There have been a couple of sleepless nights at The Warp Pipe household lately; a large rat getting into the crawlspace and scurrying along the walls, a set of nearby security lights staying on all night, and some exam related panic from my partner all contributed to reduced snoozing hours.
The inability to sleep usually results in deep thought, and it just so happened that most of these thoughts were related to video games, so this week we'll have a look at a couple of random video game related thoughts.

Welcome to Now Playing, where each week, we guide you through a selection of trailers from recently released or upcoming games. Sometimes, the trailers are good, other times, the trailers are bad. The one strand of consistency that holds Now Playing together is the fact that there are always trailers.
This week, we take a look at LEGO Rock Band, Starcraft 2, Dragon Age: Origins, The Saboteur, and BioShock 2.

Each week, we collate the most popular stories that we published over the past seven days, plus a lineup of the most downloaded files added in the same timeframe. That way, in case you missed something, you can catch up in one helpful little spot, every Monday morning.
Last week, StarCraft II was big news, even though there wasn't really any big announcements about the game at BlizzCon this year. A great bug update for Battlefield 2 was also popular, followed by a trailer for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. Also popular were a bunch trailers from Ubisoft.
What else was popular last week? Read on to find out!

Still at BlizzCon 2009, we got the opportunity to spend some time with the Lead Designer of StarCraft II, Dustin Browder. You might remember him from such Blizzard projects as the StarCraft II Battle Reports, where he is one of the announcers. Let me tell you, the man can talk.
The weekend didn't really hold too much in the way of big StarCraft II news, so we decided to get Dustin to talk us through some more details about the new Battle.net service which is due to launch with the game, "When it's done".

Last week, people who didn't make it to the Brisbane meet up wanted to know everything that happened. While that really wasn't gaming news, (the announcement of the PlayStation 3 slim took that honour), news from BlizzCon also proved to be extremely popular. Other popular news involved a certain upcoming MMO being given "best seller status", and a teaser trailer for another MMO (incidentally, from the same company) capturing the attention of hundreds of gamers.

Well, BlizzCon is over for another year, and while it came in with a pop of pyrotechnics, it's gone out with a roar, thanks to the one and only Ozzy Osbourne (the only mortal to successfully challenge Arthas for the title of Prince of Darkness). My ears are still ringing, but I'm here to let you know just what we got up to during Day 2 of this celebration of all things Blizzard.
To summarise briefly: we caught up with the pro-gaming situation, watched StarCraft exhibition matches, checked out the new World of Warcraft magazine, spent a bit of time in the retro arcade... and generally wandered aimlessly through the four halls of the Convention Center, along with 20,000 other gamers.

As UgLyPuNk mentioned earlier today, we are indeed over here in California for BlizzCon 2009. Games On Net spent the day on the show floor, running around and checking out the various cosplayers, looking at the artwork on display, guessing which attendees are actually pro-gamers, and generally having a bit of a great time.
In case you've been enjoying your time under that rock, BlizzCon is an almost-annual celebration of all things Blizzard, taking elements from their three major gaming franchises, StarCraft, Diablo and Warcraft (of course, not ignoring World of Warcraft). It's two days, 20,000 people, a convention center and a lot of fun.

Well, here we are in sunny California for the fourth celebration of all things Blizzard! That's right, BlizzCon is upon us for another year, and this time around we're expecting some big news from the worlds of Warcraft, StarCraft and Diablo, not to mention the changes that are in store for Battle.net.
If you missed it, we sat through the Opening Ceremony so you didn't have to - and if you missed it, trust me: you missed out.
We were expecting an announcement about the next Diablo III class, and we got that: the Monk.
We wanted news on what was happening in WoW, and we got that: the next expansion pack, Cataclysm! Not only is it looking like it will literally change the game's landscape, but it also introduces Goblins and Worgen!

Welcome to this week's instalment of Now Playing, where each week we strive to bring you a collection of interesting, sometimes wonderful, sometimes woeful trailers.
This week sees a diverse bunch of trailers, with some new single player content from Starcraft II leading the charge. After we're done fighting the zerg, we go to fight a different kind of foe after travelling through the Stargate. Once we get back to Earth, we spend some time in race cars making some things pretty DiRTY.
Once the cars make us angry, we'll start destroying them, as if we are a Dragon Rising. Finally, we take some time to meet Wynne, who is a character that will feature in an upcoming game from Bioware.

Last week, people wanted to know why the Australian Classification Board decided to swing its ban hammer at the game Risen. Team Fortress 2 remained as popular as ever, with a large update bringing a bunch of new features to the game. Bennett's time with Halo 3: ODST was also in demand. On the demo front, the Darkest of Days demo made a few people's days darker. Finally, information regarding the limited edition of CITIES XL was also popular, suggesting that we'll see a lot of cities built once the game is finally released.

Then again, Razer have never before released a line of Starcraft II branded accessories! The specially-designed range will eventually include mouse, keyboard and headset, but kicks off with this snazzy messenger bag.

