What have the gaming public been buying this week via digital distribution platform Steam? Stuff that you can't get in Australia, apparently. Left 4 Dead 2 somehow managed to be the top seller, (so much for a boycott?), and it was followed by the first game documenting Valve's Zombie Apocalypse. Aion was popular... again, and the other forbidden title also sold heavily through Steam - the RPG, Risen.
If you want to what else sold the most last week, you'll just have to check out the Steam Top Sellers for the week ending October 4th!

What have the gaming public been buying this week via digital distribution platform Steam? ... Aion, lots of Aion so much in fact, that the game took out both spot one and two on the Steam Top Sellers chart this week. Aion was followed by Fallen Earth, while the PC version of Batman: Arkham Asylum also sold a fair few copies. The top five was rounded out by F.E.A.R. 2: Project Origin.

What have the gaming public been buying this week via digital distribution platform Steam? ... Aion, again. So many copies of Aion. Batman Arkham Asylum took out the number two position following rave reviews, and was closely followed by the PC version of Resident Evil 5. Aspiring Jedi were seduced by video games exploiting their adventures, and Garry's Mod managed to sell a fair few copies.

Eidos has released the first patch for the PC version of Batman: Arkham Asylum. Updating your copy of the game to version 1.1 will introduce full support for PhysX, nVIDIA's proprietary physics modeling system.
Why PhysX was not supported right out of the box is unclear; though this could be part of yet another elaborate scheme to humiliate software pirates.

The latest video game to star the Dark Knight has shipped over two and a half million copies world-wide. Starring Kevin Conroy as Batman and Mark Hamill as the Joker, Batman: Arkham Asylum has won gushing praise from fans and critics alike for its brutal combat and genuinely sinister atmosphere.
This is quite a turnaround for UK developer Rocksteady. The studio's debut game, Urban Chaos: Riot Response, sold poorly in spite of its excellence. Arkham Asylum's success vindicates Rocksteady's efforts; it would be safe to assume that a sequel is in the planning stages, and that the studio's immediate future is assured.

In our recent review of Batman: Arkham Asylum, there were a few negative comments in the feedback section regarding perceived spoilers. The events referred to in the complaints about the review actually appear not only in the first hour of the game, but also in the game’s publicity materials, including its many trailers and on the packaging. So where do you draw the line when it comes to spoilers?
This week, The Warp Pipe will examine the nature of video game spoilers and discuss the introduction of a statute of limitations.

While AFL games are produced mainly with the Australian market in mind, for some reason the United States thinks their own brand of country-specific football ought to hold great interest for the rest of the world. They're not always wrong, and the Madden franchise is a firm console favourite of many a gamer, but the series is getting on a bit in years and qualifies for much of the same criticism as EA's other sports titles.
Apparently most of us feel they can give this year's iteration a miss, as Madden NFL 10 exhibits worryingly poor sales in its first month.

Oh. Well, that kind of ruins the suspense. Batman: Arkham Asylum might have found it appropriate to tease us by coyly announcing upcoming DLC, but the guys over at the European Playstation Blog obviously don't feel the need to play hard to get. It's still uncertain as to whether both consoles will receive the same content, but it seems the Playstation 3 can expect two content packs in short order, one of which apparently contains the added content from the collector's edition.

Have you finished Batman: Arkham Asylum yet? No? What's wrong with you? It's been out for days. I've finished it, and I ... had an advance copy, and play games for a living all day long. Hmm, perhaps I'll get off my high horse. Nevertheless I know I'm not the only person to have reached the end of the game, collected everything possible, set a few challenge records, and then stared mournfully at the screen, hoping against hope that somehow, more game would materialise...
Apparently, it will, and in just over a week! How did I obtain such valuable information? Who's my inside source? Um... the main menu.

In case you missed it, Batman: Arkham Asylum should be available in stores today. If you had planned on entering your local gaming emporium with your hard earned dollars hoping that you'd pick up the game for the usual "I'm a next-gen new release" price point of AU$109.95, prepare to feel a little shafted.
The RRP of blockbuster title is escalating a little bit, with you now expected to part with AU$119.95 if you were to buy the game at the RRP. While we all know that gamers who are savvy enough won't part with such frivolous amounts of money (a quick Google search is likely to save you around $20-30 on the title) let's consider for a moment the uneducated masses that are the gaming public, and just how much more money this is going to inject into Eidos and Rocksteady Studios.

