October is almost upon us – time flies when you're having fun. Many big things are on the way this month, but we get off to kind of a slow start. Leading off the week is the crazy DS puzzler Scribblenauts. Following that is FIFA 10, which is bound to be one of the best sports games of the year. Also hitting store shelves this week is Gran Turismo for the PSP, which launches alongside the new PSP Go.
Don't forget to check out our full release schedule for all of the latest changes and updates on your most wanted games.

Each week, we collate the most popular stories that we published over the past seven days, plus a lineup of the most downloaded files added in the same timeframe. That way, in case you missed something, you can catch up in one helpful little spot, every Monday morning.
Last week, everybody wanted to take a first glimpse at the first officially released gameplay footage from Call of Duty 2: Modern Warfare. Other news that was popular included an explanation about EVE Online from the developers, what was to be contained within the Assassin's Creed II collector's edition.
Finally, lots of people wanted to hear all about the fact that Star Wars: The Force Unleashed would be making its way to both the PC and Mac.

The video game industry has come far in the last thirty years, but we still can’t shake the perception that everything needs to be released in the fourth quarter of the year. It has gotten better, particularly in the last two years where heavy hitters like Grand Theft Auto IV, Resident Evil 5 and Super Smash Bros. Brawl were released in the first half of the year. Q4 2009 is still stacked with high profile titles, some of which will inevitably be overlooked in favour of Halo 3: ODST, Modern Warfare 2 and Assassin’s Creed 2.
This week, The Warp Pipe is going to shed a bit of light on titles which are deserving of your attention this year, but are at risk of being lost in the Q4 shuffle.

After a couple of months of collecting older video games, my partner and I finally found copies of what’s effectively known as the “holy trinity” of Super Nintendo RPGs – Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy VI and Super Mario RPG: Legend of the 7 Stars – in excellent condition. She’s delighted, being a fan of Japanese RPGs since the dawn of gaming, but I’ve got this feeling of emptiness. That got me thinking about things in a gaming context – how often do you feel that the quest is the more rewarding part of the experience, and that the ending is a bit of a letdown?
This week, The Warp Pipe is going to serve up another round of quick thoughts and observations loosely associated with video gaming.

At E3, French publisher Ubisoft announced that they'd be bringing an all new brawler to the Nintendo Wii, set to feature everyone's favourite creatures, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Today, Ubisoft have sent word that we can expect to see more than just turtles in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Smash Up, which is currently in development by the same folk who worked on Super Smash Bros.
In Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Smash Up players will also be able to play as Casey Jones, Ulrominator (Krang) and the nondescript Foot Soldier, who should really be capable of kicking things.
To prove to us that the characters are actually in the game and that Ubisoft aren't telling fibs, they've sent us some flashy concept art and screenshots to prove that they're being honest with us.

I spent the weekend watching cartoons and bitterly reminiscing on the glory days of Saturday-morning TV, before I became somehow detached from children's popular culture involving anorexic dolls with bee stung lips. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, now that was a cartoon, and I am gleefully awaiting the arrival of TMNT: Smash Up on Wii. Apparently it's a brawler a là Smash Brothers, but four palette swapped turtles do not an ensemble cast make. This new trailer introduces a few familiar faces, both friend and foe, who will star along side our reptilian (amphibian? chelonian?) friends.

Apparently, there's something that Miyamoto has wanted to do for the past 20 years that he has been working on Mario titles, and that is to re-create the single-player gameplay with multiplayer.
...and now, he's done just that, with New Super Mario Bros. Wii, which lets up to four players join in the action co-operatively and competitively, on the Wii. As if the news wasn't already pretty thrilling, and the new screens and first-look trailer kinda awesome-looking, Nintendo are working their fingers to the bone on this one, and it will be on shelf (at least in the US) by Christmas this year.

In sales terms, 2008 was very much the year of Nintendo, as evidenced by recent figures released by the company. As a part of their latest financial briefing, Nintendo have revealed a list of both Wii and DS titles that have sold over one million copies since launch. The top seller worldwide? Wii Sports, with 40.5 million units sold since launch, making it the best selling console game in history. Other titles which sold like hot cakes on the Wii console include Wii Play and Wii Fit.
Top sellers on the DS were a little more modest, with 21.67 million bones were thrown to Nintendogs worldwide. New Super Mario Bros. and Brain Age: Train Your Brain in Minutes a Day (known locally as Prof. Kawashima's Brain Training: How Old Is Your Brain?) rounded up the top three sellers on the hand-held, with 17.63 and 16.82 million sales respectively.
In total, since the launch of the Nintendo Wii and DS, twenty-six titles have sold more than a million copies - which ones are they? Read on to find out!

