Section 8 scored by verteran video game composer Jason Graves
On the battlefield, music may well be the last thing on your mind, but when free falling through the beauty of the skies - admittedly, into a battlefield, but still - an appropriately majestic soundtrack is a must. Luckily for Section 8, the upcoming FPS about soldiers who jump out of planes, award-winning composer Jason Graves has been hard at work creating just that.

The Warp Pipe - 26/07/09
The video game industry has come far in the last thirty years, but we still can’t shake the perception that everything needs to be released in the fourth quarter of the year. It has gotten better, particularly in the last two years where heavy hitters like Grand Theft Auto IV, Resident Evil 5 and Super Smash Bros. Brawl were released in the first half of the year. Q4 2009 is still stacked with high profile titles, some of which will inevitably be overlooked in favour of Halo 3: ODST, Modern Warfare 2 and Assassin’s Creed 2.

This week, The Warp Pipe is going to shed a bit of light on titles which are deserving of your attention this year, but are at risk of being lost in the Q4 shuffle.

New Alpha Protocol trailer infiltrates
Not every earth-bound occupation allows your individual choices to affect the lives of so many. Unless, of course, you're a gamer who happens to enjoy role-playing games, and by chance, have chosen to play a spy, as in Obsidian Entertainment's upcoming Alpha Protocol.

The game promises a great deal of freedom, with the ability to totally customise your character, and even choose your handler during a mission, which can affect the outcome of individual missions, and the game at large, as demonstrated in this briefing. Well, I lie - it's not really briefing, but if we're going to role-play, we can't just call it a tutorial trailer, right?

Alpha Protocol - new developer diary released
Role playing games with a contemporary setting are few and far between. While there seems to be no end to the hordes of third person shooters and first person shooters set in the real world, the RPG, for some reason - doesn't often leave its comfortable fantasy settings for a journey into the real world. Enter Obsidian Entertainment and their latest title, Aplha Protocol.

Intertwining RPG mechanics with a modern-day Spy, and a plot surrounding terrorists, the fate of the world and other typical RPG-fare, Alpha Protocol's finer details are discussed in depth in this new developer diary. Featuring the commentary of many of the development team who are currently working on the game, an insight is given to the far-reaching consequences of a player's actions, along with a reveal of the game's interface.

As can also be expected, new gameplay footage is also on offer in the video.

Alpha Protocol: first trailer from Obsidian espionage RPG
Obsidian Entertainment are pretty popular around here, and on the strength of (for example) the much-loved Neverwinter Nights 2, the news that they're putting together a new RPG title has caused quite a few ears to prick up. Alpha Protocol is a fair step away from what you might be expecting, with swords-and-sorcery replaced with modern day espionage action! It may not be a common RPG theme, but if plot is what you like in your games, spy thrillers certainly provide excellent fodder, as this stylish new trailer demonstrates.
