Is this cheating?

Unread postby chodeofwar » 28 Jul 12, 4:58 pm

So i run nvidia surround and i can see through the walls at some points if i stand next to the wall. Can i be banned for this? Is this against the rules on games.on.net servers? I'm assuming Valve know about the issue, but despite the "tactical advantage" it sometimes provides I really wish they would fix this :

OK - so it looks like a bug _but_ if you do try using the bug and someone demos you then you will look like someone who is using wallhacks. When it comes to the admins reviewing the demo if they see certain behaviours that a wallhacker does then they will come to the conclusion "wallhacks" and will perma ban you. Admins are quite used to getting the protestation "I didn't, I never haxed", so trying to explain away what you were doing as exploiting a bug won't get you very far. Even if they did believe you then you still are in hot water due to the exploiting of map flaws rule.

Best to stay away from the places where this happens and just play the game straight and fair - anything else will end in tears.

Its almost impossible not to do this by accident tho, every wall i stand next to i can see through a lot of the time it actually gets me killed because i get distracted by it.

And as if im going to not use my hardware to its full potential. I wouldn't mind if Valve made 1920x1080 the max rez but im the mean time im going to keep using 6060x1080.

VAC doesn't take screenshots like punkbuster so you won't get caught by VAC, it's how people have gotten by using material hacks since day 1.
However if you're caught on demo you will get caught, that is as soon as people 'clue up' about the glitch/bug and know why you're always hugging walls.

I think someone would have to demo at your resolution to be 'caught', since its caused by your large resolution (It happens to me as well when I use all 3 screens to game)

But how will they know unless they can view the game at the same resolution and/or are doing the same thing he is?

Usually if you have to ask if it's cheating, it usually is.

Usually people who review demo's know the various things cheaters/'hackers' do, this would be an addition to that.
Just depends on if you're lucky enough to get caught and have someone with a brain review the demo, I'm pretty sure that people would know about this already if the same thing happens with eyefinity (I don't see why it wouldn't).

Is it cheating, yes.
Is it going to get you VAC banned? no.
Is there a chance you're going to be banned from servers if people are clued up enough? yes.

Fair enough, I don't play CS, so I don't know that much about it, but I have played other FPS, and hiding in a corner is kind of something you tend to do.

i can completely understand where chody is coming from.
i also suffer from this blessing and i say use it to its full potential. lets be honest no one really cares about the whinging noobs and their below average computers so run with it.

chody i say use your NVIDIA set up the way it was meant to be used, its not our fault the "normal" joe blow's dont have the capability to keep up with the times.

lets look at it this way, most "normal" people would be envious to see a successful person drive past them in a Ferrari while they plod along in their getz, but do they try and make it illegal for these people to have nice things because they are faster, nicer better and more expensive....NO.

some people have better things people deal with it or do what chody has done and get it youself.

dont kid yourselves guys, if you could do it you would............IT IS NOT CHEATING

if you are demod reacting to players you should not be able to see you will be perm banned for walling, bug or not

i would suggest not running in this display mode until they make a fix

Short answer, no.

chodeofwar wrote:Is this against the rules on games.on.net servers?

Yes it will fall under the following:

The Rules wrote:Exploits - Skywalking, map exploits, buying restricted weapons or any other command/setting that causes an abnormal effect in the server are all bannable offences.

But to state the obvious we have no way to see what you see on your screen. If you feel the need to use this exploit then we cannot stop you but imo I don't see the need to use cheats/exploits to win over others.

What you need to keep in mind though is that if you are blatantly tracing or lining up players through walls with no prior LOS or they are walking expect to be looked at. Do this multiple times over multiple rounds expect to be permanently banned for cheating.

I wont even bother entering into a discussion if you get banned for using this. I have no way of knowing if you are using a 3rd party program or a graphics exploit but to be blunt I don't care.

Use at your own risk.
