EA Flips out
What do the words Electronic Arts bring to mind? I am ashamed to admit I am picturing a pair of young men in baseball caps, smashing beer cans on their foreheads and shouting "WHOOO" at the latest annual Madden title.

What I do not picture is a range of eBooks for the DS as one of the publisher's major holiday season bids. No, not even with the cutely marketed name of Flips. Which just goes to show, I am utterly, utterly wrong.

Madden NFL 10 unprofitable; EA shuck blame
While AFL games are produced mainly with the Australian market in mind, for some reason the United States thinks their own brand of country-specific football ought to hold great interest for the rest of the world. They're not always wrong, and the Madden franchise is a firm console favourite of many a gamer, but the series is getting on a bit in years and qualifies for much of the same criticism as EA's other sports titles.

Apparently most of us feel they can give this year's iteration a miss, as Madden NFL 10 exhibits worryingly poor sales in its first month.

Is the App Store ruining portable gaming?
This week saw the raising of a worrying question: is there a shift taking place in portable gaming that will drive core gamers away from the hand held platforms?

Those of you who stick firmly by Windows or Linux probably didn't notice anything beyond perhaps an iTunes update, but it's been quite an exciting few days in the Apple world. The company voted "most likely to cause a generation of damaged hearing" held a special media event to reveal their intentions for the future of the iPod and iPhone range. During his remarks to the gathered press, co-founder and CEO Steve Jobs described their phenomenally popular products as legitimate contenders for the portable gaming throne.

The Warp Pipe - 23/08/2009
Earlier this week I got stuck into Madden NFL 10 for my yearly dose of American Football and the associated review. Pressure is on these sports games developers to deliver new features year after year, despite the rather constricted 12 month production style they face. Sometimes major features introduced in one year of a sports game will be axed two or three years down the track – and in some cases even reintroduced as “new” features down the line.

This week, The Warp Pipe will look at some of the major sports game features which have been cut over the years.

Coming Attractions - 05/08/2009
The winter drought is in full swing this week, with a few last minute delays making this one of the quietest weeks of the year. In fact, there are no new releases on the vast majority of formats this week, with just one new title each for the PS3 and Xbox 360. On the digital distribution front, we have the remake of arcade classic Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Turtles in Time coming out tonight, while on the retail side, Ashes Cricket 2009 marks the sport’s debut on the PlayStation 3, while From Software’s latest over the top action endeavour Ninja Blade will land on store shelves on Friday.

The Warp Pipe - 24/05/09
During the week, while my created fighter was having his face pummelled by a superior opponent in UFC 2009 Undisputed, I couldn’t help but think about how much busier this May has been. In years past, many writers have been starved for work in May – this year I’m struggling to get on top of it. Such a thing is not made any easier by the fact I can’t stop buying games for my personal gaming, particularly imports.

In a vain attempt to justify the time and money spent on these games, I thought we’d take a look at a few games that are currently big on the import scene.
