ATI introduces the 40nm GPU with the HD4770
ATI have released to market (in the US, at least) an exciting innovation - the HD4770 which for all intents and purposes is a "lower end" video card, but the first to use a 40 nanometer production process, allowing for lower power usage, smaller chips, and most importantly, less heat production.

The HD 4770 features 512MB of GDDR5 memory, and is considered to be a direct competitor the 9800GT. The most exciting thing about the HD 4770 though, is its price point. In the United States, the card retails for a measly US$100, and for the cost, packs an impressive array of features and hardware into a dual slot solution that only uses 80 watts of power at full load.

Singularity enters manufacturing environment, destroying all
By now, most of you know the drill of the generic first person shooter. Take a game engine, add a few environments, a conflict of sorts, a few puzzles, and add a storyline pertaining to some sort of scientific anomaly. Then, give the idea to Raven Software, bake until golden, and then commence contracting renowned vault makers to store the inevitable truck load of riches that follows.

Then we come to Singularity, which while apparently being a first person shooter through and through, adds some new things to the fray. For one, there is a unique device that is given to the player which allows them to bend time in a number of ways, giving them the chance to exploit a number of unique gameplay mechanics. There is also the ability destroy cover (and their enemies) using the device, and should they choose to be (constructive) instead of destructive, they can also repair broken walkways and bridges.

Some of the potential uses of the fancy device are shown off in this new manufacturing trailer, which also gives us a first glimpse at one of the many environments that will feature in the full game.

nVidia and Sony get Physical
Sony and nVidia have signed an agreement which will enable registered PlayStation 3 developers free use and downloads of the nVidia PhysX SDK. The PhysX technology, which nVidia purchased from Aegia last year has moved (in nVidia hand's) from a hardware based API to a software API - which means that PhsyX code can run on any CPU for which it is compiled.

PhysX is built into a number of game engines (with the most notable being the Unreal 3 engine) - and offers developers "unprecedented creative control over character and object physical interactions by allowing them to author and preview physics effects in real time". With nVidia to provide support to PlayStation 3 developers with PhysX, it is anticipated that optimised physics routines will be placed in some forthcoming PlayStation 3 titles, allowing developers to dedicate more system resources to shaders, AI and other parts of the game engine.

Due to some technical issues in regards to Steam, it turns out that not many users were able to actually download and play Unreal Tournament 3 during the course of the free-weekend. This, in turn made Epic and Valve frustrated and angry, which has led to a two-fold announcement.

1. There will be a (new!) free weekend with the ability to pre-load the Unreal Tournament 3 content.

2. The bargain price of US$11.99 for UT3 on Steam will remain in place until the 22nd of March.

ATI DirectX 10.1 support wins market share and a (brighter) future
Recent times have seen a shift in the video card market. Whilst nVidia were for some time heralded as leaders in the market in terms of performance and image quality, the ball has recently shifted into ATI's possession with the HD4xxx series of graphics cards, which have managed to win 5% market share over previous reports.

This shift can be accredited to a number reasons. The first of these (in terms of gaming markets, at least) is the "bang for buck" factor - with with ATI HD4850 consistently outperforming nVidia cards in the same price range. Whilst good value represents one reason - the fact that ATI's latest range of cards offers complete support for DirectX 10.1 is another bonus which may be swaying consumers.

ATI may be cementing their market position even further today - with the announcement that several game development studios are using the DirectX 10.1 API, both in current and forthcoming titles.

...in a shock start to the weekend, Epic Games appear to have released the Unreal Tournament 3 demo a little bit earlier than anticipated.

It was just a couple of days ago we were saying it could be up to two weeks before the demo landed - but... looks like someone either was being overly cautious, or jumped the gun with this one, because we've got it here for you, right now.

It's around 750MB, contains four maps, and remember, this is "officially" a beta release, so no promises on quality. You know the drill.

Console Delays Continue - PS3 frags UT3's Release Date
The next game in the highly anticipated Unreal Tournament Franchise was seen running from a 2007 Release date Redeemer and into the Flak of First Quarter 2008 - another push back of the PS3 titles coming into the holiday season.

Midway said the PC release date is unaffected by the recent delays, but both the Xbox 360 and the PS3 versions are now due sometime in first quarter 08.

Unreal Tournament 3: Delayed?
I hate to be the bringer of bad news, but according to Epic's Mark Rein, Unreal Tournament III may not be arriving for its November release date - so you might be advised to look for something else for your Christmas stocking.

The woes of the Unreal 3 engine are obviously continuing, claiming another scalp. Just what will this delay mean for Sony's timed exclusivity deal? Is it based on time between releases, or is it based on the game being out before 2008?

Unreal Tournament 3 reveals some fairly unreal screens
I know how much you like screens. I know how much you like Unreal Tournament 3. It takes simple maths to work out that you'd probably like some screens for that particular title, right?

...you're in luck, I've got a bunch of new ones right here for you.
There's no accompanying note, just a handful of pretty pictures showing off what you can expect from the game when it's released later this year on PS3 and PC (and next year for Xbox 360).

Epic Games have already had their big announcement at E3 this year. They couldn't possibly have another one in the bag... right?

Darkness Demo Delay
The Darkness demo has been delayed but for a good reason. Starbreeze Studios, who were responsible for Chronicles of Riddick, have pulled staff from the development of the demo so that they can have the game released on time. They are hoping to have the demo to be available two weeks after the game has been submitted to Microsoft and Sony for certification.

Unreal Tournament 3: Has a new website ... no, really!
Like I was saying yesterday, I'd love it if we here at Internode were your only source of information. That said, I understand that - sometimes - you might like to visit other sites to learn more about your favourite games.

Well then. If your favourite game is Unreal Tournament 3, you could do worse than visiting the new www.unrealtournament3.com. Right now, it's got a video and a collection of screenshots, but it'll grow into something bigger and more exciting as release draws closer.

2K Games The Publisher Who Listens
Video game developers now days are so, "Blah, Blah". Every game is, "We'll release it when it is finished (aka Unreal Tournament 3 and Half Life 2)," or "We'll patch it when it's released (Nearly every game)," or "We are revising the release date from what we have scheduled (You pick a game which hasn't)." But 2K Games are not like that. 2K Games are the publisher who listen to gamers and aim to please.

GO3 2007: First Impressions
As a Games Journalist, part of my job is to attend games expos and conferences. As it happens, I'm in Perth right now attending the inaugural GO3 Electronic and Entertainment Expo and Conference. The expo is expected to be a standard affair with many companies showcasing their wares in attractive booths designed to draw the crowds. As GO3 spans across the days, I'll be covering the floor in much more detail on Sunday.

What you can expect from me today and tomorrow is a synopsis of the conferences being presented during the next two days.

Unreal Tournament 2007 is dead. Long live Unreal Tournament 3!
What do you think about games that include the year in the title? For some series, it's a sensible option - nothing really changes that much in, say, cricket, or football, or something else that has a fairly constant element to it.

Something that can (and does) change a lot, however, is - well, pretty much everything else. Case in point: Unreal Tournament 2007 3. That's right, it's scrapped the year, and instead is going with the much simpler "3". To celebrate, there's a brand spankin' new Movie Trailer - go check it out!
