Sony Computer Entertainment Europe has announced that Wipeout HD, the PlayStation 3 version of the anti-gravity racing classic, will be released on Blu-Ray disc. Previously only available as a download, this tripped-out fusion of racing and shooting gameplay will soon be accessible to PS3 owners who are not connected to the internet, along with those who fear the volatile nature of volatile media.

Here's how it normally works. A developer or publisher puts out a press release saying something along the lines of "we are going to make a game, hurrah for us!" with maybe a tiny piece of concept art. Later on we get a fact sheet and some more concept art. After a few name changes just to annoy journalists, and maybe a change of publisher, one screenshot surfaces, followed by silence for several months - and then suddenly loads of lovely updates start pouring in and everyone gets excited. Blooper Team, whoever they are, don't think much of this way of doing things, and have sent in a trailer and some screenshots for their futuristic racing title Death Road before bothering to tell anybody anything about it.

LittleBigPlanet is no stranger to downloadable content. However, this week we were supposed to see a new batch headed our way. Unfortunately they haven't been able to bring us what they had planned.
But to cheer us up, they have announced some of what can be expected to be seen in the coming weeks and well... it is interesting! From Chinese New Years costumes to God of War stickers to... err.. WipEout costumes?! I can't wait to see some levels using those!

Some time ago, we reported that WipEout HD was delayed due to epilepsy concerns. These allegations resulted in a statement being released, stating that the game failed "the epilepsy tests so much that it has to be re-engineered". Whether or not this was true, those who've got their hands on WipEout HD have been confronted with a lengthy epilepsy warning before being able to play.
While epilepsy is no laughing matter, the screen based method of warning users is one that is becoming more common - with manuals often disregarded. In the case of WipEout HD and its digital distribution through the Playstation store, it is a necessary addition, but it has for some reason sent other gaming news outlets into a fit. (Why, hello there, Mr. Pun!)

The Holiday flood begins this Thursday with the release of an ungodly amount of games, including Brothers in Arms: Hell’s Highway, Crysis Warhead and Wipeout HD, and doesn’t stop until the week before Christmas. To save you all a bit of time, I like to run through the release list at the start of a given quarter, and make sweeping generalisations as to the quality of upcoming games.
Last week’s Warp Pipe covered the games of October, so this week we’re looking at November’s big hitters, including Gears of War 2, Left 4 Dead and Mirror’s Edge.

Virtually all video games these days come with a warning message explaining that the flashing lights may trigger a seizure or blackout in those people who have a sensitivity. Even before they get this label, the games are rigorously tested to ensure they meet certain standards, to try and avoid causing people to suffer. While we don't normally hear about it, and the Health and Safety Precautions booklet is often thrown out when the game is unboxed, the warning is something that all game manufacturers must keep in mind.
I'd imagine that Sony will be paying a little more attention to the regulations as their long-awaited PSN release of WipEout has just been delayed - the game failed its recent epilepsy tests, and now requires re-engineering.

So the 2008 E3 Media and Business Summit has wrapped up. Bitter fanboys are sure to have run out of tears, at least temporarily, while tired journalists are no doubt catching up on some much needed sleep. I have no doubt that many of you have long lists of games you're now salivating over even more than before – better start putting those pennies aside. On the other hand, those of us on the reviewing side of things are currently wondering how on Earth we're going to manage to cover all of the fourth quarter's games without going insane.
This week, we'll reflect on the events that transpired during the three manufacturer press conferences and discuss our thoughts and any potential ramifications, and we'll also look at a few of the best games that were on show.

Mid-year sales tend to be pretty awful, but one particular Australian retailer was running out a lot of stock for around the $5 mark, mainly on the PC, PS2, DS and Xbox 360. Needless to say, this week, I came home a couple of hundred dollars poorer and weighed down by bags of games, yet could not find many of the titles I wanted due to the store having been raided by people buying up multiple copies of the one game to trade or sell on eBay. Such is life. I'm still trying to wrestle my way through Alone in the Dark on the Xbox 360, a game with some stunning ideas, but absolutely horrendous controls and far too many bugs and glitches.
This week, The Warp Pipe will look at the current Q3 release list, gauging the perceived level of hype and giving a brief impression as to the quality of each game.

Some companies (or probably most) would use their advertising budget to put a message, billboard, poster etc. in to games to put out a message of their latest product. For an example you'll find advertisements in the FPS game Counter-Strike, and there are billboards of the movie The Bourne Ultimatum in the game Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter 2. However, other companies like to spend it on developing a short mini game to promote the product.
