Infinity Ward creative strategist Robert Bowling has confirmed that in Modern Warfare 2, Aussie gamers won't be able to seek out other Aussie gamers for relatively lag and trauma-free game sessions.
From Bowling's Twitter:
"There isn't an option to search specific regions / countries when matchmaking, but there is improved matchmaking to auto-assist"
This is bad news for Australia...

Apparently Call of Duty: World at War is just a wee bit popular; who would have thought it?! Even though the recently released Map Pack Three has so far only seen an outing on Playstation 3 and Xbox 360, Treyarch saw over a million copies of the content pack roll out over its first weekend.

What have the gaming public been buying this week via digital distribution platform Steam? ... It seems that last week saw most of them respond to the Call of Duty, with the latest World War II title finding a nice home in first place on the charts. It was followed by Aion, which people are still purchasing in mass through Steam. Other people wanted to pick up Left 4 Dead, in order to kill some zombies.
Hearts of Iron III remained in the charts, allowing people to relive World War II in whatever way they find the most entertaining. The top five was rounded up by Counter Strike: Source, which is still selling like hot cakes.
If you want to what else sold the most last week, you'll just have to check out the Steam Top Sellers for the week ending August 16th!

Last week, people wanted to know why the Australian Classification Board decided to swing its ban hammer at the game Risen. Team Fortress 2 remained as popular as ever, with a large update bringing a bunch of new features to the game. Bennett's time with Halo 3: ODST was also in demand. On the demo front, the Darkest of Days demo made a few people's days darker. Finally, information regarding the limited edition of CITIES XL was also popular, suggesting that we'll see a lot of cities built once the game is finally released.

Treyarch aren't everybody's favourite Call of Duty developers, but they're still responsible for two major titles in the series which garner a great deal of online play, and when it comes to the multiplayer experience on Playstation 3 and Xbox 360, they're putting the heat on hackers and modders, with a hotly worded statement from CoD Headquarters.
Legitimate players will shrug off Treyarch's warning, but smugly confident cheaters could be in for a bit of a shock if their entire Playstation Network or Xbox LIVE accounts are suspended.

Welcome to the latest instalment of Now Playing, where each week, Games On Net attempts to introduce our beloved readers to a seemingly random selection of trailers that have been added to the mirror on the past week.
Today, we begin by rising towards a musical trailer of sorts, relishing its general peace before being subjected to chaos and agony thanks to some rather energetic rabbits, that somehow find their way into deadly spaces.
After we get back down to Earth, we find ourselves fighting in World War II, once again, but this time, we're killing zombies, and it is best described as "so beautiful!" After we get over the fact that World War II games will be produced perpetually, we decide that we should hang out with some twisted students as they fight invading demons, which is infinitely more believable than zombies.

Who'dathunk, last week, that we'd be celebrating the news that Sam Raimi had been announced as the director of the Warcraft movie? Gamers are all still fascinated by what's been selling (or not) on Steam, and by the 15-minute walkthrough of Mafia 2, narrated by Denby Grace. We also got information that Episodes from Liberty City will be released in October, just after Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising.
It was a week packed with more than a few interesting bits and pieces - why not take the time to trip down Memory Lane?

One of the most-played online multiplayer games, Call of Duty: World at War is all set to receive reinforcements, in the form of Map Pack 3. Following in the footsteps of the creatively-titled Map Pack 1 and Map Pack 2 (which is now available on PC), the third lot of DLC will boast three new multiplayer maps, and - of course - a new Zombie experience.
Whether you're checking out Battery, Revolution and Breach with your mates, or battling the undead in Der Riese (Zombie Factory), I'm sure you'll agree that when it comes to ongoing game support, Call of Duty: World at War is onto a good thing.

