EA stands firm in Edge trademark battle
These are litigious times. It only takes one or two incidents and large corporations start walking around on tiptoe, desperate not to offend or trample anybody, or recruiting armies of overpaid lawyers to protect them from harm. Nevertheless, unscrupulous characters still manage to take advantage of some unfortunate holes in international legal systems, and come away with some nice profits.

According to mega publisher EA, One such individual is Tim Langdell of Edge Games. EA have upped the ante in an ongoing trademark war between the two companies by requesting that several of Edge Games' trademarks be canceled.

Creative "Overlord" of the development studio, Lennart Sas speaks in the trailer about the second game in the series, which will launch in June this year on the PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.

nVidia and Sony get Physical
Sony and nVidia have signed an agreement which will enable registered PlayStation 3 developers free use and downloads of the nVidia PhysX SDK. The PhysX technology, which nVidia purchased from Aegia last year has moved (in nVidia hand's) from a hardware based API to a software API - which means that PhsyX code can run on any CPU for which it is compiled.

PhysX is built into a number of game engines (with the most notable being the Unreal 3 engine) - and offers developers "unprecedented creative control over character and object physical interactions by allowing them to author and preview physics effects in real time". With nVidia to provide support to PlayStation 3 developers with PhysX, it is anticipated that optimised physics routines will be placed in some forthcoming PlayStation 3 titles, allowing developers to dedicate more system resources to shaders, AI and other parts of the game engine.

Xbox 360: The Top 20 LIVE Games of 2008
The end of the year is typically the time for roundups and recaps, summing up the year past - but sometimes, it takes a little while longer to compile all the information, bumping the news to the new year. This is the case with the official Xbox 360 Top 20 LIVE Games of 2008 list, which has just been announced.

We have here the list of both the the Original Xbox and Xbox 360 Top Live Titles (both lists based on unique users), as well as the Top Arcade Titles (based on full versions purchased). Not sure if there's any real surprises here (hello, Halo), but it is interesting to note the number of demos in the list that are not accompanied by the full game.

2008 - a year in review
What will you remember 2008 for, in terms of gaming?

We asked some of the game admins and network staff to find out their thoughts, but here's a quick recap of the past 12 months, to refresh your memory.

Non-games dominated this year's charts, with Wii Fit rewarding gamers for standing still. As a country, we were still fans of the music game genre too, finally getting our hands on Rock Band, which seemed to have been pushed onto shelves by the release of Guitar Hero: World Tour a week later. Who knows, the full-band version may even have healed some hurt caused by the "interesting" yet awkward Guitar Hero: On Tour release for DS. There was a new Call of Duty to heed, a new Bond to meet, Marcus and Dom were back, and independent developers twisted our brains with Braid and our rhythm skills with Audiosurf. Red Alert was back, and we revisited the Midnight Club. We also saw the release of the "Three Fs" - Far Cry 2, Fable 2, and Fallout 3, meaning many gamers were a bit strapped for cash by the end of the year.
...and, who could forget? 2008 is the year we met Sackboy!

The Warp Pipe - 14/12/08
With Christmas rapidly approaching, The Warp Pipe is calling time for 2008. After 45 columns without a break this year, I’m clocking off a little early to read a few books, watch some movies, replay some of 2008’s best games and of course, fly to Queensland to spend Christmas with the family. The Warp Pipe will be back on the 18th of January with a few minor tweaks and a couple of bold predictions for 2009.

Speaking of bold proclamations, The Warp Pipe made a few just before the start of the second, third and final quarters of the year. I thought we’d use the final column of the year evaluating my ability to predict the quality of soon-to-be-released video games.

Mirror's Edge has been penned by a Pratchett
It has been a little while since we last heard anything about Mirror's Edge. Developed by DICE, (yes, the same DICE that brought us the Battlefield series) Mirror's Edge is set in a seemingly utopian, futuristic society in which the player takes control of a character called Faith.

In the world of Mirror's Edge, the delivery of information is an extremely important market. The leaders in this profession are people called 'runners'. Faith is one of these runners, who is being hunted by the police, following her sister's framing for a crime never committed.

We've had a runner let us know some tasty tidbits of information regarding Mirror's Edge. Most notably - this includes the appointment of Rhianna Pratchett (daughter of the well known fantasy writer Terry Pratchett) as the writer behind Mirror's Edge. In addition to that, we've got a new trailer which introduces us to Faith, along with a few new screenshots.
