What have the gaming public been buying this week via digital distribution platform Steam? Stuff that you can't get in Australia, apparently. Left 4 Dead 2 somehow managed to be the top seller, (so much for a boycott?), and it was followed by the first game documenting Valve's Zombie Apocalypse. Aion was popular... again, and the other forbidden title also sold heavily through Steam - the RPG, Risen.
If you want to what else sold the most last week, you'll just have to check out the Steam Top Sellers for the week ending October 4th!

What have the gaming public been buying this week via digital distribution platform Steam? ... Aion, lots of Aion so much in fact, that the game took out both spot one and two on the Steam Top Sellers chart this week. Aion was followed by Fallen Earth, while the PC version of Batman: Arkham Asylum also sold a fair few copies. The top five was rounded out by F.E.A.R. 2: Project Origin.

Those of you who have been following the post-release news for F.E.A.R. 2: Project Origin will be aware of some of the crazy trailers Monolith have exposed the gaming public to.
Today sees the release of yet another one of these trailers, and it is scary. Not scary due to its content, but scary due it its production values. It is all done in good humour though, so it manages to escape much of the drama that Ubisoft cooked up last week.

F.E.A.R. 2: Project Origin is still alive and kicking, even though most of us have probably un-installed the PC version of the game by now. If you haven't (or own the game on the PlayStation 3 or Xbox 360) you'll be pleased to know that the latest downloadable content for the game is now available.
To celebrate the occasion, and to entice you to spend your money, a new trailer has been released, featuring semi-corny voice acting that seems to be a thinly veiled post-processing job. In any case, as we've previously reported, if you think that your money is something that you'd rather keep, you can always download the demo before forking out the for the content itself.

It’s the last weekend before the beginning of the traditional holiday rush, where players are flooded with new game releases and essentially spoilt for choice. We’ve all been through this rigmarole before and despite the fact that this year’s line-up is a little thinner thanks to key delays and early releases, we’re still going to be suffering from light wallets and a lack of free time by the end of November.
Like every holiday season before it, there are going to be winners and losers. This week, The Warp Pipe is going to focus on the wildcard releases of the holidays – the games that could be big hits, or fail to catch on.

Late last month, it was revealed that some new content would find its way into F.E.A.R 2: Project Origin, by way of the F.E.A.R 2: Reborn free downloadable content, due for release in Australia on the 4th of September on the Xbox 360 and the PlayStation 3, with the PC not too far away.
The F.E.A.R 2: Reborn downloadable content will feature four new single player levels, and will also introduce Slow-Mo death match. The guys over at Monolith have seen to producing an amusing new trailer promoting the Slow-Mo death match feature - and even if you're not really interested in the actual content, its worth watching to see just how crazy the guys at Monolith are.

News that was missed in all the E3 drama: German ministers have started making plans to ban the distribution and production of all violent video games, with the law due before parliament in the coming weeks.
Germany have always had a pretty strict censorship / classification policy, forcing various big-name games to be edited before being approved for release in the country. Blood is not acceptable and anything to do with the Nazis is forbidden (understandably) - but this new move is a big one.

What better way to start your week than with a bunch of hulking great mechs? That's what you'll get in the latest update for F.E.A.R. 2: Project Origin! The patch has been living in console-exclusive limbo since late May, but it's now available as a standalone download for PC, and it brings the goods.
It's a whopping 900MB in size, but the 1.04 patch, known as Armored Front can be applied to the game right out of the box, as it's also got v1.03 bundled up in there, too. It also introduces two new maps and four new character heads (no, really), to help expand your game experience. And, of course, there are mechs.

First, there was the G5 and the G7, a pair of mice released by Logitech to target the gaming market. Then came the G9 - which was pretty darn awesome, from all accounts.
...but that wasn't good enough, and we now find ourselves looking at the G9x, a revised version of the laser gaming mouse, which boasts the same design, specs and ergonomics as the earlier model - but this time around, you'll be able to adjust the precision up to a whopping 5000 DPI, from the G9's 3200.
Want to know how it works? Steven Perdikis has a review that will tell you just that.

