PSN download speeds really really slow

Hey has anyone else got an issue with incredibly slow download speeds? This includes game updates, movies, demos, whatever....

My PS3 is one of the older models and it's hooked up wirelessly. Can't say I've really noticed slow download speeds until recently but can't be sure. Is this a generally acceptable situation or is there something that can be done to improve things?

always used an ethernet cable for mine and always goes pretty quick... although i have a great connection. Don't know much about wireless , there was a decent update to psn not long ago wasnt there? prob just setup your connection again , reset everything , see how u go...

ive got mine hooked up via cable both my 60gig and my slimmer 320gig i just randomly went and checked my 60gig and the download speeds are fine. i then hooked it up to wireless and checked it just for u and a lil drop in DL speed which u expect but its fine...

it could be a possibility that its having trouble talking to your modem perhaps?

I really know nothing about this but does that mean I have to set the a static IP for the PS3? I tried to do this via the custom PS3 settings, however the PS3 wouldn't connect to the internet. I used this help page as a guide but it failed the connection test:

Awesome router - I have one of those too, rock solid for me. I would suggest you just put the IP of your playstation in the DMZ. In the configuration menus for the router go Advanced->Configuration->Virtual Server->DMZ and plug the IP address into the "Internal IP address" box and apply the changes.

You can test your internet connection from the playstation by going into Settings > Network Settings > Internet Connection Test

You are looking for everything to test ok and, ideally, get a NAT type 1 connection but type 2 should be ok.

You don't need a static IP to connect to the internet but if you are going to do what I have suggested above it would make it a lot easier. You can either set a static IP on the PS3 or just grab the MAC address of the PS3 and set up a static reservation on your router (Advanced->configuration->LAN->DHCP Server then look for the "fixed host" link on the page next to the apply button and fill in the boxes). Setting up a static IP on the PS3 does work, you just have to get all the bits right, the default router and DNS servers can just point at your router address - you can always cheat and look at the settings DHCP gave you but you will want to change the IP to something outside the DHCP range otherwise something else will get the same address and then your network will really be bad, you can find those by looking on the DHCP server page at the range start and range end boxes. Just change the last number in the set of four to something below the start range one.

I actually got it to work with what I was doing above because I stupidy entered my IP adress incorrectly (it said NAT 2 by the way), however it failed both download and upload tests...

Anyway, with what you're saying Blymn if I do the DMZ thing (and use a static address for my PS3) I don't need to bother with port forwarding????

Yeah like I said I initially messed up my modem's IP address when I initially entered it, however the only thing it failed when I did enter the right stuff was the download and upload tests, which I guess is bad. I tried to download a demo and it stayed on 0% for 5 mins so I just shut it all down. I've done something wrong so like you suggested I'll try the DMZ thing

Yes, the DMZ mode should just automatically port forward everything to the PS3.

What do you mean properly? You need an IP address for your ps3, netmask should just be 255.255.255.0, default router will be your router, DNS you can point at your router. Like I said, have a look at what DHCP set and use that as a basis.

Yes have followed your instructions re: setting up static ip, it has connected, but is still failing the download and upload tests when it tests the connection. Does this matter? How do I know it's worked?

It shouldn't be failing the tests, there's definitely a problem.

Personally, I found wireless performance with the PS3 to be subpar (I wish that had added 802.11n when they did the Slim redesign). I ended up running a cable and it is orders of magnitude better. I still wouldn't say I get fantastic speeds for PSN downloads, but I suspect that's a problem at Sony's end, given that time of day/week gives different results.
