[GDC09] Telltale Games: A brief history with Dave Grossman
2004 saw the cancellation of LucasArts' point-and-click adventure title Sam & Max: Freelance Police, the planned sequel to the 1993 release Sam & Max Hit The Road. Gamers around the world were terribly upset at the news - and it seems some of the developers were as well, with a group of former LucasArts employees leaving the company in order to start their own. That new game company was Telltale Games, and in the five years since, they've carved quite the little niche for themselves in the games industry.

While recently at GDC in San Francisco, we caught up with Telltale's Design Director, industry veteran Dave Grossman (known for his work on The Secret of Monkey Island, Monkey Island 2: LeChuck's Revenge, Day of the Tentacle and others), to find out more about Telltale, what they've been up to, and what their plans are, now that they are five.

The Warp Pipe - 14/12/08
With Christmas rapidly approaching, The Warp Pipe is calling time for 2008. After 45 columns without a break this year, I’m clocking off a little early to read a few books, watch some movies, replay some of 2008’s best games and of course, fly to Queensland to spend Christmas with the family. The Warp Pipe will be back on the 18th of January with a few minor tweaks and a couple of bold predictions for 2009.

Speaking of bold proclamations, The Warp Pipe made a few just before the start of the second, third and final quarters of the year. I thought we’d use the final column of the year evaluating my ability to predict the quality of soon-to-be-released video games.

The Warp Pipe - 06/07/08
Mid-year sales tend to be pretty awful, but one particular Australian retailer was running out a lot of stock for around the $5 mark, mainly on the PC, PS2, DS and Xbox 360. Needless to say, this week, I came home a couple of hundred dollars poorer and weighed down by bags of games, yet could not find many of the titles I wanted due to the store having been raided by people buying up multiple copies of the one game to trade or sell on eBay. Such is life. I'm still trying to wrestle my way through Alone in the Dark on the Xbox 360, a game with some stunning ideas, but absolutely horrendous controls and far too many bugs and glitches.

This week, The Warp Pipe will look at the current Q3 release list, gauging the perceived level of hype and giving a brief impression as to the quality of each game.

Strong Bad's Cool Game for Attractive People - First-look gameplay video
The Australian launch of Nintendo's WiiWare service is looming (...although we still don't have a set date yet), and it promises to bring some pretty spiffy little titles along with it. One of these titles is, of course, the ultra-special Strong Bad's Cool Game for Attractive People (which we like to call SBCG4AP) - and if you'd like to know a bit more, we've been slipped some new details - and a brand new trailer, for the first episode, Homestar Ruiner (no, that's not a typo).

If you don't have a Wii, or would like to keep your point-and-click cartoon games "where they belong", we're assured that the series will be arriving on PC as well, don't fret.

Strong Bad's Cool Game for Attractive People - coming soon to WiiWare
Who is the coolest person ever? Why, Strong Bad, of course! ...and he's about to get even cooler, heading to the Wii, in a new series of episodic games from Telltale. Strong Bad's Cool Game for Attractive People is designed in partnership with Videlectrix, and will be based on the online animation, which has been going on over at Homestarrunner.com since way back in 2004.

This will be the very first episodic series developed for connected consoles, and SBCG4AP (that's the official abbreviation) has been designed specifically for WiiWare, using WiiConnect24 features and easy-to-use controls. A new "actionsode" will be released each month, just like Telltale's successful Sam & Max series, and we have the first teaser video and some screens, to tempt you.