What will you remember 2008 for, in terms of gaming?
We asked some of the game admins and network staff to find out their thoughts, but here's a quick recap of the past 12 months, to refresh your memory.
Non-games dominated this year's charts, with Wii Fit rewarding gamers for standing still. As a country, we were still fans of the music game genre too, finally getting our hands on Rock Band, which seemed to have been pushed onto shelves by the release of Guitar Hero: World Tour a week later. Who knows, the full-band version may even have healed some hurt caused by the "interesting" yet awkward Guitar Hero: On Tour release for DS. There was a new Call of Duty to heed, a new Bond to meet, Marcus and Dom were back, and independent developers twisted our brains with Braid and our rhythm skills with Audiosurf. Red Alert was back, and we revisited the Midnight Club. We also saw the release of the "Three Fs" - Far Cry 2, Fable 2, and Fallout 3, meaning many gamers were a bit strapped for cash by the end of the year.
...and, who could forget? 2008 is the year we met Sackboy!

As we watch 2008 log off and 2009 jump into gear, we are looking back at some of our highlights for all the fantastic games released this year. It wasn't easy and with so many big titles and great games coming out there was much debate in the Newsbot den as to what game should take out the Games on Net 2008 Awards.
What will be labelled the top games in the consoles? Which was our favourite PC hit? What other awards do we have to give out? All will be explained inside as we round up the year by letting you guys know what we did and didn't like.

2008 has been a little different from the standard industry year, in that we’ve seen a lot of major titles released outside of the holiday shopping season. Mario Kart Wii, Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Grand Theft Auto IV and Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots were all released in the first half of the year. One would think that that might make for a less than stellar holiday line up, but the game publishers of the world (bar Nintendo) are inclined to prove otherwise.
Over the next two weeks (due to the sheer number of releases), The Warp Pipe will be boldly predicting the quality of new games in the next quarter.

If you feel like there's something you've been missing, perhaps it's the ABC's gaming show Good Game! It made its return to our screens this week, for the continuation of its 4th season in the leadup to this year's holiday rush.
Forgot about the first episode? It's okay, the show's on again late tonight, so you can catch up before the regular screening on Monday night at 9pm (...or else you could visit the website where the episode is available to stream or download!).

In all the recent fuss, the poor video game charts were on a piece of paper that got lost on my desk! I've found them today though, so I can tell you all about who was topping the game sales in Australia for the week ending 20th July. Perhaps more eloquently, I can tell you who was not topping the game sales - the Xbox 360, which does not appear in the overall top 10 at all, which instead features four Wii titles, three DS, two PS3 and a lonely PS2 game snuck in there, too. Interesting.
Again, the majority of Australian gamers were out in force, snapping up copies of a smashing Wii brawler. The PC fans are heeding the call of a modern war, Xbox 360 and PS3 are hanging out in Liberty City (...more on Sony's side though, it seems), the PS2 is eating bamboo with its new fighting friend, DS owners are still testing their mental capacities, and the PSP has run into a robotic secret agent!

So the 2008 E3 Media and Business Summit has wrapped up. Bitter fanboys are sure to have run out of tears, at least temporarily, while tired journalists are no doubt catching up on some much needed sleep. I have no doubt that many of you have long lists of games you're now salivating over even more than before – better start putting those pennies aside. On the other hand, those of us on the reviewing side of things are currently wondering how on Earth we're going to manage to cover all of the fourth quarter's games without going insane.
This week, we'll reflect on the events that transpired during the three manufacturer press conferences and discuss our thoughts and any potential ramifications, and we'll also look at a few of the best games that were on show.

Ah, back to reality with the solid tradition of the charts post. After spending a week concentrating on games that are yet to arrive on these shores, it's refreshing to note that people are still buying - and enjoying - games that were announced at last year's E3 - or even before!
This week, everybody is playing one of the highlights of last year's summit, with the Wii taking a brawling top spot. The PC is off buying more simulated flat pack furniture, Xbox 360 and PS3 are still lounging in Liberty City and the PS2 is having a party with lots of singing. While the DS has revisted Professor Kawashima, the PSP remains trapped in a final, fantastic, crisis!

