Launch 360, just RRoD'd

Unread postby Toasty Fresh » 29 Jan 12, 5:21 pm

Well today I went to play some Gears 3 and my 360 finally bricked itself (again). It's a launch model, so it's out of warranty. My options are to spend a day tearing my hair out and fix it myself (which I don't really want to do) or pay a hundred bucks and send it in. Considering that the next Xbox will come out in a year or two I'm not really sure that that is the best idea as it'll just RROD a third time and I'll have to pay again. I would toss the stupid thing and get a 360 Slim (as they apparently don't have the problem and the HDMI would be nice), but I don't have 400 dollars lying around to spend on whatever.

So my real question is if they will just repair my launch 360 and send it back, or if they'll replace it with a slim (I've heard a few people say they sent in old 360s and had them replaced with shiny new ones). I really don't want to pay 100 dollars just for it to cark it again, and I don't want to throw it away as I just got Gears 3 last week and I really want to play it :?

I don't know if anybody can really give a definitive answer but I'm stumped as to what is the best solution and I'm pretty much posting this anywhere I think I would get an educated guess at best.

Thanks guys!

Microsoft will replace it with whatever they want at their discretion. It's impossible to know which. But you what you can count on is if its going to cost them too much to fix it, they'll just replace it, otherwise they will repair it.

Also there is no guarantee that your replacement will die again before the new XBOX is released. I have a launch model that hasn't ever RROD. you might spend the $100 and it will last long enough.

Another option is to find a local repairer who might do it cheaper than $100, but you'll be in the same boat of not knowing if it'll die again.

There is also the option of pre-owned. Its got a 1yr warranty (so you'll get at least a year out of it) and its the elite model, so its also RROD 'resistant' and has HDMI, and its only $189 - https://www.ebgames.com.au/xbox360-1400 ... B-Xbox-360

Personally I would pay for the pre-owned elite. For me it's too close to the new XBOX to shell out too much.

I'm definitely thinking of going for a new console but a pre-owned elite could still RRoD and it's not much cheaper than a 4gb Slim arcade.

4GB is not really that much capacity in my opinion, especially if you're adding any DLC or play games from your HDD (for quicker loading times). Plus some game patches (like BF3) and some GOTY editions require a considerable amount of HDD space. You can stick most USB thumb drives in the console, but 16GB is the maximum space allowed.

Consider the options (preowned vs new, price vs storage, HDMI vs non-HDMI, etc), decide what features on the 360 console that you don't really need and buy accordingly.