It's a bright and early morning and I've got an update that will make your weekend just that little bit better - finally, the guys at Treyarch have finished the PC patch for Call of Duty: World at War, which means we have the brand new v1.4-1.5 Patch all ready for you to download.
Packed into that 975MB file alongside a few tweaks and bits and pieces is the home computer version of Map Pack 2, which has been out for consoles for a while. That's right, you can now play on Banzai, Corrosion, Sub Pens and even Shi No Numa (Zombie Swamp), just like the guys in the loungeroom.
Oh, and - if that wasn't good enough - there's a shiny new set of Mod Tools out as well, if you're the type who wants to make some new maps.

On the first of April this year, it was announced that the first map pack for Call of Duty: World at War had been purchased over one million times across the Xbox LIVE Marketplace and the PlayStation Network. Today, it has been announced that the map pack has reached yet another milestone, with two million copies having now been purchased for around US$10 a pop, or 800 Microsoft points.
The pack, which includes three maps, and an extra map for the zombie-hunting game mode has proven to be incredibly popular. Even with a rather high price tag for the Australian market (AU$15.95) on the PlayStation Network, it appears that sales from other regions who appear to be more DLC friendly have fuelled sales greatly.

With all the money that has been made from World War II video-games, it is probably likely that the war itself could have been funded several times over by the sales of games such as Call of Duty: World at War.
The latest piece of evidence that suggests this could be a likely scenario has been released by Activision, who have just announced that the recently released map pack for Call of Duty: World at War has sold a staggering one million digital copies in just over a week following its release.

Those nice fellas at Treyarch have been hard at work on Call of Duty: World at War. While the console gamers have already received a shiny new Title Update, which arrived with a daytime version of the MP Makin map (cleverly titled Makin Day, as it's the same map, covered in sunshine), the PC fans have been left twiddling their thumbs, wondering where the fabled new maps are, now that the calendar's turned over to March.

We've also gotten a copy of the changelog, and the major changes here are the introduction of /record and /demo in multiplayer. Enjoy!

Ever wondered just what the Australian gaming public are buying? We've got the latest charts for you that will give you all the details you need to know, for all the major platforms.
So - if you needed to know that as a nation, we're still very interested in just what the Wii can do, to the point that a tech demo is the best selling 'game' for another week. There's a handful of PC gamers that struggled to keep the world at war and on top of a chart full of simulated people, while the Xbox 360 is dominated by sequels and the return of Dom and Marcus. The PS3 suffers under a second Chimera attack, but the PS2 and PSP are still racing around undercover. Finally, the DS would like to get away from it all, and escape - perhaps to Africa?

Here are the new charts, same as the old charts. Technically, this is the last chart for 2008, but it doesn't really hold m/any surprises. The DS charts in particular are swamped by games that you can only imagine are Christmas presents for the kids, and the Wii is topped by a cheaper title that people are picking up as something to go with the console. The top 10 is a fair representation of what we like - console games dominate (Wii taking out six spots!), and there is a more casual tone to proceedings, with only two 'serious' games in the list.
Put simply - we are a nation of Wii gamers fixated on a game that is essentially a glorified tech demo! PC gamers were otherwise occupied, trekking through a world at war. The Xbox 360 fans were still hanging out with Marcus, Dom and the Locusts, and the PS3 was overrun by Chimera once again. Their PS2 brothers were rockin' out to the third generation of heroic guitarists, the DS was still being used as a tool for cranial exercise, and the PSP was once more speeding, undercover.

The end of the year is typically the time for roundups and recaps, summing up the year past - but sometimes, it takes a little while longer to compile all the information, bumping the news to the new year. This is the case with the official Xbox 360 Top 20 LIVE Games of 2008 list, which has just been announced.
We have here the list of both the the Original Xbox and Xbox 360 Top Live Titles (both lists based on unique users), as well as the Top Arcade Titles (based on full versions purchased). Not sure if there's any real surprises here (hello, Halo), but it is interesting to note the number of demos in the list that are not accompanied by the full game.

