How am i 'totally wrong', how have the main character's stories advanced at all in the book? The only main character's story thats progressed would have been Arya's, the rest is just same old stuff, doin the same old thing. Joff bein a ****, robb not doing anything, nights watch doin stuff beyond the wall (i'm pretty sure its important, but its not really touched upon), daenerys still trying and failing to get to westeros.
let's have a minor recap on the main characters:
Caitlyn: undead bandit queen
Sansa: married to littlefinger, lady of the aerie, on the run from everyone.
Jon: becomes head of the watch, betrayed, stabbed and thrown into a black cell
Robb: beheaded, wolfs head sown on in place of his own
Bran: crippled, betrayed, runs over the wall with the Reed twins, is a warg
Rickon: disappears into the south with Osha, shaggydog is virtually rabid
Jaime: mutilated sword hand, captured to be hung by caitlyn, loves Brienne
Cersei: gets power, loses power, locked up by church for fornication, lil nuts
Tyrion: nose/cheek sawn off, exiled, works in a menagerie, approaching dany
Joff: poisoned (probably this seasons cliffhanger)
Myrcella: engaged to a Dornish prince, abducted, on the run
Theon: imprisoned and broken into a slave, probably going to be the big hero
Hound: bonds broken by wildfire, steals arya, "dies", recovering at a monastery, also a candidate for hero now that freed from his brother
Mountain: killed in a duel, frankenstiened back to life as Cersei's champion
Brienne: on the run, loves Jaime, fealty forces her to lead him into a trap
That's a TINY bit of what happens and doesn't include any of the new characters
Action? I never said anything about it having to be action, i'd like it if the book didnt feel like just filler to the next one. None of the books are filler, none, a significant amount of plot and character development happens in every book
Subtlty and nuances? Theres none of those in the second book, not like the first book. There are, if you havent read further you might not recognize them though.
Renly was a waste of a character. In the first book its like he didnt exist, and then the second he had a chapter or 2 then he's dead. I'm not sure why we're meant to care about him. Because he greatly affected the lords alliances in the kingdoms, he lessened Stannis' claim and he provided a rallying point for Highgarden in the south, providing them with "one of their own" to rally behind (and that's the most fertile part of the kingdoms), his marriage/death also set up the Tyrell run at the throne.
Kings landing beat back stannis? Ok, now you're still back to how it was before, some people're dead, nothings changed. The entire power base of the city changes, multiple times, stannis takes over the wall in the north
I'm not trying to compare book to tv, as they're both good on their own merits, but it just could have been so much more interesting if the plot went anywhere.
The plot goes EVERYWHERE, you're just doing the equivalent of reading one page of a stand alone novel and complaining that nothing happened.