Late last month, we saw the second set of DLC released for spooky shooter F.E.A.R. 2: Project Origin - but the Armored Front pack only arrived for consoles, leaving the poor PC gamers out in the cold.
It's okay now though, boys and girls - today sees a Steam update hitting home computers around the globe and updating Monolith's latest, to include the new DLC, which includes two new maps (Decoy and Conductor), plus four unique character heads for you to customise your gaming experience. Just restart your client for the new content to download!

The lack of an R18+ Rating for computer games in Australia is one issue that has been recently discussed by the Attorneys General of each state. It was previously announced that a discussion paper for public opinion on the matter would be released.
The contents of the paper, which were to be edited by South Australian Attorney General, Michael Atkinson before being released to the public was not met with unanimous agreement by each of the state and territory Attorneys General at the recent Standing Committee of Attorneys General meeting in Canberra.

Terrifying the pants off people is the goal of F.E.A.R. 2: Project Origin. Sometimes, pesky bugs get in the way of achieving that goal. To counter this, Monolith Productions have released a new patch for F.E.A.R. 2: Project Origin which aggressively pursues and destroys some bugs, along with adding some new features.
Firstly, for those complaining about the lack of a challenge - Monolith have looked deep into their black little hearts and made "Hard Mode" even more difficult, they've added a toggle to allow gamers to switch between 16:9 and 4:3 modes, implemented a toggle to enable and disable head-bob, given us the option to remove film grain, and implemented a number of important multi player fixes and other minor bug-squishing.
You can download the update through Steam now - simply restart your client, or attempt to load up the game, and you'll get the update!

Appearing as Santa, Primary Art Lead, and bourbon requester, Dave Matthews accompanies Frosty the Snowman (Multiplayer Level Designer, Tom Hanrahan) - and Rudolph the Reindeer (Associate Producer, Lucas Myers). With a healthy dose of humour, they respond to a bunch of questions from the fans - addressing issues such as the Australian "ban" of F.E.A.R 2: Project Origin (which was recently overturned, along with answering some questions in relation to multiplayer.

We'd heard a few snippets that the upcoming scary sequel would make use of DirectX 10 technology, making the game inaccessible for those of us still using Windows XP. Fortunately, those rumours have been squashed, with Monolith really outdoing themselves in the optimisation stakes.

Last week we checked out some of the best trailers from 2008 but it seems the developers need just a little bit more time to get some new stuff out. So this week we will be looking at some of the best clips for games coming out this year! These videos were made to hype you up and it might have been just a little while since you have seen them. Check them out to understand why 2009 is going to be an excellent year of gaming.
Starting off this week is a high flying fighter. Then we are going back to the origin of a project, as well as hitting the streets for a fight. There is something evil around there and it might just be because of the hammer of war. But luckily we have a commando to swing into action to save us.

What will you remember 2008 for, in terms of gaming?
We asked some of the game admins and network staff to find out their thoughts, but here's a quick recap of the past 12 months, to refresh your memory.
Non-games dominated this year's charts, with Wii Fit rewarding gamers for standing still. As a country, we were still fans of the music game genre too, finally getting our hands on Rock Band, which seemed to have been pushed onto shelves by the release of Guitar Hero: World Tour a week later. Who knows, the full-band version may even have healed some hurt caused by the "interesting" yet awkward Guitar Hero: On Tour release for DS. There was a new Call of Duty to heed, a new Bond to meet, Marcus and Dom were back, and independent developers twisted our brains with Braid and our rhythm skills with Audiosurf. Red Alert was back, and we revisited the Midnight Club. We also saw the release of the "Three Fs" - Far Cry 2, Fable 2, and Fallout 3, meaning many gamers were a bit strapped for cash by the end of the year.
...and, who could forget? 2008 is the year we met Sackboy!

