Xbox 360 + Dell U2711

Unread postby Defacto Atheist » 19 Jul 11, 10:53 pm

Now I realise that this may be drawing dangerously close to irrelevance within this area of the forum, but I'd like to give it a shot anyway. And pardon me if I have, indeed, posted in the wrong place.

Now, I'm considering buying a Dell U2711 monitor, very pretty thing etc etc. And I currently own an Xbox360 (one of the new, slim models). Now my question is not, whether it will be compatible, I am quite sure it will be. Rather, I'm curious as to what effect the 2560 x 1440 resolution of the U2711 will have on the 360, which, as far as I'm aware, tops out at 1080i or 1080p or something along those lines.

Does anyone have experience with hooking up extra large (2560 x 1***) monitors to a 360? What results should I expect?

Cheers.

And apologies again if this is in the wrong place.

My guess is that it'd look like ****. Depending on the monitor, it might stretch it, not display at all, or centre it. Much like when you run a resolution smaller resolution on your screen normally.

My current monitor runs at 2048 x 1152,which isn't a bug different from 1920 by 1080 but I still have a general idea on what you will be dealing with. You have with my dell at least the option to stretch the display or center it. If you center it it just take up the amount of pixels it needs for 1080p and leaves the rest blank. This is alright for me as it only ends up being maybe a center meter thick at most all around. But it'd be a pretty damn noticeable on that monitor considering how much bigger the resolution is. The stretch option is noticeable, your picture on even my screen looks grainier due to the pixels being stretched to fill out the extra space.

I'd suggest avoiding a monitor like that for use with an console. Get something else unless you really are set on have the bigger resolution for your pc. That is of course assuming you have the GPU power to actually play at that resolution.
