Warhammer Online takes Macs to the anvil
While PC gamers have been levelling their characters, and participating in special, fancy events as part of the Call to Arms live expansion, Mac gamers who would have liked to get in on the Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning action have been sitting behind their machines, twiddling their thumbs in the hope that they'd one day see the game running under their native operating system.

While the sane, frustrated, or devoted simply booted into Windows on their Intel based Macs, Mythic Entertainment have thrown Mac owners some hope - a Mac client for the game, which is currently available (in beta form, at least) through the Warhammer Online website to all current players of the game.

Warhammer Online: download the (1.3) Land of the Dead patch early
This isn't your standard midsummer MMOG event. This is the climax, the culmination of events to the first ever live-expansion by Mythic Entertainment for Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning. Already mentioned by Steven, the 16th of June is the opening day for players to explore "The Rise of the Tomb Kings." The event will include exclusive titles for both Order and Chaos, rare items, and a brand new zoned filled with public quests, traps, and RvR combat. All that new content, free, inactive WHO players may not want to miss out on the third and final chapter in the Call to Arms saga.

That means a massive patch is in store. The 1.3 Game Update patch is available for early download now and nears 900MB in size. Trailblazers will definitely want to grab this pre-launch patch before the dead rise.

Warhammer Online: Dark Storm Gathering novel available now
The one flaw that is present in all MMOs is the inability to take them on the road with you (unless, of course you have a fancy pants laptop and roaming, wireless Internet). To remedy this tiny shortcoming in relation to Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning - Games Workshop's literary arm, The Black Library has announced that the second novel backed by the Warhammer Online universe is now available.

Entitled Dark Storm Gathering, the novel, penned by Chris Wraight is sure to delight those who simply must have facets of the Warhammer Online universe follow them around at all times of day, be it on the bus, in bed, or while waiting for some exciting quest or exclamation mark to appear above the head of real-world NPCs in their day-to-day real-world adventures.

Blood Bowl: Putting contact back into sports
It's been quite a while since we gave any attention to Blood Bowl. Blessed with a mixed parentage, this gridiron-like game based in a fantasy universe comes from French developers Cyanide, the creators of Chaos League. Not only could Blood Bowl be said to be Cyanide's spiritual successor to their previous sports title, it is a kind of remake of the 1995 game of the same name, and is based on a successful miniatures game from Games Workshop. With that kind of heritage, we have to expect some interesting results, and these new screens look the business.

Warhammer Online - Massive 1.2 Patch Release
We love big patches. Apparently, so do the guys at Warhammer Online, who have just rolled out their Version 1.2 patch, which boasts a changelog the likes of which you've never seen before. It's so big, in fact, that we're only featuring an excerpt here, and even that is longer than most standard patches.

The problem with this patch being so big is that the powers that be have announced that Warhammer Online can only be updated through the in-game service, with no external downloading capabilities. So, not only can we not host the files, we don't know quite how many of your megabytes this one will take up.

...but, if you're into a bit of WAAAGH!, don't let this stop you, the patch will fall into place the next time you play, and for now, you can read the highlight version of the changelog, right here.

Severe job cuts hit Mythic Entertainment, developers of Warhammer Online
We're in the teeth of the recession and the financial meltdown continues to batter the gaming industry. Yesterday, Electronic Arts announced plans to close 12 offices, downside their 2010 game portfolio to 50 titles, and buck-down on spending which means another round of layoffs to hit company-wide. In all, 11% percent of the total workforce is up on the chopping block. That's over 1100 positions ranging from low-level staff and into the upper echelons of corporate will cease to exist.

That means no studio under Electronic Arts wing is safe from layoffs and a huge axe fell upon Mythic Entertainment cuttingt a swath through a huge number of employees working on Warhammer Online. This comes one day after finding out Warhammer Online's 300k subscription count. Mark Jacobs CEO of Mythic Entertainment updated fans on the unfortunate downsizing and what it means for Warhammer: Age of Reckoning.

The Warp Pipe - 14/12/08
With Christmas rapidly approaching, The Warp Pipe is calling time for 2008. After 45 columns without a break this year, I’m clocking off a little early to read a few books, watch some movies, replay some of 2008’s best games and of course, fly to Queensland to spend Christmas with the family. The Warp Pipe will be back on the 18th of January with a few minor tweaks and a couple of bold predictions for 2009.

Speaking of bold proclamations, The Warp Pipe made a few just before the start of the second, third and final quarters of the year. I thought we’d use the final column of the year evaluating my ability to predict the quality of soon-to-be-released video games.

Warhammer Online: The 1.1a patch is live (dun dun dun)
Rejoice or panic, better wait until the download is finished. What download you ask. The first part of the behemoth patch (1.1a) has arrived to save the folly that is Warhammer Online. At least that’s what the bean counters at Electronic Arts and Mythic Entertainment are hoping for in order to reach that elusive million subscriber count. Too their credit, the development team has pumped out the target-patches in a timely fashion and the game is much better off.

The 1.1 Patch is so gigantic it can’t be contained so it’s split into two parts. Who knows when Part B is coming but there’s plenty enough content in Part A to make your head spin or explode from nerd rage.

Warhammer Online expansion planned but stalled
Remember how many times Warhammer Online was delayed? It was a lot and looking back on it was a bit painful. But it was downright insane to believe the game would make the original launch date since it was slated for two years after the original announcement. That ambition and development cycle is unprecedented in the terms of big budget MMOGs as most average four years in development. Instead it took a little over three years to ship and now the development team is playing catch-up with the main game as seen with the recent Contribution System debacle.

What does this mean for Warhammer Online’s first expansion? Other than theoretical design actual development is officially on the backburner until the main game is more or less completed and ready for one.

Warhammer Online: 1.06 Patch brings a slew of combat and career updates

Patch 1.06 attempts to fix the smorgasbord of combat and career issues in hopes to revitalize this crucial area of the game.

Two new careers, Blackguards and Knights of the Blazing Sun are available for play if active subscribers completed the Heavy Metal event. If you didn’t take part in the event don’t worry, both careers will become available to everyone next week. Many careers have also had their mastery points refunded, and there are some performance updates and bug fixes too.

Financial fumble at Electronic Arts results in massive workforce cuts

Australian Weekly Video Game Charts - Week Ending 21/09/08
The charts this week are pretty much a one-game affair. The newest title in a long-running film/book/game saga has swept the Australian nation and taken the whole country by storm.

Yes, Star Wars: The Force Unleashed (which was partially developed down here by local guys Krome) is pretty much running the show, taking out top honours for Xbox 360 (top overall), PS3, PS2 and PSP, 2nd on the Wii (behind Wii Fit), and 8th on the DS. By my calculations, that's a top-10 chart position for every platform it was released on. Well done to you!

MMO is Massively Multiplayer Online, as it relates to games that a lot of people can play online at once, in a persistent world.
EA is Electronic Arts, a video game publisher.