If you are thrilled to bits with the news that F.E.A.R. 2: Project Origin has indeed been given the green light for an Australian release (in February, no less), then I'd like to offer you a couple of videos to celebrate.
For something a bit different, we have a Comic Trailer, which gives a slightly more two-dimentional view of Auburn, the setting for both the original F.E.A.R. and this new sequel. Then, getting even more different, we have a pair of videos that feature the "Unsung Heroes" of developer Monolith, Part #1 and Part #2 taking a look at the IT department.

In what may be seen as a festive display from the Australian Classifications Board, the review process for F.E.A.R 2: Project Origin has been successfully completed, and the game is considered suitable for Australian gamers. The unanimous decision from the Review Board sees the game labelled with an MA 15+ rating, due to "Strong violence, blood and gore. Moderate coarse language".
Even more interestingly - this is exactly the same version of the game that was Refused Classification last month.

Oh no! Time has flown and I can't even believe it is December already. The last of the huge weeks of releases is here and it is the last chance for publishers to get their trailers out before the masses head to do their Christmas shopping.
This week we are heading back to Persia in time for the games release. One of my Final Fantasies comes back in a new game. There is a Storm rising over Project Origin and games considering this their Alpha Protocol. Lastly we get a little Roco in a crazy sequel.

We briefly stepped away from the drama surrounding F.E.A.R. 2: Project Origin, but now it's right back into the thick of it, with an official statement from Warner Bros about the game's future. To put it simply, a spokesperson confirmed this morning that the company is "currently working through the appeals process with the Classifications Board".
If you wanted to refresh yourself about what the game's about, today we also received the third in a series of "Developer Q&A" videos, where the guys behind the scenes at Monolith talk pretty openly about what they've been up to. It also seems like a good time to share with you a couple of nifty behind-the-scenes trailers, which expand on some of the game's concepts.

While some of us are still reeling from the news that F.E.A.R. 2: Project Origin has been refused classification in Australia, thanks to the Classification Board, we now have the full report as to why the game has been effectively banned.
Those of you who were putting money on the fact it was a bit of the old ultra-violence were spot on, with the Board finding that the game contains violence that is "high in impact", and is "unsuitable for a minor to play", in accordance with item 1(d) of the computer games table of the National Classification Code.
If you'd like to know more, read on - but if you're still wanting to play the game, be warned there may be spoilers lurking within.

We all expected F.E.A.R. 2: Project Origin to be shocking - as the sequel to one of the more terrifying games of the past five years it had a lot to live up to. That said, we didn't really expect the shock to come from the Australian Classification Board, which has considered the game to be unsuitable for Australian gamers, refusing it classification in this country.
While we have a copy of the RC statement, we're currently waiting to hear back from the Board about the details behind their decisions - as well as comments from publishers Warner Bros about what their plans are now. Did Alma get a little too bloodthirsty for Australian audiences?

It has been a while since we've heard any news about Monolith's latest software that isn't related to a name change. Today, a new trailer for F.E.A.R. 2: Project Origin has surfaced, which explains that the sequel begins approximately thirty minutes before the first instalment ended.
The trailer also offers insights into the plot from Craig Hubbard, Principle Game Designer. In addition, some new game play footage is featured, which seems to indicate that Monolith have been working on the title feverishly, even if its name has been tentative throughout much of development.

Are we all sitting comfortably, children? I have a story to tell you.
Once upon a time, a Special Forces squad was sent on a routine mission to a little town called Auburn. While they were there, the town was suddenly rocked by a huge supernatural explosion! Alma, a little girl living in the city, had developed immense power and a great thirst for revenge, and she has unleashed her wrath upon the townsfolk, throwing them - and their homes - into chaos!
Would you like to know more about this little girl named Alma? She has her very own video for you to watch, and a game is being made about her - F.E.A.R. 2: Project Origin.

