Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 prestige edition revealed
Many gamers argue that the collector's edition is a pretty useless thing to get your hands on, as generally, all you get is a pretty box, an art book, and nothing else very interesting. While there is exceptions to this rule, there is also stuff that has a fairly high novelty factor, such as the newly titled Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2.

Not content with one or two collector's editions, Infinity Ward are keen to to show off three different versions of the game. They're so excited, in fact, about what the fancy, "prestige" edition will offer gamers that they've made a video showing us everything that can be found in the box.

World in Conflict breaks into Patch 11 territory
It is hard to believe that World in Conflict came out nearly two years ago, and it is still getting bug fixes, patches, and new content released on a regular basis.

Today has seen the release of the much fabled and eagerly awaited Patch 11, which addresses several balancing issues and bugs, many of which become more noticeable with the advent of Patch 10 and the release of the game's first expansion, Soviet Assault.

In addition to a bunch of much needed changes, the new patch adds four new maps, which are available to all owners of the game for free!

Logitech G9x Mouse (Hardware Review)
First, there was the G5 and the G7, a pair of mice released by Logitech to target the gaming market. Then came the G9 - which was pretty darn awesome, from all accounts.

...but that wasn't good enough, and we now find ourselves looking at the G9x, a revised version of the laser gaming mouse, which boasts the same design, specs and ergonomics as the earlier model - but this time around, you'll be able to adjust the precision up to a whopping 5000 DPI, from the G9's 3200.

Want to know how it works? Steven Perdikis has a review that will tell you just that.

G13 Advanced Gameboard (Hardware Review)
For most people, a keyboard is a simple, multi-use bit of computer hardware. It can be used for working, chatting, gaming, or collecting crumbs when you are eating in front of the monitor again.

For some people, however, it's just not enough. Or, more to the point, it's too much, and they're looking for something simpler. Enter the game pad, which is like a cut-down keyboard, used solely for gaming (I know, it's a shock).

We've seen various incarnations of the game pad come through, from various different manufacturers and designers, and the latest to cross our threshold is the Logitech G13 Advanced Gameboard, which the lovely Steven Perdikis has taken for a test drive.

World in Conflict Patch 11 Beta to launch soon, with four new maps!
World in Conflict is still alive and kicking, driven by the recent release of World in Conflict: Soviet Assault. However, upon the release of Soviet Assault, and a patch that was released at the same time, there has been a number of issues that the community has been fairly vocal about.

In short, the Infantry role has been broken somewhat, with units unresponsive and very keen to die, and the medium chopper is now considered extremely over powered, as it has the ability to fire upon targets directly below it. As a result, Massive Entertainment have braced themselves against the tide of forum posts regarding these issues, and have announced, that prior to the release of the much-awaited Patch 11, a beta test will be held, and will be open to all who own the game!

In addition, the Patch 11 beta will grant access to four new maps, each created in house at Massive.

2008 - a year in review
What will you remember 2008 for, in terms of gaming?

We asked some of the game admins and network staff to find out their thoughts, but here's a quick recap of the past 12 months, to refresh your memory.

Non-games dominated this year's charts, with Wii Fit rewarding gamers for standing still. As a country, we were still fans of the music game genre too, finally getting our hands on Rock Band, which seemed to have been pushed onto shelves by the release of Guitar Hero: World Tour a week later. Who knows, the full-band version may even have healed some hurt caused by the "interesting" yet awkward Guitar Hero: On Tour release for DS. There was a new Call of Duty to heed, a new Bond to meet, Marcus and Dom were back, and independent developers twisted our brains with Braid and our rhythm skills with Audiosurf. Red Alert was back, and we revisited the Midnight Club. We also saw the release of the "Three Fs" - Far Cry 2, Fable 2, and Fallout 3, meaning many gamers were a bit strapped for cash by the end of the year.
...and, who could forget? 2008 is the year we met Sackboy!

2007 - a year in review
What will you remember 2007 for, in terms of gaming?

We asked some of the game admins and network staff to find out their thoughts, but I'll give you a quick recap first:
Australia got the PS3 in a bit of an anti-climactic launch, bringing with it a bit of resistance, as well as a stormy racer. We got a new Command & Conquer, another episode of Half-Life 2, a final Halo and didn't get the latest Grand Theft Auto. The world was thrown into "what-if?" with a little game from Massive, a motley crew of cartoons finally arrived, making up Team Fortress 2, and the Call of Duty was heard on a more modern battlefield. Ingame physics were turned on their head and flipped inside-out with Valve's puzzling Portal, our favourite four-fingered family arrived on almost every console known to man, first-person shooters got genetically-engineered, and the world was overrun by pocket monsters, both handheld and motion-sensitive. It's also been a big year for a little Italian plumber, who not only took over the soccer field, he also had a party or two and even headed into space, as well as turning somewhat more two-dimensional. Blizzard released their first MMO expansion, announced their second, revealed that 9 million people played World of Warcraft, took the covers off of StarCraft II, and still managed to keep tight-lipped on their new project.

