Brütal Legend - a story in motion
When Tim Schafer and his team at Double Fine Productions aren't working on spelling lists for Brütal Legend, they seem to be working on trailers. One such trailer is the recently released, easily explained and named Story Trailer.

With epic narration, some gameplay footage, and previously unseen in-game environments, the trailer reveals, as its name implies, some tasty morsels of information regarding the story of the game and the best heavy metal roadie in the world, Eddie Riggs.

The Warp Pipe - 12/04/09
Today is Easter Sunday – a religious occasion for some, a celebration of new life for others, but almost universally celebrated with the gorging of chocolate. A common fixture of Easter Sunday for many children is the Easter Egg Hunt, a concept which stretches over into the world of video games, where instead of chocolatey goodness, game developers hide little secrets, amusing anecdotes and references to past products.

This week, The Warp Pipe will look at a couple of our favourite video game Easter Eggs.

Brütal Legend - new screenshots and concept art released
The pearly gates of a mythical world, oppressed, and untouched by the glory of heavy metal await in Brütal Legend, a third person action adventure game from Double Fine Productions. Development on the title is led by the fearless Tim Schafer, which sees players assume the role of Eddie Riggs, a heavy metal roadie voiced by Jack Black who finds himself transported to a "mythical world dripped in Rock and Roll folklore", where "great Metal titans once ruled and power chords rang from the countryside".

A bunch of new screenshots and concept art from the title have been released, which shows off the game's unique visual style and offers the first glimpse at Eddie Riggs in his V8.

[GDC09] Host Master and the Conquest of Humour - play as Tim Schafer
Creative overlord and founder of Double Fine Productions, the charismatic and fearless Tim Schafer is due to host the Games Developers Choice Awards in San Francisco. To celebrate the occasion, he's put two creative monkeys from the studio at work - resulting in a new flash adventure mini game available on the Double Fine Productions website.

Entitled Host Master and the Conquest of Humour, players are placed into the shaky boots of the video-game industry legend, who must search his dressing room in search of jokes. Brutal Legend - first look screenshots released
Electronic Arts have released a series of new screenshots from Tim Schafer's latest brainchild, the heavy-metal inspired Brutal Legend. Developed by Double Fine Productions, the same guys behind Psychonauts, the new production places gamers into the shoes of heavy-metal roadie Eddie Riggs.

Voiced by Jack Black, Riggs is tasked with creating a "hellacious army" to move an uncivilised, ancient world into a new "Age of Metal", free from oppression and slavery. The new screenshots display Riggs, and his mighty axe (both of the guitar and tree-cutting variety), along with being the first actual screenshots we've seen from the title.

The Warp Pipe - 18/01/09
After a couple of weeks of rest, The Warp Pipe is back with renewed vigour. We’ll be shuffling things around a bit this year to find the best fit; you’ll notice that the column will be a little shorter and perhaps less retrospective than it has been, but the point here is to both inform and entertain, and I hope to be doing a lot of that in the next 12 months.

To kick things off this year, I’ll be putting on my fortune teller’s hat and making predictions about what will happen in the video game industry in 2009.

Brutal Legend, and Tim Schafer find a new publishing home with EA
During the creation of the now giant Activision Blizzard, a number of developers and employees were shown the proverbial door - with many titles and studios placed in uncertain lands. The game will delve into mythology and a land of legend. Following heavy metal roadie Eddie Riggs, the game will see players commence the construction of an army of rockers in the Spring of 2009.

Grim Fandango - Tim Schafer reveals design documents
Grim Fandango was an adventure game released by LucasArts back in the day (1998 to be precise). While it gained critical acclaim, gamers of the time appeared to not quite be ready for this film noir-esque trip to the Land of the Dead, and the title didn't do so well in shops. In fact, the poor sales of the game contributed to the publisher closing their adventure game development, which in turn lead to the dismal decline of the once-popular genre.

However, the game did achieve a certain level of cult success, and the game's writer - Tim Schafer recently suffered a fit of nostalgia, digging through some old boxes to uncover the Puzzle Design Document for Grim Fandango, which we can share with you today.

The Warp Pipe - 28/09/08
From beneath a pile of games, I have briefly emerged to write this week’s column. Let’s just accept the fact that the video game industry is never going to learn how to manage a release schedule. It’s getting silly now – most of the big titles are hitting on the same day! The season has just started, and I’m already overwhelmed, but I wouldn’t have it any other way. Enjoy it while it lasts, because it looks like there will be a drought between the end of November and March.

This week, The Warp Pipe travels into the trivia vault again for another round of random video game facts.

Brütal Legend - A look back at the Age of Metal
It's official. The crew of metal historians over at Double Fine Productions have been burning the midnight oil and are now proud to announce, with some help from Sierra Entertainment, the discovery and initial findings of Brütal Legend, including the brand new teaser trailer.

Reconstructing events that took place eons ago, the two groups are hoping to allow future generations to experience - and pay respect to - the blood, sweat and chrome needed to ensure metal prevailed.

...and sshhhhh - they've got actor Jack Black along for the ride!