It’s the last weekend before the beginning of the traditional holiday rush, where players are flooded with new game releases and essentially spoilt for choice. We’ve all been through this rigmarole before and despite the fact that this year’s line-up is a little thinner thanks to key delays and early releases, we’re still going to be suffering from light wallets and a lack of free time by the end of November.
Like every holiday season before it, there are going to be winners and losers. This week, The Warp Pipe is going to focus on the wildcard releases of the holidays – the games that could be big hits, or fail to catch on.

On Thursday, it was announced that the PC demo of Batman: Arkham Asylum was due to launch the next day. Friday ended ten hours ago, with no demo in sight. That has now changed, with the 2.04GB PC demo for Batman: Arkham Asylum finally having been released.
The PC version of the game features NVIDIA PhysX technology, which promises to provide an "even deeper level of engagement". The PhysX technology allows corridors in the game to be filled with volumetric fog, and cobwebs which are damaged as Batman passes through them. Other enhancements that the PC version sees is improved particle systems and more detailed visuals.
In order for players to enjoy the PC demo (with the above mentioned features) they will need a NVIDIA GPU that supports PhysX. (Anything better than a 88xx card will do). In addition to the actual demo a behind the scenes video has been released, talking about the game's animation - which you can watch while you wait for the demo to download!

Shortly after we've been tormented for our sins, we discover that in actual fact, we were stuck in an asylum, which may or may not have once been inhabited by insane members of the army.

Back in 1982, one of the world's first interactive multimedia companies was founded in Sydney. By the end of the decade Ozisoft was labelled Australia's biggest international software distributor, thanks largely to a deal representing Sega.
The next ten years saw the company, Sega Ozisoft, representing and distributing some of the world's largest publishers throughout Australia and New Zealand, before Sega leaving the company in 1998. Later that year, Ozisoft was bought out by Infogrames, who acquired 100% ownership in 2002. A year later, the company changed their name to what was then known as Atari Australia.
...and now, in 2009, we can reveal that the company has changed hands again, and are officially known as Namco Bandai Partners.

Next up the plate to announce their E3 2009 line up is UK-based publisher Eidos Interactive, who were recently acquired by Japanese giant SquareEnix. The line-up from Eidos isn't massive, with only three titles to be shown off in Los Angeles.
From Eidos we can expect to see more of much awaited Batman: Arkham Asylum, new IP Mini Ninjas, and open-world action game sequel Just Cause 2.
It is a little bit sad to see that big name titles currently in development by Eidos studios aren't making the trip to Los Angeles, with no sign of Deus Ex 3 or Thief 4.

Batman, the caped crusader, and an iconic super hero for two generations is set to make a return to the video game later this year, in Batman: Arkham Asylum. First announced in August last year, with plans for the game to be a "dark, action packed adventure", the Rocksteady Studios developed game will place players in the shoes of Batman, who finds himself trapped inside Arkham Asylum - surrounded by the "most dangerous villains".
In Batman: Arkham Asylum, players will need to stick to the shadows within the Asylum, where they will "instigate fear amongst their enemies", confront the Joker, and deal with Gotham City's "most notorious villains", who have taken over the asylum. Today, we've got some fresh details regarding the game, which will be penned by Paul Dini - who worked on the first season of the TV show Lost, and Batman: The Animated Series.

On behalf of DC Comics, Warner Bros and Eidos are very proud to announce the development of Batman: Arkham Asylum, a "dark, action packed adventure" currently in development for PS3 / Xbox 360 / PC, to be released next year.
Developed by Rocksteady Studios, the player pulls on the pointy ears and fluttering cape of Batman, as he delivers The Joker to Arkham Asylum. Sounds simple - but the imprisoned super-villains have set a clever trap, and an immersive combat gaming experience rapidly unfolds. The script has been written by Emmy Award-winning Batman writer, Paul Dini, and promises to bring the Bat-verse to life, with some stunning graphics.
