[TGS] KOEI's new line up
Tokyo Game Show, I love you. Japan is a country that really gets my desire to hit things with sticks, and local boys KOEI were out in force on the show floor. Fans of frantic, button-mashing hack-and-slash are in for a real treat, with trailers and screenshots from not one, not two, not even three but four upcoming releases. Let's kick off the action with Omega Force's brand new fantasy IP, TRINITY: Souls of Zill O'll.

Dynasty Warriors Strikeforce coming to PS3, Xbox 360
Even a hardcore hit-thing-with-sticks fan such as myself has to admit defeat sometimes. My copy of Dynasty Warriors Strikeforce sits accusingly amongst the other UMDs, gathering dust. It's not that I dislike the game, it's that I'm stuck - and don't have time for the estimated three months of grinding it would take me to overcome this hurdle. A few like-minded companions could solve my problem - but finding another PSP owner, let alone a Dynasty Warriors fan, has so far proved fruitless.

Thank goodness! It looks like we'll be seeing the game on Playstation 3 and Xbox 360, with a bevy of party members just a modem away.

Dynasty Warriors 6: Empires repeats itself with three new trailers
Last year's RSI has just started to settle down, and now we're only a few days from the release of Dynasty Warriors 6: Empires. Apparently KOEI weren't satisfied with the havoc they caused by sending us one hundred and eleven screenshots last week, and are still trying to fill up our mirror, delivering three new trailers, as well. It's quite a nice little trilogy, giving us a good look at the edit mode, demonstrating some new gameplay features, and featuring the return of the king - the mighty Meng Huo!

Dynasty Warriors 6 Empires screen-splosion
If you are anticipating Dynasty Warriors 6 Empires, I can utilise my tremendous psychic powers to ferret out little clues to your personality. For example, the spirits tell me that you have quite toned fingers, a liking for flamboyant characters and action, and a very high tolerance for repetition, Clearly, KOEI have an equally talented medium in their camp, because for your delectation, they have forwarded one hundred and eleven new screenshots in one enormous delivery. Why they suddenly felt the need after months of near silence, even my clairvoyance cannot fathom.

Dynasty Warriors Strikeforce demo out tomorrow; KOEI comments
Fans of pressing square repeatedly are in for a bit of a treat tomorrow - or possibly even today, with the time zone confusion - as a multiplayer Dynasty Warriors Strikeforce demo makes its way to the Playstation Network. The demo was announced today and was accompanied by a dramatic trailer and some interesting comments on the game's production from KOEI producer Kenichi Ogasawara.

New screens for Dynasty Warriors Strikeforce as release day approaches
In the current atmosphere of renewed interest in the PSP, it's nice to be able to cover games that have been crafted specifically with the console in mind, rather than dodgy ports that would be better enjoyed in their original format. Dynasty Warriors Strikeforce is not the first of the series to make be a PSP-exclusive, but KOEI are clearly bringing their experience from the last few titles to bear on this latest entry into the popular franchise, and it certainly shows in these new screens.

Bright Forecast: Dynasty Warriors 6 Empires
It's a good day when I get hold of some concrete information regarding my favourite hack-and-slash series, and most especially when said information addresses a lot of the issues fans have aired regarding the latest installment, Dynasty Warriors 6. The first tie-in title to the black sheep of the family, Dynasty Warriors 6 Empires was expected to be more of the same, but KOEI's Omega-Force team seem to have taken some of the negative feedback on board for once, with the restoration of unique move sets for many characters, the return of characters who were missing altogether, and some tweaks to gameplay.

2008 - a year in review
What will you remember 2008 for, in terms of gaming?

We asked some of the game admins and network staff to find out their thoughts, but here's a quick recap of the past 12 months, to refresh your memory.

Non-games dominated this year's charts, with Wii Fit rewarding gamers for standing still. As a country, we were still fans of the music game genre too, finally getting our hands on Rock Band, which seemed to have been pushed onto shelves by the release of Guitar Hero: World Tour a week later. Who knows, the full-band version may even have healed some hurt caused by the "interesting" yet awkward Guitar Hero: On Tour release for DS. There was a new Call of Duty to heed, a new Bond to meet, Marcus and Dom were back, and independent developers twisted our brains with Braid and our rhythm skills with Audiosurf. Red Alert was back, and we revisited the Midnight Club. We also saw the release of the "Three Fs" - Far Cry 2, Fable 2, and Fallout 3, meaning many gamers were a bit strapped for cash by the end of the year.
...and, who could forget? 2008 is the year we met Sackboy!

New Dynasty Warriors trailer - again!
It's seems only yesterday that I was allowed to indulge my obsession with all things Warriors. Oh wait - that's because it was. Well, anyway, putting aside yesterday's rant on expansion packs, more Dynasty Warriors news has emerged from the Tokyo Game Show, in the form of a trailer for a brand new PSP title, Dynasty Warriors: Strikeforce which promises to be a different concept from the other titles in KOEI's successful third-person battlefield games. Gooooo trailer!

First Dynasty Warriors 6 expansion confirmed by trailer
If you're a fan of pressing square (and if you are you'll know what I mean), you'll probably already by intrigued by the article's title. If not, a brief refresher: Dynasty Warriors 6, the latest installment in KOEI's best-selling battlefield action series, was received by fans with mixed feelings due to its unfinished nature. The series has made a habit of releasing expansion packs including extra content, but the latest title appeared missing at least half its content, angering many who saw the move as a vanilla money-making exercise by dividing the full game into pieces, as opposed to the fan-favourite extras to the main game contained in previous expansions.

Whether you feel KOEI are justified or not, the fact remains that Dynasty Warriors 6 is not a full game, and something must be done if you're to continue indulging your square-tapping-obsession. Mysterious screenshots abound, but this trailer from the Tokyo Game Show is the first official look at the next expansion.

Now Playing (26/08/08) - GC Special!
With the Leipzig Games Connection coming to an end, we have still been getting in some amazing trailers for some great looking games coming up. With so many trailers out this week, I decided to include a special mention to some of the others that were impressive. So bring it on!

Some of the trailers this week are a little bit sacred and just end too quickly. You might need a wheel for a couple of them or know their origins, be it ancient dragons or future projects. But you can just sit back and enjoy watching the storm.

Napoleon's Campaigns full version available Friday
Don't be put off by the uninspiring website, the only reason Napoleon's Campaigns looks a bit dull is because, unlike that other somewhat historical series of games I frequently rant about, Napoleon's Campaigns takes its historical representation very seriously. This means, alas, no running around hitting square - we are firmly in the world of turn-based strategy.

For those of us who aren't history buffs this might sound a little dull, but bear in mind the publisher, Nobilis are also responsible for Cleopatra: A Queen's Destiny, which doesn't look, ah, absolutely serious, and if you dislike being on the (eventual) losing side, after you play through the regular campaigns historical accuracy gets thrown out the window.

Are Gamers Anti-Social freaks? New Study says: Maybe!
There's always a lot of talk thrown around about the negative effects of video games, with everything from violent crime to bullying to obsessive stacking of different coloured boxes being laid at the feet of exposure to a volatile media. A recent study by Dr John Charlton and Ian Danforth (University of Bolton and Whitman College respectively) has taken a refreshing approach to the subject, rather than just going down the line of "You play games? You monster!"

Roar, Blue Dragon!
Whenever I hear Blue Dragon I can't help but think of Guan Yu in Dynasty Warriors. Some of you may be disappointed to hear that the Chinese war deity doesn't make an appearance in Hironobu Sakaguchi's company Mistwalker's offering. Luckily for the secret fanboys and girls amongst us, plenty of other fairly glorious sounds do.
