Braid coming to PSN
Fiiiiiinally. It seems like for the last year it's been impossible to have a chat about indie or artistic games without half the company bringing up Jonathan Blow's Braid, which won a gazillion awards and is everyone's favourite post-modern platform puzzler.

Now you too can get in on the conversational action, with the imminent release of the time-manipulating adventure on the PlayStation Network.

Xbox Live Arcade celebrates The Arcade Winter (again!)
This time last year, when we were suffering through the dreary mid-winter (in the Southern Hemisphere, at least), Xbox came to our rescue with a little celebration they like to call The Arcade Winter. The original collection was the first time we got to meet Jonathan Blow's Braid, which went on to become one of the top ten Xbox 360 titles of last year - beating out retail blockbusters and plenty of big name titles!

Will this year feature a similar superstar?
Kicking off on July 23rd, we'll get one new game each week, with Xbox promising something for everyone, with titles ranging from the "fresh and ridiculously funny" Splosion Man, newly-remade Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Turtles in Time Re-Shelled... and of course, the eagerly-anticipated Shadow Complex.

Get tangled up in our Braid demo
I don't think I'm the only one unable to shift from my desk after a major scoffing session of Easter choccies and hot cross buns. The wind is whistling through the games press machine as developers, publishers and even marketing reps take a well-earned rest. Not me though; I'm determined that on this last day of public holiday goodness, you will have something to do until the over-eating wears off and you can safely go outdoors again. Number None, Inc. are equally concerned for your welfare, and have sent along a nice little demo for their Xbox LIVE smash hit Braid to keep you amused while your blood sugar settles.

Coming Attractions - 08/04/2009
Easter’s coming up this weekend, but it doesn’t look like the video game publishers of Australia are in a rush to release anything new for the extra long weekend. The Godfather II, Company of Heroes: Tales of Valor and Puzzle Quest: Galactrix should be able to hold the interest of anyone looking for something new this week, but the rest of us can look forward to spending time with a few of the recently released big hitters like Resident Evil 5 and Street Fighter 4

Don’t forget to check out the full release schedule for the latest changes and information on upcoming games.

2nd Annual Xbox LIVE Arcade Awards
Not too long ago we checked out the top 20 Xbox LIVE games of 2008. As fascinating as the knowledge of best-sellers and most-playeds over a whole year is, though, perhaps an even better indication of a game's popularity is the Annual Xbox LIVE Arcade Awards, now in its second year, in which Xbox LIVE users vote on their favourite LIVE Arcade titles in a number of categories. Or, you know - their favourites in the few months leading up to the awards! Well, let's take a look at the winners anyway. Warning: plenty of Castle Crashers and Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix ahead!

[GDC09] Down and Dirty with the Indie Games Rant
Well, we're here at GDC 09 in sunny San Francisco (sunny but cold!), and while things may have been overshadowed by the Big Name Announcements, earlier this week I spent a productive morning lurking around at the back of some sessions that are part of the Independent Gaming Festival arm of the Conference.

While everything here is interesting to the right sort of person, there was one session that had a little something for everybody. (Well, everybody interested in Indie Games, which is everybody, right?) It was the Indie Games Rant. Over the course of an hour, twelve independent game developers got up and ranted about something - anything - to do with independent gaming. The results were as varied as the developers, covering topics as varied as "Games as Art" to auteur theory, humour in games, ethics of game development, the benefits of making a demo, and even one gentleman who decided to see if he could write a game in five minutes.

Finland is Trine to conquer physics-based puzzlers
It might be quite a few years into the latest consoles' life spans, but lately it seems like their respective digital distribution networks are starting to fulfil some of the promise that captivated gamers' imaginations early on, with a slew of innovative, beautiful, and above all thrifty releases filling the empty spaces between major disc releases. One upcoming title that's giving off a glimmer of this magic is Trine, a physics-based platformer-slash-puzzler hailing from Finland.

[GDC09] Game Developers' Choice Awards - The Winners
Steven recently told us about the Tim Schafer flash game, where you play as Schafer himself, getting ready to host the Game Developers' Choice Awards. While this is a pretty enjoyable little thing in the privacy of your own home, it gets a bit weird when it's splashed up on a big screen at the actual awards ceremony, which is about to be hosted by none other than Tim Schafer.

Earlier this evening, as part of GDC 09, the second half of awards night kicked off in style, with a joke about organ harvesting. While this may have been the first surprise of the evening, it wasn't the last, with fan favourite Braid nominated for a variety of prizes, but then watching LittleBigPlanet scoop the pool.

Xbox 360: The Top 20 LIVE Games of 2008
The end of the year is typically the time for roundups and recaps, summing up the year past - but sometimes, it takes a little while longer to compile all the information, bumping the news to the new year. This is the case with the official Xbox 360 Top 20 LIVE Games of 2008 list, which has just been announced.

We have here the list of both the the Original Xbox and Xbox 360 Top Live Titles (both lists based on unique users), as well as the Top Arcade Titles (based on full versions purchased). Not sure if there's any real surprises here (hello, Halo), but it is interesting to note the number of demos in the list that are not accompanied by the full game.

2008 - a year in review
What will you remember 2008 for, in terms of gaming?

We asked some of the game admins and network staff to find out their thoughts, but here's a quick recap of the past 12 months, to refresh your memory.

Non-games dominated this year's charts, with Wii Fit rewarding gamers for standing still. As a country, we were still fans of the music game genre too, finally getting our hands on Rock Band, which seemed to have been pushed onto shelves by the release of Guitar Hero: World Tour a week later. Who knows, the full-band version may even have healed some hurt caused by the "interesting" yet awkward Guitar Hero: On Tour release for DS. There was a new Call of Duty to heed, a new Bond to meet, Marcus and Dom were back, and independent developers twisted our brains with Braid and our rhythm skills with Audiosurf. Red Alert was back, and we revisited the Midnight Club. We also saw the release of the "Three Fs" - Far Cry 2, Fable 2, and Fallout 3, meaning many gamers were a bit strapped for cash by the end of the year.
...and, who could forget? 2008 is the year we met Sackboy!

Xbox Live Arcade celebrates The Arcade Winter
Looks like I'm not the only one who's noticed that it's really very very cold these days in most parts of the country. Xbox have piped up with an invitation to celebrate The Arcade Winter - offering "five fantastic arcade games" to keep you warm over the next five weeks.

It all kicks off tomorrow afternoon, with the highly-anticipated retro shooter Geometry Wars: Retro Evolved 2, and then progresses over the next month and a bit with games such as Braid, Bionic Commando: Rearmed, Galaga Legions and Castle Crashers.

If this doesn't keep you toasty, I don't know what will!

GDC08: Xbox Live Arcade Highlights for 2008
It's not all big-name titles and huge budgets that are set to rock the Xbox 360 this year. Microsoft also unveiled a collection of smaller titles that will be launched on Xbox Live Arcade this year.

Xbox Live Arcade is the premier digital distribution destination for high-def, original and classic games - with more than 116 titles to choose from, there's something for everyone. It's also a great place to find new and independent titles, as there are more than 25 indie studios creating the original titles that make up more than a quarter of the games library. Microsoft took the time to highlight a sample of the games launching on Xbox Live Arcade in the near future.
