We're into the big release season now, but the industry seems to have decided to skip this week. That is unless you like basketball or enhanced ports, in which case you'll probably want to check out NBA 2K10 and Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2. If you're of a more creative mind, take a look at EA's two Spore Hero spinoffs and Drawn to Life: The Next Chapter, which are both hitting the Wii and DS.
Don't forget to check out the full release schedule for the latest changes and information on upcoming games.

With Christmas rapidly approaching, The Warp Pipe is calling time for 2008. After 45 columns without a break this year, I’m clocking off a little early to read a few books, watch some movies, replay some of 2008’s best games and of course, fly to Queensland to spend Christmas with the family. The Warp Pipe will be back on the 18th of January with a few minor tweaks and a couple of bold predictions for 2009.
Speaking of bold proclamations, The Warp Pipe made a few just before the start of the second, third and final quarters of the year. I thought we’d use the final column of the year evaluating my ability to predict the quality of soon-to-be-released video games.

Japanese video game publisher and developer Koei is set to merge with Tecmo, in a deal which is said to be worth 20 billion yen, or US$207 million. The deal has been initiated by Koei, and is expected to be completed by the end of April 2009.
The merger will see Tecmo shares exchanged for 0.9 shares in the new Tecmo Koei Holdings, set to form in April next year. Meanwhile, Koei shares will be exchanged for one full share in the new company. This move will see Koei shareholders control seventy-five per cent of the new company.

If you feel like there's something you've been missing, perhaps it's the ABC's gaming show Good Game! It made its return to our screens this week, for the continuation of its 4th season in the leadup to this year's holiday rush.
Forgot about the first episode? It's okay, the show's on again late tonight, so you can catch up before the regular screening on Monday night at 9pm (...or else you could visit the website where the episode is available to stream or download!).

This weekend marks the midway point of 2008, a milestone which has either come very slowly or out of nowhere, depending on your perception of time and space. I find myself in the latter group, stuck in a state of mind where it's March or April, largely out of desperation for some warm weather. Most of my recent time has been spent wrestling a Metal Gear Solid 4 review, which you'll see on the site soon, and the new Alone in the Dark game, which has some promising concepts destroyed by wretched controls and a multitude of glitches.
With the midway point reached, I thought I'd take the time this week to look back at the major events and releases of the first six months of the year.

The Australian buying public has gone topsy-turvy, with only two platforms having the same top-sellers as last week. The rest of the charts are an absolute mess, and looking at these lists today you will notice a few glaring omissions. GTA IV has slipped from the top spot on both consoles. There is no Halo 3. There is no World of Warcraft anywhere.
The games that are on top do make a sort of sense, with Australian gamers flocking in droves to get the Snake's latest solid adventures on PS3, the PC charts are still looking pretty simulated, Xbox 360 is all ninja-fied, PS2 and PSP gamers are still visiting a blocky archaeologist, and the DS is getting a bit sketch-happy.
This is the first time since I've been paying attention to the charts (every week for years, now!) that I can remember there not being any mention of the world's best-selling MMORPG in the top ten PC games. Is this a sign of the apocalypse?

With some massive trailers coming out in the last 24 hours, I thought this week would have been a challenge to try and pick out some of the better ones. However when I went over to the file library to see what else was there, it was still jam packed with great videos that now I have too many to choose from.
This week we check out the intro to a blobbing game and the second wave of resistance. We get welcomed into our new company as well as find out what its like to be a ninja the second time round. Then a new mmorpg title that is inline to be released this year. Also we look at what is crying in far away Africa.

The horrendous Melbourne weather did its best to prevent The Warp Pipe happening this week by knocking the power out multiple times and damn near sending a tree through my car's windshield. I've spent much of my week playing the despicable Two Worlds for the Xbox 360; it's the first console game I've played to date where I have had to enter in commands into an in-game console in order to turn off special effects like dynamic lighting and shadows in order to get the game to run at a playable speed. Maybe Microsoft should give the 360 a new slogan along the lines of "bringing the worst parts of PC gaming into your living room".
This week, we're going to run through the second quarter release schedule and make judgment calls on which ones are going to be worth your time. We'll also give our impressions of Contra 4, a game which mysteriously remains unreleased in Australia. Finally, we'll revisit the SiN anime movie.

In addition to the big announcement, there were also some other gems tucked away in Microsoft's keynote presentation at GDC this year. According to them, 2008 will be a landmark year for games and online entertainment on the Xbox 360 platform, featuring all sorts of highlights.
Peter Molyneux from Lionhead Studios showed off some exciting new features for the upcoming Fable 2, Tomonobu Itagaki demonstrated some game-sharing features from Ninja Gaiden II, and renowned Canadian developer Silicon Knights were showcased for their work on epic action title Too Human - all due out on Xbox 360 later this year!

Marcus Fenix is back, bringing Delta Squad with him for another battle against the nightmare Locust Horde...
...that's right, today at Game Developers Conference in San Francisco, Microsoft officially announced something we could all see coming - Gears of War 2. Rev your chainsaws, this one's headed straight to the Xbox 360 this November.
In a dramatic close to Microsoft's keynote address, held earlier this morning Adelaide time, Cliff Bleszinski from Epic Games (probably better known as Cliffy B) announced that the epic saga will continue as an Xbox 360 exclusive later this year, and promises to take high-def visuals to "a whole new level". The highly-anticipated sequel to the 2006 blockbuster, which has sold more than 4.5 million copies since release, will continue to illustrate humanity's struggle to live, while fighting the horrific Locust Horde.

One of the biggest whinges about Xbox 360 games these days is that while the game itself is fantastic, the achievements are ...somewhat lacking. They might have terrible artwork, a boring name, an uninspired description, be too simple (or too hard) or simply not give you all the points you feel you deserve.
Think you could do better than the devs? Well, now you can. Team Ninja has thrown open the doors of Ninja Gaiden 2, and they want to know what achievements you want to see ingame.
