Having trouble connecting my PS3

Unread postby *BudgeAmon* » 5 Dec 10, 3:42 pm

Hi,
I got my new ps3, when i connected to to my modem and started it up i couldn't update, it kept saying error and some numbers, i googled it and some forums were saying you had to disable media streaming/media servers, which i did and nothing. It also said about opening ports on routers. I have no idea how to do that, besides i have my PS3 directly into the modem which is a Telstra bigpond one. I ended up putting in GT5 and it updated off that. Sweet i thought. Now i went to make a account and the connection times out, so i made on via my pc and tried to login with that account and same timing out thing. Any help would be appreciated, thanks :)

i think i had trouble connecting mine at first , i also have a bigpond modem..cant remember the problem i had ...

few things you could try , dunno if they'll work though mate ,

try turning off both ps3 and modem for a min then turn modem on, let it find the connection before turning on ps3, my ps3 still doesnt login sometimes and i have to reset my modem for it to login...

also try going into modem settings and turning upnp on...
i dont know much about tech stuff but something you could try at least.

hope you sort it out :)

type this ip into your address bar in browser : 10.0.0.138

should bring up the thompson page with all the settings for the modem , goto configure , i dunno if it would be that thats causing the problem though.

on your ps3, if you go to the network settings, there should be an option that gives you the current configuration... will look like a largish list with a lot of numbers...

whats the ip address and the dns address?

Did you set up the PS3 settings manually?

Also have you tried the connection test?

that would make me think they they are being assigned the same ip address.

if you do want to try and fix it, try manually assign the ip address.

I did try that, i came across something that said do that but just up the last number in the ip by one so it's different, i had to set the dns number before i could save it so i just put the 10.0.0.138 number in there and it wouldn't connect. Should i just put the changed ip in there too?

something like

ps3
ip address 10.0.0.16 (or anything below .254 other than .138
subnet mask 255.0.0.0
dns 10.0.0.138 (or whatever the address of your modem is)

pc
ip address 10.0.0.17 (or anything below .254 other than .138 or whatever you made the ps3)
subnet mask 255.0.0.0
dns 10.0.0.138 (or whatever the address of your modem is)

although if your modem is stupid (being a bigpond modem this may be likely), setting the dns server to the modem may not actually work, in which case you would have the get the ip address of the dns server from bigpond (you may be able to extract it from your modems configuration page though), and set it to that.

edit:
as mentioned in the other thread, you should also set the default gateway on both devices to the address of your modem (10.0.0.138).

really though, you should be able to hit the auto assign option and your modem should be configured to work it out... id be contacting telstra to get them to help you configure the modem properly.

that way you could add devices (laptops, xbox 360, new computer, etc) later and have it just work easily.

I had a similar problem then found out that it was trying to connect to my wireless router but I hadn't given it the pass code. Works like a dream now. I wonder if you can do website hosting through the PS3?
