It's not just Duke Nukem who has his day in court, Midway Games have also strolled into a Delaware courthouse, to sue Sumner Redstone and his National Amusements Inc. holding company, claiming that the publisher was "hurt" when Redstone last year sold his 87 percent stake for a mere $100,000.
The deal, which we hinted was perhaps a little shady, generated more than $700 million in tax losses for Mr. Redstone, in tern generating a "massive" tax refund for National Amusements Inc. According to an official committee of unsecured Midway creditors, this made things a little painful for Midway.

Street Fighter IV is just five days away, and it’s seen a lot more hype than any fighting game release in recent memory. Fifteen years ago, the fighting game was the most popular genre in the arcades and on home consoles, but over time, people started to lose interest. The latest versions of one-time best-sellers like Virtua Fighter and Tekken barely made a dent on the charts. Fighting games aren’t dead by any means, but their popularity is just a fraction of what it once was.
In this week’s edition of The Warp Pipe, we’ll look at a few factors that I believe lead to this decline in popularity of the fighting game genre.

With Christmas rapidly approaching, The Warp Pipe is calling time for 2008. After 45 columns without a break this year, I’m clocking off a little early to read a few books, watch some movies, replay some of 2008’s best games and of course, fly to Queensland to spend Christmas with the family. The Warp Pipe will be back on the 18th of January with a few minor tweaks and a couple of bold predictions for 2009.
Speaking of bold proclamations, The Warp Pipe made a few just before the start of the second, third and final quarters of the year. I thought we’d use the final column of the year evaluating my ability to predict the quality of soon-to-be-released video games.

2008 is beginning to wrap up; the last major releases of the year are on shelves, and the industry is preparing to take a breather. Normally, we’d have quiet time until February, but a quick look ahead suggests that the releases will be rolling out from mid-January. At this stage it looks like Capcom is going to rock the quarter after having held their big guns off from the holiday rush - Bionic Commando, Resident Evil 5 and Street Fighter IV are all set for release in the first ten weeks of the year.
This week the Warp Pipe will look at the downfall of Midway, and investigate how they can rebuild and move forward.

Recent times have seen mainstream media report almost every day on the "global financial crisis", which inevitably has effects on the gaming industry in an indirect way. Last month, Shari Redstone, Chairwoman of Midway Games resigned from her position in what was speculated to be the sale of the Redstone family's significant stake in the company.
Today, it has been reported by the Wall Street Journal that Sumner Redstone of National Amusements Inc. has sold the the majority stake in the company for the bargain basement price of US$100,000, along with an estimated debt of US$70 million. The 87% stake in Midway was snapped up by a private investor, Mark Thomas.

Everybody knows that guy from Mortal Kombat, right? The one who urges you to "Finish Him!" as you approach victory? ...what if you could get him to say something else?
Maxim magazine recently spent some time with the man himself - Hernan Sanchez (a 10-year veteran of video game voice acting), as part of Midway's promotions of the newest title in the series, Mortal Kombat vs DC Universe. And - honestly - who can forgive them for handing the guy a microphone and asking him to pronounce a few different catch-phrases? You all wanted to hear him suggest that "Maybe You Should Play Something Else", right? What about "Tickle Him!"? ...well, now you can, with this new soundboard.

The ABC's gaming show Good Game is shown on Monday nights @ 9pm on ABC2 with a repeat on ABC1 on Friday nights after triple j TV. As if that wasn't enough, there's always the downloadable vodcast on the website, too!
With only 27 minutes we've tried to tackle the avalanche of games as best we can... and that's as well as our interview with Michael Atkinson, talking about an R18+ rating for Australia.

With some big name games released this week (and still more to come), most of you are probably off in various worlds with Lich Kings, Sack people and zombies. But if your are one of the ones still waiting around for their game of choice to be released, check out some of the new trailers we got this week.
This week we head to Persia to learn how to climb walls and Skate It. We look at some Chronicles and Commandos. The Last Remnant is out in force and causing two different universes to collide in Kombat.

While this week has been an interesting and yet sad one with a certain Sackboy missing his flight, we still managed to get a couple of the best looking trailers I have seen, possible all year! I was in complete surprise at what some of the companies have achieved after looking at a couple of this weeks ones.
This week we look at a Legendary trailer and check back in to see what you can make in Far Africa. We join up to the midnight club and get a need for speed. We look at the fight between a game and a comic and have a look at one red hot funny alert from a presidential campaign.

The Holiday flood begins this Thursday with the release of an ungodly amount of games, including Brothers in Arms: Hell’s Highway, Crysis Warhead and Wipeout HD, and doesn’t stop until the week before Christmas. To save you all a bit of time, I like to run through the release list at the start of a given quarter, and make sweeping generalisations as to the quality of upcoming games.
Last week’s Warp Pipe covered the games of October, so this week we’re looking at November’s big hitters, including Gears of War 2, Left 4 Dead and Mirror’s Edge.

As we look forward beyond that massive event, we are getting some exciting trailers coming in from Comic-Con. The comic book geek inside of me was out in force this week, so expect a few comic heroes to pop up in trailers this week.
As for the rest? Well even with no master in sight, these wars still rage on. Is it a battle for one's soul? or for a whole universe? Either way the fight isn't over as it extends into the shadows. While there is some heroes sporting 70s hair others just rely on the powers of the gods to win their fights.

With E3 starting up one game on my hit list to find out more of was Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe. Combing the two worlds into one fighting game and forcing friends against foes, heroes against heroes, evil versus evil; this game is bringing a new twist on an old genre with some familiar faces.
We just got in a fact sheet with some more details about the game as well as a brand new video. With the only confirmed characters as Sub-Zero, Scorpion, Superman and Batman, this new trailer shows off some more of your favourites in action as well as some of the new game modes.

It has been bitterly cold and wet in Melbourne this week, but fortunately I've been too busy to worry about freezing my butt off. We're all trying to clear our plates here before the E3 train hits us next week – a week of 2am starts for the home team, and a couple of days of madness for Ignant, who will be our man in the field at the show. I'm sure we'll have all sorts of exclusive information and kickass trailers (quota free for Internode users), so stay tuned for what should easily be the best local E3 coverage.
We're going to step away from the E3 hype for a bit, and take a look at the video game career of Batman, in celebration of this week's theatrical release of The Dark Knight.

A catastrophic force has seen two universes merging - causing inevitable conflict between the rulers. Kombat forces worlds to collide, friends to fight, and alliances can form between the most unlikely parties. In order to save the world they know, the heroes (and villains) of Mortal Kombat must pit their strengths against the combined universe of the DC Universe, in Mortal Kombat vs DC Universe.
Scorpion and Sub Zero vs Superman and Batman? Combining such massive universes is going to split the community - making some gamers very happy and others cry into their keyboards, but if you'd like to know more, we've got some early details, plus the first-look trailer.