What will you remember 2008 for, in terms of gaming?
We asked some of the game admins and network staff to find out their thoughts, but here's a quick recap of the past 12 months, to refresh your memory.
Non-games dominated this year's charts, with Wii Fit rewarding gamers for standing still. As a country, we were still fans of the music game genre too, finally getting our hands on Rock Band, which seemed to have been pushed onto shelves by the release of Guitar Hero: World Tour a week later. Who knows, the full-band version may even have healed some hurt caused by the "interesting" yet awkward Guitar Hero: On Tour release for DS. There was a new Call of Duty to heed, a new Bond to meet, Marcus and Dom were back, and independent developers twisted our brains with Braid and our rhythm skills with Audiosurf. Red Alert was back, and we revisited the Midnight Club. We also saw the release of the "Three Fs" - Far Cry 2, Fable 2, and Fallout 3, meaning many gamers were a bit strapped for cash by the end of the year.
...and, who could forget? 2008 is the year we met Sackboy!

We also saw the release of the "Three Fs" - Far Cry 2, Fable 2, and Fallout 3, meaning many gamers were a bit strapped for cash by the end of the year.
...and, who could forget? 2008 is the year we met Sackboy!

Time for this week's charts - and it looks like people are pretty set in their ways, buying the same things for Christmas this week as they did last week. There's been a few slight changes, but overall, it's the same titles that we saw last time around.
To explain further - gamers are preparing themselves for the holiday season by getting in early with some motion-sensitive fitness equipment, while the PC fans are paying attention to duty's call, in a new world. The 360 is still revving their chainsaws (3 million-strong, we hear last week), and the PS3 still enjoys a second dose of resistance. The PS2 has been thrown to the ground and wrestled yet again, while the DS has headed to the Olympics with some familiar friends and the PSP remains speeding, undercover.

With Christmas rapidly approaching, The Warp Pipe is calling time for 2008. After 45 columns without a break this year, I’m clocking off a little early to read a few books, watch some movies, replay some of 2008’s best games and of course, fly to Queensland to spend Christmas with the family. The Warp Pipe will be back on the 18th of January with a few minor tweaks and a couple of bold predictions for 2009.
Speaking of bold proclamations, The Warp Pipe made a few just before the start of the second, third and final quarters of the year. I thought we’d use the final column of the year evaluating my ability to predict the quality of soon-to-be-released video games.

The Australian Weekly Video Game Charts have recovered pretty swiftly from last week's 70's singalong attack, with an playful motion-sensing favourite popping right back up into top spot. The PS2 is still languishing a few decades behind, but at least the rest of the charts are back to 'normal'.
Looking around, there's been a changing of the guard in the PC side of things, now hearing a Call of Duty (and no original best-selling MMO to be seen!). The Xbox 360 is still revving their chainsaws, and PS3 experiences yet another resistance. The DS gamers are still working on getting smarter by playing games, and the PSP feels the need - the need to go undercover. Ha.

Mostly, with these weekly charts, I am the bearer of good news. I bring you information that a great new game has topped the national sales, or that an underdog has made it to #1 despite the odds being stacked against them. This week, I'm afraid I can't do that.
...while I am pleased to see that a certain zombie-huntin' co-op title has made it to #6 and #7 for PC and Xbox 360 respectively, the PS2 game that picks up top honours this week almost makes me ashamed to be a gamer.
In other news - the PC charts are still dominated by a wrathful monarch, the Xbox 360 hears the distant rev of chainsaws and the PS3 is heeding the call of duty once again. While the Wii is again concerned with body image, the DS prefers to train their mental abilities, and the PSP gets in a bit of wrestlin'.

No real surprises in this week's charts, I'm afraid. Despite the sheer number of awesome titles being released, anybody who thought that we'd see anyone other than Arthas sitting at top spot was really deluding themselves. He did have some unexpected competition though, with a certain music game giving him a bit of a run for his money.
Obviously, PC games rule this week, from a frozen MMO throne. PS3 and Xbox 360 are both facing a world at war, the Wii is dancing to its own tune, the PS2 and its portable cousin are still wresting with this year's release, and the DS has resorted to cranial exercises once again.
(Incidentally - which platform do you think sold the most copies of the latest Guitar Hero? I think you'll be surprised...)