F.E.A.R. 2: Project Origin, developed by Monolith, is one of few pieces of intellectual property returning to the game market after a time of absence. While the guys at Monolith produce generally macabre games, their fun-loving, happy sides shine through in a new Developer Interview we've got for you.
A few weeks ago, Jessica Citizen reported that Monolith had regained the rights to utilise the F.E.A.R branding, purchasing it from Sierra before the hand of the once software giant (now in a state of relative uncertainty) crushed the license before its new overlords, Activision Blizzard.

With the news this week of this anticipated sequel officially getting the original name back. The team at Monolith Productions have sent us a brand new trailer to show off F.E.A.R. 2: Project Origin.
While we might have to wait until next year to see the return of Alma, the trailer is pretty impressive and one that I think fans will be drooling over until release day.

Every time that we mention Monolith's upcoming scary shooter Project Origin, we feel the need to explain that it is "essentially, F.E.A.R. 2". Well, that explanation is now totally unnecessary, with Monolith and publishers Warner Bros re-acquiring the name from former publishers Sierra.
What does this mean? Basically, that you should adjust your wishlists to now include F.E.A.R. 2: Project Origin - and if you'd been hanging out for the Sierra title known as F.E.A.R. 2, the future's looking bleak.

With the Leipzig Games Connection coming to an end, we have still been getting in some amazing trailers for some great looking games coming up. With so many trailers out this week, I decided to include a special mention to some of the others that were impressive. So bring it on!
Some of the trailers this week are a little bit sacred and just end too quickly. You might need a wheel for a couple of them or know their origins, be it ancient dragons or future projects. But you can just sit back and enjoy watching the storm.

I mentioned last week that Now Playing would have a nice little role for E3 and bring you something special. Every night this week, Now Playing will be bringing you some of the many, many trailers we receive this week from the E3 Media & Business Summit.
Leading off for this special event is a few heroes and villains in pieces, an original project that is a little fearful and an empire that seems to be, once again, experiencing war. Also we have a nice round up of all the other trailers that have caught our attention. Stay tuned sports fans as this week is only going to get more exciting!

This week is massive! There is just no other way to describe it. So many excellent trailers have appeared in the last week so much so that I couldn't even begin to list them all in here. It seems that alot of companies are going with the cinematic trailers as well, which do make for some interesting viewing.
Our favourite snake is back again showing off his latest story. There is some battles forged of epic proportions. The scary origins of a well known story and a project thats a little fearful. A new trailer for a game thats on the eve of coming out and a gameplay video of some medieval blades and err... mounts.

By now, you all know the drill. Set just before the end of F.E.A.R., a Special Forces squad has been sent on a routine mission in Auburn, when the city is rocked by a huge, supernatural explosion. It seems that Alma, a little girl with a thirst for revenge and immense power, has taken out her anger upon the city.

This shouldn't surprise anyone - not only is Australia a pretty cool place to be, but WB's Next Big Thing is Looney Tunes: Acme Arsenal, developed by local company, Red Tribe.

We told you a while back that Monolith were looking for a title for their sequel to F.E.A.R..
After a lengthy submission and voting process, they've finally announced the winner. Beating Dark Signal and Dead Echo in the voting stakes, I'd like to formally announce Project Origin. Not content with merely releasing a statement to that effect, Monolith are also giving gamers a video of the naming process, so you can see how it goes behind the scenes.

Looking for something to do to pass a few moments today? Why not go vote for the title of Monolith's new F.E.A.R. sequel?
It's the usual story, developer creates game, enters publishing deal. Developer and publisher part ways - developer retains some parts of the IP, publisher retains others, including the name. Both companies later release follow-ups to the original title.
Anyway. Monolith ran a competition earlier this year (only open to American residents) to pick the new name for their upcoming title - and now they've turned the three finalists back on the mercy of the crowd.