The Internet can on some days be a great thing, while on other days, it can bring bad news.
Today, those of you who are sitting on the edges of your seats ready to spring off to the shops with money in hand, hopeful that you'll return home with a pre-order receipt and a solid release date for Starcraft II will be saddened to know that the game is now not expected to release until some point in the first of half of 2010.
Blizzard have noted that the reason for the delay is related to the new Battle.Net - which, according to Blizzard will "take longer than expected" to implement.

As we've reported previously, BlizzCon 2009 sold out in record time. But! It's okay if you missed out (or if you can't get to Anaheim for August 21-22), you can still celebrate all things to do with Blizzard (that means StarCraft, WarCraft, WoW, Diablo and all associated other bits and pieces) from the comfort of your own home.
While we have received official word that there will not be a Pay-Per-View television partner this year for Australians (sorry guys!), you can still grab your "Virtual Ticket" and watch more than 18 hours of live coverage thanks to the DirecTV streaming coverage. And yes - you do get your own Grunty (the Murloc Marine!) just for being there.

Last month, we heard Mike Morhaime from Blizzard state that the first instalment of StarCraft II would be on shelves by the end of the year.
Today however, it seems that there's some debate about whether or not that will happen, with the news that parent company Activision Blizzard are looking to push a couple of big-name games over the calendar into 2010.
Those games? Raven's new shooter Singularity, and (you guessed it), StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty.

Blizzard's upcoming RTS StarCraft II is easily one of the most anticipated PC titles for gamers. It comes as a fairly major surprise to learn that the full game will not include support for LAN play, with all users of the game required to be currently logged into Battle.net in order to play the game with friends.
This news may come to a shock, but Blizzard Vice President of Game Design, Rob Pardo has clarified the statements that he made in a recent interview, explaining that because of the "new" Battle.net that will be shipping with Starcraft II, several pieces of "planned technology" for the game are built right into Battle.net.
Update: A Statement from Blizzard seeks to clarify the matter.

It was leaked over the weekend, but we can now confirm that Blizzard have officially released Battle Report 3 for StarCraft II.
Set on new map Scrapyard, watch as the Protoss (represented by David Kim - StarCraft II associate game balance designer) take on the Zerg (Blizzard's Yeon-Ho Lee) in a 17-minute squabble narrated by Dustin Browder and Robert Simpson.
The game is "currently in the alpha phase" of development, according to the devs - but it's worth noting that what we're seeing in the video is not the most recent version of the game.

Sure, if Blizzard CEO Mike Morhaime is to believed. He just made the announcement to a gathering of Activision Blizzard investors and media, as part of the company's pre-E3 press conference.
While the Activision part of the event was understandably dominated by Guitar Hero, DJ Hero and Modern Warfare 2, Mike didn't really make any great announcements about what Blizzard are up to - except the hopeful release date for their next RTS.

Incidentally, while this is great news, it looks like "soon" might not be quite as quick as we'd hoped, with Blizzard revealing that if you sign up today, you will be notified "in the coming months". First making an appearance in this week's Now Playing, the latest Starcraft II Battle Report is so eye-candy dazzling and mouth wateringly exceptional it deserves more of the spotlight. This new in-game footage clocks in at 22 minutes. And what a 22 minutes it is. The polish is bar-none top notch and its unbelievable the game is only in alpha. The video clearly demonstrates that Blizzard Entertainment and their artists redefine the rules by pushing their own magnificent standards even further. Lock-down or not, the hard work by the artists has clearly paid off in spades - StarCraft II simply looks marvelous.

The fine folk over at Blizzard Entertainment have unveiled the latest iteration of Battle.net, which allows World of Warcraft account holders and other Blizzard customers to access their World of Warcraft accounts, the WoW Armoury, forums, and other Blizzard services through the use of a single set of log-in details.
The new Battle.Net accounts are described as "an evolution" of existing Blizzard accounts, with all Blizzard account holders now Battle.Net account holders. Details regarding this should have been emailed to users who are affected. At the present time, the changes only apply to North American (which, by extension, affects Australian accounts), with the changes expected to roll out to European and Korean users in the near future.

Think you're a creative, writerly type? Enjoy the Warcraft, StarCraft or Diablo universes? Well, now's the time to combine the two, with Blizzard announcing their first ever global writing contest.
All you need to do is sit down at scribble out a 3,000-10,000 word story written in English and based in one of those three universes, and submit it before April 12th. The winner, as judged by Blizzard's own writers and lore-masters, will receive not only a sparkly Frostmourne sword, but also a trip to Blizzard HQ in California to meet (and eat!) with the Blizzard writing staff.

While it feels like we've hardly recovered from the last one, Blizzard have just announced their plans to hold their next BlizzCon gaming convention in August of this year. Proving that the company is, in fact, on track to take over the world, they've also announced that this year's event, to be held as usual in the Anaheim Convention Center, has expanded yet again - from three convention halls to four. Wow. (Pun not intended, honest!)