No prizes for guessing what the biggest-selling title was in Australia last week - we've been waiting long enough for this one, I'm not surprised everybody seems to have rushed out and bought it on launch day!
The rest of the charts have been shuffled a bit, too (except for the PSP, which is solidly dependent, week in week out).
Obviously, the Wii has smashed the opposition this week with a brawling masterpiece. The PC gamers among us have bought a lot of flat-pack simulated furniture, Xbox 360 is keeping some bad company, while the PS3 still hangs out with some Patriots. The PS2 is still an archaeologist exploring plastic bricks, and it's the DS's turn to rock out heroically, but the PSP is still stuck in a final, fantastic, crisis.

This weekend marks the midway point of 2008, a milestone which has either come very slowly or out of nowhere, depending on your perception of time and space. I find myself in the latter group, stuck in a state of mind where it's March or April, largely out of desperation for some warm weather. Most of my recent time has been spent wrestling a Metal Gear Solid 4 review, which you'll see on the site soon, and the new Alone in the Dark game, which has some promising concepts destroyed by wretched controls and a multitude of glitches.
With the midway point reached, I thought I'd take the time this week to look back at the major events and releases of the first six months of the year.

Yes, I can confirm that is a pig, flying past your window - Nintendo Australia have just announced that their (very) highly-anticipated title Super Smash Bros. Brawl will be arriving on Australian shores on June 26th, just over a month away.
Not long to wait now before you'll be able to join the rest of the world in this action-packed fighting game, that boasts more moves, more levels, online play, Wi-Fi, multiple control options, more characters and a bonus single-player campaign that is a whole game by itself.

So we return to regular Warp Pipe programming. It hasn't been that long since I did a regular column, but it feels like ages - the GTA articles (one, two, three) turned out to be a little more work than I thought they'd be, but I'm happy with the result. I took a little time off writing over the last week, tucking into Viking: Battle for Asgard and a few awful EA Sports games to push my Xbox 360 gamerscore past the 50,000 mark. Passing that mark seems to have killed my enthusiasm for the system at this point. Of course, I've also spent a bunch of time with Grand Theft Auto IV; it's a good game, possibly even great, but I've yet to see the things that are encouraging other reviewers to give it perfect scores, so I seem to be expecting it to pick up at some point.
As promised, this week we'll have a bit of a grumbly rant about what I don't like about Nintendo, we'll uncover the hidden gem that is The Red Star, and revisit the destructive fun of The Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction.

Super Smash Bros. Brawl. It's one of the biggest games to hit the Wii - even if we haven't seen it Down Under yet. Launched in Japan in late January, the US got their copies in early March, and the game sold more than 4.85 million copies by the beginning of April.
From all accounts, it's one of those almost flawless games, but it's packed to overflowing with content. Who else to tackle the beast than Matt_K, who stepped up to the plate, picked his favourite Nintendo character, and slogged it out, writing us a review in the process. I know it's not the same as getting the game, but it'll whet your appetite just that bit more!

I had my first experience with a Wii console on the weekend at a friends place. While it was only Guitar Hero, (and an incredibly large amount of me failing), I was astonished to discover that the Wii-mote required AA batteries. After a while, the Guitar Hero controller was wrestled from my grip in order for a quick round of retro Gamecube goodness - though something disturbed me. Something didn't fit in.
The controllers were all the wrong colour when compared to the Wii. If that bothers you too... fear not, you won't have to put up with non colour-coordinated Wii and Gamecube controllers for much longer, with Nintendo set to release a pristine white Gamecube controller in Japan sometime this month.

The horrendous Melbourne weather did its best to prevent The Warp Pipe happening this week by knocking the power out multiple times and damn near sending a tree through my car's windshield. I've spent much of my week playing the despicable Two Worlds for the Xbox 360; it's the first console game I've played to date where I have had to enter in commands into an in-game console in order to turn off special effects like dynamic lighting and shadows in order to get the game to run at a playable speed. Maybe Microsoft should give the 360 a new slogan along the lines of "bringing the worst parts of PC gaming into your living room".
This week, we're going to run through the second quarter release schedule and make judgment calls on which ones are going to be worth your time. We'll also give our impressions of Contra 4, a game which mysteriously remains unreleased in Australia. Finally, we'll revisit the SiN anime movie.