The Games Network has done a whole bunch of work behind the scenes, making things a lot nicer and easier to work with, even if it looks pretty much the same. One of the major changes would be the upgrade to our file mirror, which now boasts 10 terabytes of space, so there's plenty of room for games, demos, screenshots, videos and patches. We also upgraded our staff, getting a whole new person to work for us, as well as a handful of new newsbots to bring you updates and good stories.

As a team, we tended to stay pretty close to home this year (other than sending representatives to eGames in Melbourne, GO3 in Perth, and BlizzCon in LA!), but we took the time to recognise the local guys with a big meetup for our Adelaide members, volunteers and gamers on the Australia Day long weekend last year. We had a whole pub to ourselves!

Overall, we must be doing something right, as every month, it seems we get bigger and bigger, with more visits, downloads and members! ...and, of course, you guys are the most important thing. Thanks for all your support, whether you're a regular visitor, someone who pops in from time to time, or just someone who keeps an eye out for interesting files in our library.

Bring on 2008 - but first, read on to find out what the admins, staff and volunteers have to say about 2007!

World in Conflict - Hotfix #0004, Plus User-Created Maps For Download
To little fanfare, Massive have released an update to World in Conflict. The update brings the game to v1.0.0.4, and is a hot fix to patch #0003, released recently, which fixes some urgent issues.

In addition to hosting the patch (in all its various forms), we've also gotten hold of some custom maps which have been created since the recent release of WiCEd, which is World In Conflict's Map Editor. Don't forget to update it with its latest hotfix, which fixes many crash issues within the editor itself.

This is the third update for the game, adding enhancements to replays, a function that gives gamers the ability to re-join a clan match if their connection drops, as well as a pile of other stuff.

Patch #003 also tweaks some bugs and stability issues, and adds extra features to Massgate – now you can ignore messages from disruptive players!

World In Conflict Broadcast Tool Has Arrived, Comrade.
The new Broadcast Tool for World in Conflict is finally here! We told you about it on Sunday, and it arrived last night.

To refresh your memory, this is a supplementary tool that you can use to record and display all your World in Conflict matches. It uses the DX10-exclusive dual-screen feature (if you've only got DX9, don't despair, read on!), and users can choose between a whole bunch of cameras in order to fully capture the match in all its glory.

Now... if you haven't gotten DX10 yet and still want to try this out, we've got a bit of a hacky work-around that will enable people to use the Tool with their DX9 install.

World In Conflict - new Broadcast Tool due this week!
World in Conflict is getting a brand new Broadcast Tool this week. That's a downloadable, free add-on for the title, which gives gamers with Vista and DX10 easy-to-use television-style broadcast options ingame.

Pre-set and custom cameras, follow-cameras, telestration and other capabilities all combine, turning any LAN game or tournament (or recorded demo!) into a fun-to-watch spectator event - because the entirety of the broadcasted match can be saved directly from the tool and shared with anyone you like: friends, clan-members, community websites, or even your competition.

Good Game - Season 3, Ep 3 Preview
What is it about the hardcore? Why do the hardcore get harder? Why do the lesser of us desire to become hardcore, and follow suit? And if the hardcore only make up 5% of the gaming market, why are we still so loved? Maybe I'm mistaken, as nearly every publisher recently invested in a casual games development studio. But this week (if not this quarter) says different.

Here's a little preview of Ep 3, screening tonight at 8:30 on ABC2, 10:30pm Thursday on ABC2, and Friday around midnight, just before Rage on ABC. As always, it's all available for download at www.abc.net.au/goodgame (free traffic for Internode customers)!

For those who haven't been playing the PC version of World In Conflict, released last month, and have been hanging out for the Xbox 360 version, you'll have to hold onto your nuke strikes a little while longer.

Sierra have announced that the Xbox 360 version will be pushed back till "early next year". Sierra gave no reason to the delay or even an exact release date. It could have something to do with the PC version getting a patch released later this week, or it could be because of the already over-stocked game shelves for Christmas.
