Reducing Harddrive

Hi There.

I'm in the middle as we speak of a little project i've wanted to do for ages.
I have a
PS3 with 40gb HDD
Xbox 360 with 120gb HDD
I am in the middle of swapping the drives over (as i type, the PS3 is backing up the data to an external USB so i can restore it onto the 120gb once installed, no backup of the 120gb is to take place)
The xbox 120gb HDD is remove and sitting on the desk.

I didn't care about keeping my gamertag, installed games or the like, i was hoping to simply put the 40gb into the Xbox, format, and go.

While waiting for hardrives to format and backup i decided to do some reading and discovered that .. shock and horror, while the PS3 allows this sort of thing to easily take place, right down to been written up in the manual, the Xbox is not so friendly, infact they seem to have special codes written to the HDD cmos/bios/whatever and if it doesn't have that code, you'll get some "incompatible hardware" issue.
OK, so we all know this is BS, and i have read about how you get overcome this with a dos tool and a particular harddrive make and model, but it is never mentioned if this is the case if you do NOT wish to save your old info, in this case, i'm happy for the Xbox to start again from scratch, still login with my old gamertag or make a new one if i choose etc.

The Xbox other than today, has never been opened, hacked, or cracked and never intends to be, i simply wanted to lower the size of the harddrive with a swap.

Am i going about this the right way? Will this be possible .. i don't yet know the make and model of the PS3 HDD till it completes (its rather slow) backup.

Unfortunately, You will not be able to use the 40gb HDD with the Xbox 360. You are limited to Hard drives offered by Microsoft.

You can also use USB flash drives or external HDD's as a suitable replacement for the regular mounted/built in drive.

Suggestions of modifications will be removed from this thread.

OK, so your saying .. that the 40gb drive may not mount internally and work, but if i mount it into an external USB enclosure, then i might be able to use it?

which would be fine for save games, just dont expect good load times for games installed on the hard drive (or downloaded of xbox live)

You'll also be stuck with a 8GB or 16GB limit. Microsoft imposes this on all third party USB storage media either because a) they want you to buy their overpriced garbage, or b) the XTAF container that 360 content is stored is a pain in the butt.