Easter has passed us by, and I'm sure many of you had a good time gorging yourselves on chocolate. The Warp Pipe spent its holiday nestled up to a copy of Super Smash Bros. Brawl, with a few hours dedicated to attaining that all important 100% in Bully: Scholarship Edition. It has been a busy week for gaming here, actually; I think I managed about 3,000 new achievement points since the return of my 360 (which pushed me into the top 100 Australians on MyGamerCard), I pushed my way through the majority of Smash Bros' single player modes and I've been reading Steven Kent's The Ultimate History of Video Games, which I'll talk about more in a later column.

Writing this week's Warp Pipe is a difficult task; I've been as sick as a dog for a week, and there's copy of Super Smash Bros. Brawl sitting on my desk. Much of the week was spent being grumpy at Australia Post for not delivering the game on time (usually 7 days from Canada, it took 10). Having only toyed with the latest fighting effort from Nintendo for roughly an hour, I can't make a definitive judgment, but I will say it is damn good fun. My Xbox 360 also made a triumphant return this week; the turnaround on warranty repair is really quite fast. I'm a little worried about the slower boot speed, but at the moment, it's running the best it has in ages.
This week, we're going to look into the PSP's rather dire software situation, revisit the truly awful Final Fight: Streetwise, and evaluate Winnie Forster's book, The Encyclopedia of Game Machines.

With consoles becoming more complex, and containing more powerful hardware, there is bound to be a few issues here and there. The Xbox 360 has its formidable "Red Ring of Death", whilst the PS3 initially had issues with backwards compatibility before being promptly scrapped or severely cut down for most of the world.
It seems now it is Nintendo's turn to join the camp of having a console with some issues, albeit minor. There have been some reports of Super Smash Brothers: Brawl causing disc read errors with some Wii consoles, due to lasers which have had some intimacies with dust.
The issue is caused by Super Smash Brothers: Brawl shipping on a dual layer disc, which is more demanding of the laser which reads the disc. The issue can be resolved simply by shipping the console back to Nintendo, and they'll fix it, free of charge.

Usually for The Warp Pipe, March requires a certain writer's wallet to be sealed within a heavily secured vault to prevent him from spending too much money on games he'll leave sitting on shelf. Fortunately this year, a combination of lower income and a distinct lack of anything interesting being released, my wallet shall remain firmly pressed against my buttocks (with the exception of my import copies of Super Smash Bros. Brawl and Okami: Wii Edition). I'm really surprised as March used to represent a dumping ground for PAL publishers for all of those titles that hit North American at Christmas time. Ignoring Nintendo, does that imply that the situation is getting better? The games that were delayed seem to be mostly niche titles – Beautiful Katamari, Persona 3, Odin Sphere. We should really be thankful that they're getting released here at all.
This week, we'll weigh in on the recent movements in the corporate world, take a look at Activision's bizarre (and rather offensive) way of trying to teach Spanish on the DS, and revisit the hackneyed Wing Commander movie.

So here we are with the second edition of The Warp Pipe, Internode Games Network's Sunday morning editorial. The reaction to the first article of the series was obviously good enough to keep me around a bit more, and I'm happy to continue to serve the Internode overlords so long as they give me scraps from the table and take me for walks. It took three of them to pry me away from the awesomeness that is Audiosurf this week, and they had to chain me to the desk and whip me every half hour to ensure I didn't go back to it.
As for the column itself, we're going to stick to the same formula from here on out, so if you don't like it have a whinge to your mum. She's the only one that'll care. Our main topic this week may contain sensitive issues for some Sega fans, but I'm sure they're used to the abuse by now.

