As the year starts to kick off, we have seen some great trailers and demos already out and making us want more. 2009 is shaping up to be a big year in gaming and with the Comic Con just finishing in New York, we have some new trailers showing off some up and coming games that you may have not heard of.
We start this week going sky high. We check out an super alliance that's breaking and see a war against the covenant in a new way. We learn to see in the dark that just might save us from being splattered in a house. It is a mad world we live in, so relax and check out this weeks trailers.

What will you remember 2008 for, in terms of gaming?
We asked some of the game admins and network staff to find out their thoughts, but here's a quick recap of the past 12 months, to refresh your memory.
Non-games dominated this year's charts, with Wii Fit rewarding gamers for standing still. As a country, we were still fans of the music game genre too, finally getting our hands on Rock Band, which seemed to have been pushed onto shelves by the release of Guitar Hero: World Tour a week later. Who knows, the full-band version may even have healed some hurt caused by the "interesting" yet awkward Guitar Hero: On Tour release for DS. There was a new Call of Duty to heed, a new Bond to meet, Marcus and Dom were back, and independent developers twisted our brains with Braid and our rhythm skills with Audiosurf. Red Alert was back, and we revisited the Midnight Club. We also saw the release of the "Three Fs" - Far Cry 2, Fable 2, and Fallout 3, meaning many gamers were a bit strapped for cash by the end of the year.
...and, who could forget? 2008 is the year we met Sackboy!

As we watch 2008 log off and 2009 jump into gear, we are looking back at some of our highlights for all the fantastic games released this year. It wasn't easy and with so many big titles and great games coming out there was much debate in the Newsbot den as to what game should take out the Games on Net 2008 Awards.
What will be labelled the top games in the consoles? Which was our favourite PC hit? What other awards do we have to give out? All will be explained inside as we round up the year by letting you guys know what we did and didn't like.

With Christmas rapidly approaching, The Warp Pipe is calling time for 2008. After 45 columns without a break this year, I’m clocking off a little early to read a few books, watch some movies, replay some of 2008’s best games and of course, fly to Queensland to spend Christmas with the family. The Warp Pipe will be back on the 18th of January with a few minor tweaks and a couple of bold predictions for 2009.
Speaking of bold proclamations, The Warp Pipe made a few just before the start of the second, third and final quarters of the year. I thought we’d use the final column of the year evaluating my ability to predict the quality of soon-to-be-released video games.

With the release of Golden Axe: Beast Rider fast approaching, Sega and Secret Level have released yet another making oftrailer for the title. The fourth video in the series explores the voice acting and audio of the game, along with some developer commentary regarding plot, animations and a few other things.
There is some gameplay footage included, and it really looks as though Golden Axe: Beast Rider will be a worthy successor to the arcade classic. We've got the new trailer on the mirror, along with a bunch of other content.

Nostalgia seems to turn up in rushes. We move on from the original and suddenly, x many years later, everywhere you look it's being referenced. In recent weeks I've been amazed by how often the old Sega Mega Drive has cropped up in movies, conversation, and even here on the site, as this week's Warp Pipe was half of a two-week musing on the console's history, fueled by its twentieth anniversary. Not to mention remakes of classic Mega Drive titles.
And now, to make it seem almost as if all the constant niggling reminders were just some incredibly clever and pervasive advertising campaign, comes the announcement of the release of a new Mega Drive handheld console, the Blaze Sega Mega Drive Handheld.

Developer diaries are such an excellent hype medium that I feel like weeping every time I see a great looking game undersold by a short, boring, repetitive trailer. Luckily, the second installment of the Golden Axe: Beast Rider developer diaries avoids these traps and delivers the interest-grabbing goods.
Clocking in at just under ten minutes, you might wanna grab the popcorn while you take in a mix of gameplay footage and discussion, character models and animation under development, and commentary from the Secret Level team as well as Makoto Uchida, the Sega China president credited as being responsible for the original classic and involved in the upcoming port.

Details have been fairly sketchy on Sega Entertainment's upcoming revival of the highly treasured Golden Axe. Developed by the folk over at Secret Level, Golden Axe Beast Rider sees the arcade legend hack and slash its way onto the PS3 and Xbox 360.
Today, we've got a brand new "Making of" trailer which explores the history behind the Golden Axe saga, including an interview with its creator, Makoto Uchida. The trailer is an insight into not only the history of the series, beginning in 1989, but also the newest iteration!

2008 has been a little different from the standard industry year, in that we’ve seen a lot of major titles released outside of the holiday shopping season. Mario Kart Wii, Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Grand Theft Auto IV and Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots were all released in the first half of the year. One would think that that might make for a less than stellar holiday line up, but the game publishers of the world (bar Nintendo) are inclined to prove otherwise.
Over the next two weeks (due to the sheer number of releases), The Warp Pipe will be boldly predicting the quality of new games in the next quarter.
