something where all the stories are already planned and such.

That was a mistake, I hate SGU.

I get what you mean with shows though, it's like Missing which only started here what, a few months ago? Cancelled already. I just don't think I'll bother starting something untill it's got 3 or 4 seasons under it's belt to avoid disappointment :/

To be honest, I was only ever luke-warm on Sanctuary (was an "investor" in the original webisode run) and didn't bothering watching it when it was picked up by SyFy.

Also, I still think SyFy is a retarded version of SciFi >.<

I was indifferent myself. Watched the first episode and found it uninteresting so didn't continue.

I'm quite the opposite. I didn't watch the webisodes and it wasn't until the second season started airing that I began watching the first. The first few episodes were a bit tedious to sit through but there were some good stuff starting around mid season 1 of Sanctuary.

I can't say that Season 2 was magnificent... the tone changed somewhat in the first half but it was still watchable stuff from the second half onwards. Seasons 3 and 4 fair much better against my tastes.

Finally, should never have been renewed instead of SG:U imo.

I tried to like Sanctuary, as it was a really cool concept, but I just found it was pretty badly written. ABC have had "the final season" as part of their ads for Season 4 for quite some time.

SO this. However SGU had a true ensemble cast which probably cost them a pretty penny. I doubt the costs of Sanctuary was anything near SGU.

I didn't mind The Sanctuary, but they should never have killed off the daughter...

While this is off topic to the OP, the problem with SGU was SciFi changing its name to SyFy and trying to be a different channel to what it was when it started.

In the US, Friday night has always been SciFi night (over all channels) but then SyFy put on WWF (wrestling on a sci-fi channel... seriously?? What a dumb idea) and moved SGU to earlier in the week (Tuesday I think) so not only did it lose a dedicated following of friday night watchers, it then had to compete against reality shows and already established shows on the other networks (none scifi based) for viewers and then the executives wondered why it didn't do any good.

Add to the fact that the first season was pretty boring, way to many character driven stories and while yes they are important at getting people to like the characters, you certainly don't need them one after the other. Season 2 was much better but by then it had already taken a ratings hit, lost a lot of fans and then was getting screwed over by the exec's with what I've mentioned above.

Sadly now with the demise of The Sanctuary, there is bugger all any sci-fi tv on any more... :(

SGU died because it wasn't sure what it wanted to be, nobody wants to watch Dawson's Creek in space and it took them too long for it to get good.

I watched 2 series of Sanctuary (i think) and i don't remember why i stopped, it just wasn't good enough to pick back up I think.

Big fan of blondie though....