What will you remember 2007 for, in terms of gaming?
We asked some of the game admins and network staff to find out their thoughts, but I'll give you a quick recap first:
Australia got the PS3 in a bit of an anti-climactic launch, bringing with it a bit of resistance, as well as a stormy racer. We got a new Command & Conquer, another episode of Half-Life 2, a final Halo and didn't get the latest Grand Theft Auto. The world was thrown into "what-if?" with a little game from Massive, a motley crew of cartoons finally arrived, making up Team Fortress 2, and the Call of Duty was heard on a more modern battlefield. Ingame physics were turned on their head and flipped inside-out with Valve's puzzling Portal, our favourite four-fingered family arrived on almost every console known to man, first-person shooters got genetically-engineered, and the world was overrun by pocket monsters, both handheld and motion-sensitive. It's also been a big year for a little Italian plumber, who not only took over the soccer field, he also had a party or two and even headed into space, as well as turning somewhat more two-dimensional. Blizzard released their first MMO expansion, announced their second, revealed that 9 million people played World of Warcraft, took the covers off of StarCraft II, and still managed to keep tight-lipped on their new project.
The Games Network has done a whole bunch of work behind the scenes, making things a lot nicer and easier to work with, even if it looks pretty much the same. One of the major changes would be the upgrade to our file mirror, which now boasts 10 terabytes of space, so there's plenty of room for games, demos, screenshots, videos and patches. We also upgraded our staff, getting a whole new person to work for us, as well as a handful of new newsbots to bring you updates and good stories.
As a team, we tended to stay pretty close to home this year (other than sending representatives to eGames in Melbourne, GO3 in Perth, and BlizzCon in LA!), but we took the time to recognise the local guys with a big meetup for our Adelaide members, volunteers and gamers on the Australia Day long weekend last year. We had a whole pub to ourselves!
Overall, we must be doing something right, as every month, it seems we get bigger and bigger, with more visits, downloads and members! ...and, of course, you guys are the most important thing. Thanks for all your support, whether you're a regular visitor, someone who pops in from time to time, or just someone who keeps an eye out for interesting files in our library.
Bring on 2008 - but first, read on to find out what the admins, staff and volunteers have to say about 2007!

There's been some ongoing fuss about Super Smash Bros. Brawl this week, largely stemming from Nintendo's European release schedule being announced up until the middle of next year - with no Brawl in sight! What could this mean?
Nintendo UK have come out and said that they haven't ruled out the possibility of an early arrival, but there are still no promises about when we might see the game's PAL release - which, of course, affects us Aussies as well!
...meanwhile, this week, we have for you: The return of the Temple stage (including music!), some news on playing with your Friends ingame, a whole posse of Pokémon, some more music, some details on how the Smash Ball works, and an introduction to King Dedede's Final Smash.

In order to rectify that problem, here's a bumper two-week update for you, full of all sorts of goodies. ...if my maths is correct, I think that this marks the six-month anniversary of these updates, too. That's an awful lot of brawling!

Not that I'm trying to steal Max's thunder, but I've got a new tidbit to add to his Super Smash Bros Brawl weekly update. Some of you were asking earlier about what controller SSBB would use - and we have an answer for you!
Will it be the Classic Controller? The Wiimote? The Wiimote + Nunchuk combo? What about the old-school GameCube Controller?

Recently Nintendo Australia held a media conference. At the media conference, Nintendo Australia confirmed that we will get Super Paper Mario sometime this year. But the release date for the "Big Three" is still in question for the Australian release.
The "Big Three" titles are Metroid Prime 3: Corruption, Super Smash Bros. Brawl and Super Mario Galaxy. It was a little over a week now when Mr Reggie Fils-Aime confirmed at the US Nintendo News Summit that the US would expect the "Big Three" titles before December 31, 2007.

Looking back, what will 2006 be most remembered for, gameswise? Obviously, there's the Wii, and everything that came with it - Zelda, Rayman, cracked TVs, which is probably a highlight for most people. There's also Battlefield 2142, which let a lot of people down and didn't do much to restore faith in EA/Dice. Then there was a little game about thermonuclear war, which took the world by storm (ha!), surprising even the developers. 2006 also saw E3 change significantly, and countless similar events pop up around the globe to pick up the slack, meaning gamers have no shortage of events.
Speaking of shortages, the PS3 was delayed in Australia, while Wii was launched, and the Xbox 360 plodded along happily, among brightly coloured pinatas and killer locusts.
On a more local level - the Internode Games Network has doubled in size. We now boast an impressive news portal, a comprehensive File Library and get more than 100,000 unique visitors a month (and more than 20,000 downloads a week). Server-side, there are now eight more quad-core machines hosting game servers (with three more on order), in four cities around Australia - giving more than 2,000 peak players a night somewhere to play.
We've written up a few questions and handed them around to various Internode Games Network types, to find out about their highlights, lowlights and memorable events of 2006.
