The new releases just keep on coming, but that's the sort of behaviour you expect for this time of year. This week sees the long-awaited but sadly censored release of Left 4 Dead 2, which will hit Steam on Tuesday afternoon and retail shelves on Thursday. Also premiering on Thursday is not one but three new Assassin's Creed titles. Finally, Goku and friends will be slugging it out yet again in Dragon Ball: Raging Blast, which I believe may be the 25th fighting game based on the popular manga and anime series, if my Dragon Ball knowledge is up to date.

Even though there are more than 20 games due for release this week, most eyes are going to be fixated on the two showstoppers – Modern Warfare 2 and New Super Mario Bros. Wii. In the unlikely event that these two guaranteed Game of the Year candidates don't appeal to you, there are other good games on the way, such as Invisimals, Jak & Daxter: The Lost Frontier and A Boy and His Blob.

We're at the end of October, but the Q4 release season still has plenty to offer. This week's big release is Grand Theft Auto IV: The Ballad of Gay Tony, which will be available alone on the Xbox Live Marketplace, or together with The Lost and Damned add-on in disc form. Also of note this week is the PC release of Borderlands, the life consuming Football Manager 2010, DJ Hero and a couple of Dragon Ball games.

It seems as though this week's schedule is a little subdued compared to others so far this release season. All eyes will likely be fixed on Borderlands and Forza Motorsport 3, which both hit on Friday, but if you've got a bit of spare time and a DS handy, check out Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story and Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days. Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising is also due out this week, though retail spies tell me that it may have already snuck out.

This is going to be an expensive week. Uncharted 2, Metroid Prime Trilogy and Brutal Legend – three games that demand your attention, all releasing on the one day. There's a little reprieve as Atari has informed us to not expect Operation Flashpoint 2 until the 22nd, but you can always use that money on a copy of Fallout 3: Game of the Year Edition or Wii Fit Plus.

We're into the big release season now, but the industry seems to have decided to skip this week. That is unless you like basketball or enhanced ports, in which case you'll probably want to check out NBA 2K10 and Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2. If you're of a more creative mind, take a look at EA's two Spore Hero spinoffs and Drawn to Life: The Next Chapter, which are both hitting the Wii and DS.

October is almost upon us – time flies when you're having fun. Many big things are on the way this month, but we get off to kind of a slow start. Leading off the week is the crazy DS puzzler Scribblenauts. Following that is FIFA 10, which is bound to be one of the best sports games of the year. Also hitting store shelves this week is Gran Turismo for the PSP, which launches alongside the new PSP Go.

This week’s Coming Attractions is brought to you by broken street dates and clearance sales. Many of the games marked for release tomorrow, like Colin McCrae DiRT 2, Need for Speed SHIFT and NHL 10 should already be available in stores now, unless your local game shill is one of those ones that plays by the book. There is also a few neat console ports hitting the PC this week, namely destructor-sim Red Faction Guerilla and Resident Evil 5.

From next week on, we’ll be bringing Coming Attractions to you on Mondays, mostly in an effort to avoid street date breaches messing up our hard work. Don’t forget that you can check out our full release schedule for any updates and changes.

All fancy calendar tricks aside, 09/09/09 is significant for a number of reasons, two of which we’ll mention here. First off, it’s the Dreamcast’s 10th anniversary in the United States, and secondly, it’s launch day for The Beatles: Rock Band, the most heavily hyped music game release to date. Non-Beatles fans don’t have too much to look forward to this week – Champions Online will be available in local retailers at last, and AFL and Rugby League Challenge will be tearing it up on the PSP.

This week marks the start of the holiday video game release season. It’s a time when reviewers are drip-fed Red Bull and have their eyes pried open ala Clockwork Orange to bring you the skinny on the latest and greatest games, where wallet pillaging and credit card abuse are par for the course, and when time spent with loved ones is a rare commodity. Surely they will understand that Batman, Cloud and Mitsurugi need love too.

On the digital distribution front, we have the remake of arcade classic Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Turtles in Time coming out tonight, while on the retail side, Ashes Cricket 2009 marks the sport’s debut on the PlayStation 3, while From Software’s latest over the top action endeavour Ninja Blade will land on store shelves on Friday.