If you're one of the masses lining up to get your mitts on Call of Duty: World at War as soon as it launches tomorrow morning, make sure you're also one of the masses lining up to download the 1.1 patch for the game, which came out on Day 1 in the US.
It's a little over 300MB and doesn't really change all that much, but there is the amusing update that will see the game notifying players when a new patch is available. Just think, if that functionality was in the game from the start, we wouldn't need this post!
...if you want to know more about World at War, why not check out our exclusive interview / preview / video that we filmed while in Los Angeles.

Treyarch have something to prove with Call of Duty: World at War. They earned their stripes with Call of Duty 3, learned from their mistakes, and have moved on. This time around, they've taken their time, producing a game that takes the franchise to a new level, as well as two all-new locations, the Pacific Theater and the Eastern Front.
We recently popped into the studios for a chat with Noah Heller, senior producer at World at War, to take a look at the game and ask him a few questions about what it's all about. We even took along a video camera, to see what we could see.

For those of you eagerly awaiting Call of Duty: World at War on the PC, you may have been disappointed at news regarding the fact that the Xbox 360 beta is currently under way. There is no need to fret (because as we reported), the beta will be making its way to the PC soon. We've been tipped off by some of our readers regarding some changes to the PC multiplayer element of Call of Duty: World at War, which will offer a number of improvements over the multiplayer mechanics of Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare.
Amongst these, a more "console-centric" system will be introduced, enabling you to see what your friends are up to and join servers they're playing on more easily (a la Steam). A few other new features will also see various improvements in terms of multiplayer.

So here we are at the final instalment of Games On Net’s coverage of Activate Asia 2008. After four days in the land of the Kiwi, many games were played, much beer consumed and surprisingly few sheep spotted (only one! In our final article today, we’re going to take a look at the latest offerings from Sierra, with two new updates of some original Playstation classics, with Crash: Mind Over Mutant and The Legend of Spyro: Dawn of the Dragon.

The video game industry is often like a sieve. Developers pour timeless effort into a project, only to have nuggets of information lapped up by thirsty gamer tongues. While some may not describe a "leak" as eloquently, it appears that it is something that will remain throughout the industry. The latest of these appears to belong to the Treyarch developed Call of Duty: World at War.
Forum goer sllim has submitted some news regarding a number of rumours surrounding Call of Duty: World at War. The leak has allegedly unveiled a weapons list, a list of unlockable perks, and the minimum system requirements.

So the 2008 E3 Media and Business Summit has wrapped up. Bitter fanboys are sure to have run out of tears, at least temporarily, while tired journalists are no doubt catching up on some much needed sleep. I have no doubt that many of you have long lists of games you're now salivating over even more than before – better start putting those pennies aside. On the other hand, those of us on the reviewing side of things are currently wondering how on Earth we're going to manage to cover all of the fourth quarter's games without going insane.
This week, we'll reflect on the events that transpired during the three manufacturer press conferences and discuss our thoughts and any potential ramifications, and we'll also look at a few of the best games that were on show.

While Activision aren't technically part of this year's E3 Summit, they're still in LA, and they're still holding a press conference, and I'm feeling generous, so we'll give them some liveblogging attention as well. (Well, sort of liveblogging. As it's not part of E3, our feed has been delayed, but we'll just pretend it's live, shall we?)
Ignant has been in touch - he's in LA and was in the audience for this conference, apparently some of the stuff is pretty special. Here's hoping he sends us photos soon!
While we're waiting for the feed, why don't you have a bit of a think. Activision have revealed a few biggish titles recently, so what do you think we'll be seeing? I'm expecting to see a lot of Guitar Hero, a lot of CoD: World at War, probably some Spider-Man too. Who knows what else is in store?
