Ubisoft announce increase in recent earnings
Ubisoft Entertainment have announced that their sales for the first half of 2008-09 fiscal year have exceeded expectations, in spite of any perceived global economic crisis. Increased sales has also seen Ubisoft record increased income. Sales increased by €175 million to €344 million, about 30% higher than the same time last year, when Ubisoft reported sales of €261 million.

This success has been attributed to the successful launches of Brothers in Arms: Hell's Highway, and a European distribution deal for Soulcalibur IV. Some of Ubisoft's casual games such as Imagine Teacher also contributed to higher sales.

Truck stolen along with $1.4 million in games
It really reads like the plot of a Grand Theft Auto mission, especially if you consider events from the perpetrator's point of view. After getting into position, you wait patiently for the driver to stop for a cup of coffee before making a dash for it and driving off with a truck packed full of video games. The cops are swiftly on your tail, so you abandon the truck and leg it. Shortly afterwards, with a countdown timer ticking, you break into the police compound where your booty is stashed, awaiting the collection of fingerprinting and DNA evidence, make off with the goods for a second time, unload your precious cargo and dump the empty truck in a car park. Surely that never happens in the real world?

The Warp Pipe - 21/09/08
The Holiday flood begins this Thursday with the release of an ungodly amount of games, including Brothers in Arms: Hell’s Highway, Crysis Warhead and Wipeout HD, and doesn’t stop until the week before Christmas. To save you all a bit of time, I like to run through the release list at the start of a given quarter, and make sweeping generalisations as to the quality of upcoming games.

Last week’s Warp Pipe covered the games of October, so this week we’re looking at November’s big hitters, including Gears of War 2, Left 4 Dead and Mirror’s Edge.

Brothers in Arms: Hell's Highway gold, PC version delayed by a few days
Brothers in Arms: Hell's Highway has gone gold, with the title on track for release on the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 on the 23rd of September in the United States. The game will be available to Australian gamers on the 25th. While console owners will be able to play the title a few days earlier, a delay (of an undefined nature) appears to have pushed back the PC release of the title until the first of October.

The upcoming release of Brothers in Arms: Hell's Highway marks the transition of the franchise onto "next-gen" consoles, making use of HD graphics and dramatically increased detail over previous instalments in the series. As a result of the title going gold, Gearbox Software and UbiSoft have released a new trailer "Brutality of War" in order to commemorate the occasion.

Now Playing (12/08/08)
Everywhere at the moment there is one event being covered and while I've been sitting at the TV cheering for whoever is on, some people might like to avoid that topic for at least a minute. Fear not readers! I avoided all trailers and even the word about said event. So you can come in, relax and see what games have poked our interests this week.

This week we look at some clones swimming in a nation of dams. I find one of my favourite metallic games gets a new trailer that will see it rise above ancient times. We also see what the highway brothers are up to and hope they aren't the nice guys that finish last.

Now Playing - E3 Special Day 1
I mentioned last week that Now Playing would have a nice little role for E3 and bring you something special. Every night this week, Now Playing will be bringing you some of the many, many trailers we receive this week from the E3 Media & Business Summit.

Leading off for this special event is a few heroes and villains in pieces, an original project that is a little fearful and an empire that seems to be, once again, experiencing war. Also we have a nice round up of all the other trailers that have caught our attention. Stay tuned sports fans as this week is only going to get more exciting!

The Warp Pipe - 06/07/08
Mid-year sales tend to be pretty awful, but one particular Australian retailer was running out a lot of stock for around the $5 mark, mainly on the PC, PS2, DS and Xbox 360. Needless to say, this week, I came home a couple of hundred dollars poorer and weighed down by bags of games, yet could not find many of the titles I wanted due to the store having been raided by people buying up multiple copies of the one game to trade or sell on eBay. Such is life. I'm still trying to wrestle my way through Alone in the Dark on the Xbox 360, a game with some stunning ideas, but absolutely horrendous controls and far too many bugs and glitches.

This week, The Warp Pipe will look at the current Q3 release list, gauging the perceived level of hype and giving a brief impression as to the quality of each game.

Brothers in Arms: Hell's Highway Destructible environments Q&A
The Brothers in Arms series is renowned for its blend of gritty realism and highly tactical gameplay. With World War II shooters ubiquitous, it takes a fair bit of arm-flailing for an individual title to gather much attention.

You might recall a trailer for Brothers in Arms: Hell's Highway we showed you a little while back which featured examples of the destructible environments present in the game. Gearbox Software have recently a Q&A session with two of their employees.

Brothers in Arms: Hell's Highway - new trailer
With the plethora of shooters based on World War 2 on the market, there are few undiscovered gems that don't really receive the same sort of coverage as the Medal of Honor and Call of Duty series. One such gem is the Brothers in Arms series of games, which has never seemed to have the same sort of reception or widespread press as the other major WW2 titles.

Brothers In Arms: Hell's Highway is set for release around about August - and is the first entry for the series in the high definition gaming world with a release for PC, PS3, and Xbox 360. We've got some new screenshots and a new trailer for you to look at, which follows on from some facts about the game we published quite some time ago.

The Warp Pipe - 06/04/08
The horrendous Melbourne weather did its best to prevent The Warp Pipe happening this week by knocking the power out multiple times and damn near sending a tree through my car's windshield. I've spent much of my week playing the despicable Two Worlds for the Xbox 360; it's the first console game I've played to date where I have had to enter in commands into an in-game console in order to turn off special effects like dynamic lighting and shadows in order to get the game to run at a playable speed. Maybe Microsoft should give the 360 a new slogan along the lines of "bringing the worst parts of PC gaming into your living room".

This week, we're going to run through the second quarter release schedule and make judgment calls on which ones are going to be worth your time. We'll also give our impressions of Contra 4, a game which mysteriously remains unreleased in Australia. Finally, we'll revisit the SiN anime movie.

Ubisoft's Holiday Lineup - Where is PC Assassin's Creed?
One of the world's largest video game publishers - Ubisoft has just confirmed its holiday 2007 lineup. At this late stage in the game, it's pretty much the lineup you'd expect (but it's still nice to see them all in one place and confirmed)... but there's a bombshell contained within the neat, clean, professional presentation.

Assassin's Creed, the long-awaited "next-gen" title will not be making it to PC this year. In a move bucking recent trends, the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions are apparently on-track for a November release, but you PC gamers will have to wait until early next year.

...fortunately there's a whole lot of other games coming out in the next few months, but I know, not meeting Altair by Christmas is a big deal. Sorry!

Brothers In Arms has been a pretty solid squad based shooter. Originally developed using the Unreal Engine the game added a level of authenticity which had been missing with previous WWII releases and was a welcome addition to the genre.
