We’re getting towards the end of the Q1 rush, which usually results from video game publishers pushing games out to improve their end of financial year results. Headlining this week is the latest handheld outing of the Grand Theft Auto series Chinatown Wars, the heavily edited and delayed Silent Hill Homecoming (for the PS3, anyway), and the celebration of WrestleManias past in WWE Legends of WrestleMania.

With Christmas rapidly approaching, The Warp Pipe is calling time for 2008. After 45 columns without a break this year, I’m clocking off a little early to read a few books, watch some movies, replay some of 2008’s best games and of course, fly to Queensland to spend Christmas with the family. The Warp Pipe will be back on the 18th of January with a few minor tweaks and a couple of bold predictions for 2009.
Speaking of bold proclamations, The Warp Pipe made a few just before the start of the second, third and final quarters of the year. I thought we’d use the final column of the year evaluating my ability to predict the quality of soon-to-be-released video games.

Just yesterday, Steven reported that Sony's PlayStation Home service may well be available "before the end of the year". Apparently, a little over 24 hours can make all the difference in these things, with the rumour blown out of the water in a slightly different way than we'd expected.
News tonight has landed on my desk that the PlayStation Home Beta will be available for all PS3 users with PlayStation Network connectivity - starting December 11th, 2008. The information came out of the UK, so I wouldn't expect this one until tomorrow evening, or even Friday morning.

2008 has been a little different from the standard industry year, in that we’ve seen a lot of major titles released outside of the holiday shopping season. Mario Kart Wii, Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Grand Theft Auto IV and Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots were all released in the first half of the year. One would think that that might make for a less than stellar holiday line up, but the game publishers of the world (bar Nintendo) are inclined to prove otherwise.
Over the next two weeks (due to the sheer number of releases), The Warp Pipe will be boldly predicting the quality of new games in the next quarter.

Sony are firm in their belief that everything needs to be bigger to be better - and, as a result, have announced the new 80GB PlayStation 3, replacing the 40GB model.
As announced at this year's E3, the new model features all of the same functionality and features as the current 40GB model, but with twice the storage space - so you can store all the games, music, photos, movies and other entertainment content for the same price - RRP AU$699.
(Not only that, but you'll get a DUALSHOCK 3 Wireless Controller thrown in, too!)

While I know that you guys have been making a little bit of noise in our Playstation forums regarding the Playstation 3 2.40 firmware, we've finally received official word on a release date and a complete feature list.
Firstly - the good, the 2.40 firmware will be released tomorrow. Secondly - the bad, you'll have to wait until evening. The firmware update will add a bunch of new features and enhancements which Playstation 3 owners have wanted for quite some time.
... And yes, you will have access to an in game XMB.

Here is some gaming news which, I am sure, will titillate PS3 owners no end. SOCOM is set to hit the PS3 in a new title, SOCOM Confrontation. Considering the PS3 has been lacking quality titles this is all good news. The game is set to deviate slightly from the first and focus primarily on multiplayer action. So, you'd better warm up your microphones and practice saying "A ... ten ... hun" for this tactical shooter is sure to be a huge success.
