Coming Attractions - 16/09/09
This week’s Coming Attractions is brought to you by broken street dates and clearance sales. Many of the games marked for release tomorrow, like Colin McCrae DiRT 2, Need for Speed SHIFT and NHL 10 should already be available in stores now, unless your local game shill is one of those ones that plays by the book. There is also a few neat console ports hitting the PC this week, namely destructor-sim Red Faction Guerilla and Resident Evil 5.

From next week on, we’ll be bringing Coming Attractions to you on Mondays, mostly in an effort to avoid street date breaches messing up our hard work. Don’t forget that you can check out our full release schedule for any updates and changes.

The Warp Pipe - 28/06/09
Lately, the Warp Pipe has been looking to the past for its gaming fix, rather than getting wrapped up in the present or worrying about the future. Perhaps it’s as a result of a strict regimen of movie tie-ins and yearly sequels on the review plate, or something to kill the time between E3 and the holiday season – I don’t really care enough to sit around and think about it. Whatever the cause is, I have retro fever, and have it bad.

This week, we’re going to take a look at the three incarnations of Michael Jackson’s Moonwalker.

Activision may stop supporting Sony platforms in the future
The video game world can often be a place were backs are stabbed, deals are broken, and high profile titans often clash through press releases and school-yard styled exchanges of words. The latest of these places Activision against console manufacturer and electronics giant Sony, with Activision, the largest third party video game publisher in the world last week threatening that it may have to discontinue support for Sony platforms such as the PlayStation Portable and the PlayStation 3 for a myriad of factors, the most important of which is profitability and market penetration.

Among Activision's demands are a reduce in price for the PlayStation 3 console, along with reduced expense and royalties for publishing games on the console, with the company paying some US$500 million to Sony in royalties alone last year. This would allow Activision to have a much higher profit margin on PlayStation 3 games than they currently do.

Logitech reveal "Black Edition" of Wireless Guitar Controller for PS3
Those who are fond of the Guitar Hero series often have many things to say about the plastic peripherals that are packaged with the games. These things usually aren't all that good, and the ears of Logitech have picked this up, today announcing the Black Edition of its Wireless Guitar Controller that is compatible with the PlayStation 3 and 2 platforms.

The controller isn't a simple replacement. It is for "gamers who want to play like a rock star", and sports a wooden neck, a rosewood fret board, and metal frets, much like you'd expect on a decent real guitar.

Activision Blizzard will break quarterly earning projections
Activision Blizzard laughs in the face of the economic crisis and bulldoze their expectations for this quarter. So many hundreds of millions that bag space is becoming an issue. CEO Robert Kotick took the time to announce today that the company will outdo its US $860 million net revenue target for the quarter.

No new estimates were given, but the shattered expectations stem from the phenomenal software sales from the reigning titans: World of Warcraft, Call of Duty, and the numerous Guitar Hero iterations. Kotick took the spotlight to stop stuffing his pockets with monies and pitch Activizzard's upcoming lineup.

The result: Guitar Hero: Greatest Hits, I kid you not.

2008 - a year in review
What will you remember 2008 for, in terms of gaming?

We asked some of the game admins and network staff to find out their thoughts, but here's a quick recap of the past 12 months, to refresh your memory.

Non-games dominated this year's charts, with Wii Fit rewarding gamers for standing still. As a country, we were still fans of the music game genre too, finally getting our hands on Rock Band, which seemed to have been pushed onto shelves by the release of Guitar Hero: World Tour a week later. Who knows, the full-band version may even have healed some hurt caused by the "interesting" yet awkward Guitar Hero: On Tour release for DS. There was a new Call of Duty to heed, a new Bond to meet, Marcus and Dom were back, and independent developers twisted our brains with Braid and our rhythm skills with Audiosurf. Red Alert was back, and we revisited the Midnight Club. We also saw the release of the "Three Fs" - Far Cry 2, Fable 2, and Fallout 3, meaning many gamers were a bit strapped for cash by the end of the year.
...and, who could forget? 2008 is the year we met Sackboy!

Most of my recent time has been spent wrestling a Metal Gear Solid 4 review, which you'll see on the site soon, and the new Alone in the Dark game, which has some promising concepts destroyed by wretched controls and a multitude of glitches.
