Insta crash, flashing red light...

Unread postby That_Stevens_Guy » 6 Jul 10, 9:24 pm

My PS3 is a 60GB launch console. It will be 3 years old July 19th.

2 weeks ago, I was playing GTA: EFLC, and my PS3 made a weirdass beeping like it yelped in pain. For no particular reason. Nothing happened and the game kept playing.

Today I was playing the same game, and my PS3 insta crashed, with a flashing red light. I tapped the power. Let it cool down. Then rebooted it. It came up, telling me my PS3 didn't turn off properly. NO SH!T.

Just a heads up that this can happen, will post back if it happens again. Anyone else had this happen to them? I am hoping my PS3 isn't on its way out, it's served me well.

It's been a while since I've had a crash so I can't remember whether it was instant or whatever. From memory, the 2 or 3 crashes I've had were probably due to overheating and the PS3 rebooted itself down with the 3 beeps that you mentioned. I never had to intervene. My bro has had Uncharted 2 hang on him though... darn loading screens!

We thought it might be the network so we have taken it offline for a bit.

EDIT: edited so it makes more sense...

Just crashed again. Three beeps, crashes, then flashing red light. Last resort will be to put the old hdd back in it.

Yeah there is so many theories going atm, I don't get how it can overheat, its the middle winter! It could be the old heat sensor error, but that usually causes the YLOD, and I haven't seen it flash up. So I am keeping a closer eye on it now.

well the fact that it will run again after being left for a while makes me think heat related.

can you hear the fans running/feel the air get pumped out of the back of the ps3?

any other fautls (power supply, hardware, etc) would probably cause the thing to die and not start again.

id be on the blower to sony quick smart and not using it in the mean time (in case i make it worse).

just because its not under warranty doesnt mean they wont help you over the phone.

I have run some tests, first thing was to unplug the ethernet, this seems to have worked, hasn't crashed again tonight, when I tried to plug it back in, it crashed my router! So I have swapped ethernet cables with a better one. This seems to run fine.

I played GTA for an hour, no crashes. So its nice and hot, and now I have it folding@home, as more of a heat test. And its holding up fine...

I also turned it off, vacuumed the death out of it, and re-seated the HDD.

And personally I am one of these people that would rather a new one, over a expensive replacement or repair. Same thing happened to my dad with his watch today, was told it would cost him $369 to fix (by Citizen), he only paid $500 for it!

But anyway, I have many theories, I am just narrowing them down as I go. It could be a bit like a 'cold start' thing, its been abnormally cold recently, and starting it up from cold might stress it. Cause its been fine all night now. Folding away like a dream, GTA ran fine too.

It's started YLOD'ing. But its more of a Light Green Light of Death. Its not yellowy like I have seen on youtube.

I have managed to boot it into a kinda safe mode, (resets the gpu etc), and its backing up my data and I got my game out of it.

Going to try putting my old HDD back in it, and see how I go, if not... time to go shopping :( I just bought the new TV for it and everything!

EDIT: It actually started working again and I managed to back up my data, old hdd is back in it now.

It's dead, so there you go, a story about the death of a PS3.

Wonder if GAME or EB will take a trade of my broken PS3... I know they'll trade broken 360's, my cousin did it anyway. Anything is better than nothing. I do have a game voucher I have been meaning to use.

yes eb should trade it. however some stores wont trade 60gb consoles at all (even if broken) but most will. a broken console doesnt need to be traded with its controller. so you also score yourself another controller (softens the blow maybe?).

and eb stores shouldnt be trading broken 360s. your cousin was lucky.

I had a voucher for GAME, and they gave me a decent amount for trading MW2 and Bioshock 2, I figured trading two recent games that I found mediocre, that are popular, would get good value. That plus GAME's $449 PS3 120gb price... worked out $280.

Actually buying the PS3 would have put me onto another voucher too, so that is no loss. Decided to keep my old PS3, being a 60GB launch console... Might box it up, I am curious to try 'fixing it' anyway, the geek in me is saying DO IT!

EDIT: I dunno how my cousin managed to trade his broken 360, but he did, maybe it worked temporarily or something. This was 2-3 years ago now. Back around the time Halo 3 came out.
