Coming Attractions - 16/09/09
This week’s Coming Attractions is brought to you by broken street dates and clearance sales. Many of the games marked for release tomorrow, like Colin McCrae DiRT 2, Need for Speed SHIFT and NHL 10 should already be available in stores now, unless your local game shill is one of those ones that plays by the book. There is also a few neat console ports hitting the PC this week, namely destructor-sim Red Faction Guerilla and Resident Evil 5.

From next week on, we’ll be bringing Coming Attractions to you on Mondays, mostly in an effort to avoid street date breaches messing up our hard work. Don’t forget that you can check out our full release schedule for any updates and changes.

[BlizzCon 09] Games On Net chats about StarCraft II with Dustin Browder
Still at BlizzCon 2009, we got the opportunity to spend some time with the Lead Designer of StarCraft II, Dustin Browder. You might remember him from such Blizzard projects as the StarCraft II Battle Reports, where he is one of the announcers. Let me tell you, the man can talk.

The weekend didn't really hold too much in the way of big StarCraft II news, so we decided to get Dustin to talk us through some more details about the new Battle.net service which is due to launch with the game, "When it's done".

A Night in Fantasia 2009: Tickets Now Available!
Forgive the apparent oxymoron, but contemporary classical music has majorly benefited from the interest generated by film and game soundtracks, one of the few successful commercial outlets for an increasingly marginalised musical tradition. A case in point is the Sydney based Eminence symphony orchestra, whose tireless efforts to showcase some of the incredible art apparent in our favoured medium come to a head at the annual A Night in Fantasia concert.

Tickets are now on sale for the gaming high-culture event of the year, which this time will feature pieces from the Prince of Persia, Metal Gear Solid and Ace Combat series, the epic Shadow of the Colossus, C&C: Red Alert 3 and even Diablo III.

Command & Conquer 4 in development?
With EA's drive towards mainly new intellectual property at this year's E3 event, you'd be forgiven for forgetting that the publisher is sitting on one of the most loved strategy franchises of all time, Command & Conquer.

Today, rumours which have burst through the might gates of the Internet have revealed that a fourth title in the series, allegedly named Command & Conquer 4 is in development or pre-production, according to a survey that was circulated by a British market research company.

EA allow users to check authorisation limits and manage DRM
Digital Rights Management and SecuROM are like the wail of a siren to the ears of fed-up PC gamers. While Electronic Arts have been a key offender, releasing countless PC titles with restrictive install limits and online-authorisations - the company has today announced what may appear to some gamers as an April fools prank - but - it doesn't appear that it is.

The release of a de-authorisation tool, (which is available on EA's website) allows users to view which titles they have installed currently that utilise SecuROM DRM, and how many authorisations have been used. Most importantly, the tool (and subsequent web-based results) allow users to download game specific tools which de-authorise the title in question from the computer it is run on.

Welcome to Now Playing, where each week, Games On Net invites you to enter a specially crafted theatre filled with the most irresistibly interesting, marvellously magnificent, or downright dire trailers from recently released or upcoming games.

This week, we team up once more with some bad company, who force us to throw a spanner into a universal clock which sees us DESTINED to endure over-enthusiastic voice acting in space. We then come back down to Earth to deal with some sort of red alert regarding an uprising of sorts. Finally, our hectic schedule closes with charming, highly destructive meteor shower.

2008 - a year in review
What will you remember 2008 for, in terms of gaming?

We asked some of the game admins and network staff to find out their thoughts, but here's a quick recap of the past 12 months, to refresh your memory.

Non-games dominated this year's charts, with Wii Fit rewarding gamers for standing still. As a country, we were still fans of the music game genre too, finally getting our hands on Rock Band, which seemed to have been pushed onto shelves by the release of Guitar Hero: World Tour a week later. Who knows, the full-band version may even have healed some hurt caused by the "interesting" yet awkward Guitar Hero: On Tour release for DS. There was a new Call of Duty to heed, a new Bond to meet, Marcus and Dom were back, and independent developers twisted our brains with Braid and our rhythm skills with Audiosurf. Red Alert was back, and we revisited the Midnight Club. We also saw the release of the "Three Fs" - Far Cry 2, Fable 2, and Fallout 3, meaning many gamers were a bit strapped for cash by the end of the year.
...and, who could forget? 2008 is the year we met Sackboy!

Well, it seems that the people responsible for such things over at EA HQ have been made aware of the problem - and it looks like they might have fixed it! I'd like to introduce you all to the 1.06 patch, which is available in a multitude of languages, and replaces the beta version released last week.

The Warp Pipe - 14/12/08
With Christmas rapidly approaching, The Warp Pipe is calling time for 2008. After 45 columns without a break this year, I’m clocking off a little early to read a few books, watch some movies, replay some of 2008’s best games and of course, fly to Queensland to spend Christmas with the family. The Warp Pipe will be back on the 18th of January with a few minor tweaks and a couple of bold predictions for 2009.

Speaking of bold proclamations, The Warp Pipe made a few just before the start of the second, third and final quarters of the year. I thought we’d use the final column of the year evaluating my ability to predict the quality of soon-to-be-released video games.

Secondly, EA have also released the Worldbuilder 1.0 for the game, making it really easy for you to create your own maps for the game, and share them with your mates.

You can grab both these changes now, from our File Library, right now!

Australian Weekly Video Game Charts - Week Ending 09/11/08
It seems there were a few big games released in Australia a week or so ago (not counting the few big games that were released last week - they haven't made it onto this chart yet!). Interestingly enough, this next wave has bumped the older big games from their lofty purchases - it looks like the games have been anticipated enough that everybody has rushed out and bought them in the first week, rather than just hanging out and picking up a copy eventually. Interesting.

Anyway, this week, the charts echo with the roar of a second lot of chainsaws as they take over the Xbox 360. PC gamers are on their third crimson alert, the Wii fans are seeing just what their controllers can do after a bit of a play, and the PS3 has taken a trip to a planet that is small, but large. Meanwhile, the DS is still testing their eyes - and both the PS2 and its portable cousin have taken on the latest in wrestling matches.

Red Alert 3 has users guessing game keys
In among all the other games launched recently, EA have quietly released their latest in the Command & Conquer universe - the eagerly-anticipated Red Alert 3. But alas, all has not run smooth in the land of the Soviets, the Rising Sun and the Allies. It seems that the publishers may need to invest in a new printer.

We're hearing reports that a "significant quantity" of Red Alert 3 manuals have been released to customers missing a digit from the 20 character code required to start the game.

The official solution from the guys behind the scenes - try guessing the last character, "[y]ou should eventually get the right combination."

Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3 - Meet Tanya: the 'feminine' warrior
The Command & Conquer series has been renowned for its use of real time cut scenes as a method of storytelling throughout. Whilst these can often be quite poor when considered in a cinematic or theatrical context, their production values are generally high and do offer an amusing distraction between missions.

Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3 appears to be no exception, with a number of live-action scenes to be incorporated. A new trailer has been released, which introduces us to the freshly-recast Tanya, played by former Playboy model, now actress and writer Jenny McCarthy.

One would think that that might make for a less than stellar holiday line up, but the game publishers of the world (bar Nintendo) are inclined to prove otherwise.

Most of my recent time has been spent wrestling a Metal Gear Solid 4 review, which you'll see on the site soon, and the new Alone in the Dark game, which has some promising concepts destroyed by wretched controls and a multitude of glitches.