After a couple of weeks of rest, The Warp Pipe is back with renewed vigour. We’ll be shuffling things around a bit this year to find the best fit; you’ll notice that the column will be a little shorter and perhaps less retrospective than it has been, but the point here is to both inform and entertain, and I hope to be doing a lot of that in the next 12 months.
To kick things off this year, I’ll be putting on my fortune teller’s hat and making predictions about what will happen in the video game industry in 2009.

What will you remember 2008 for, in terms of gaming?
We asked some of the game admins and network staff to find out their thoughts, but here's a quick recap of the past 12 months, to refresh your memory.
Non-games dominated this year's charts, with Wii Fit rewarding gamers for standing still. As a country, we were still fans of the music game genre too, finally getting our hands on Rock Band, which seemed to have been pushed onto shelves by the release of Guitar Hero: World Tour a week later. Who knows, the full-band version may even have healed some hurt caused by the "interesting" yet awkward Guitar Hero: On Tour release for DS. There was a new Call of Duty to heed, a new Bond to meet, Marcus and Dom were back, and independent developers twisted our brains with Braid and our rhythm skills with Audiosurf. Red Alert was back, and we revisited the Midnight Club. We also saw the release of the "Three Fs" - Far Cry 2, Fable 2, and Fallout 3, meaning many gamers were a bit strapped for cash by the end of the year.
...and, who could forget? 2008 is the year we met Sackboy!

While the world is currently in the grip of a financial crisis, it looks like it'll take more than that to persuade gamers to give up their beloved MMORPG. More than 11.5 million people around the world are active subscribers to what else but World of Warcraft.
The revelation comes from developers Blizzard Entertainment, who say the new record was reached just a month following the November release of the latest expansion pack, Wrath of the Lich King.

While originally, gamers were hoping to have StarCraft II in their hot little hands come Christmas 2008, we all know that didn't happen - and with the news from BlizzCon that the single game has now been expanded out into a trilogy, who can blame them for not rushing?
If you want to see just how far development has gotten with StarCraft II, while Blizzard haven't given us a playable version, they have released the first in (hopefully) a series of shoutcasts - Battle Report #1 - which pits gamer against gamer in an alpha version of the new game.

Blizzard Entertainment's one and only live-operating MMOG, World of Warcraft, sports 11 million players worldwide, and while the masses wait for Wrath of the Lich King (due out November 14th in Australia), the live realms were upgraded to the enormous game-changing 3.0.2 patch dubbed Echoes of Doom. (Do not delete your 3.0 patch files you will need them for the WotlK installation.)
So with all that’s going on with WoW it’s easy to forget that Blizzard Entertainment is developing a next-generation MMOG which is in the early stages. The listed employment opportunities for the top-secret project don’t shed any light on what genre or franchise the MMOG will be based on. Nor were any details leaked out at BlizzCon. Considering the lack of new properties in the last decade speculation has run rampant that the next-generation MMOG will be a sequel to World of Warcraft.

Just a few days ago, we revealed that StarCraft II would not be released as a single, massive game, but instead become a trilogy. Today, we've received some new details clarifying the nature of the "trilogy", presented in a question and answer format.
Firstly, it will not be three separate games. Instead, The StarCraft II Trilogy will consist of the "base game", and two expansion packs that will be released at a later stage. The base game (with a working subtitle of Wings of Liberty) will follow the Terrans, with a central focus on Jim Raynor. The first expansion, Heart of the Swarm (again, a working title) will focus on the Zerg and Sarah Kerrigan. The second expansion set, Legacy of the Void will see the Protoss story unfold at length.
Today, more details have emerged, which should assuage any uncertainties or misconceptions that were raised by the trilogy announcement.

Wow. It was looking a bit like BlizzCon wasn't really going to pull out anything amazingly exciting, but we've just been blown away.
StarCraft II has just been confirmed - it's not a single game any more. They just had toooo much content, so rather than compromise on quantity or quality, they've expanded the title into a trilogy, with one game looking at each race.

Sitting patiently in this over-airconditioned space (I feel so sorry for the cosplayers who aren't wearing very much at all!), we're waiting for the next panel, which is all about the gameplay in StarCraft II. It'll be interesting to see what they've got up their sleeves today - sounds like there's plenty of fans here!
Nobody's quite sure what to expect - but that seems to be the theme of the day. I've got my seat, and I'll wave at any television cameras I see. Stick around, we'll be walking through the panel in its entirety, maybe we might learn something!

I'm about to spend my weekend surrounded by brand new playable versions of Blizzard games, and while I promise I'll tell you all about them, I know it's not quite the same. Still, while I'm running around playing Diablo 3, StarCraft II and Wrath of the Lich King, you get your own selection of free games, clients and playable demos. It's not all bad, right?
This week, we have for you demos from 3D Backgammon, Astronoid, Bubble Bobble Quest, CellFighter, Crysis Wars, Discovera, Dynasty Warriors 6, Galactic Dream: Rage of War, Haunted House Quest, Jezzball Deluxe, PacShooter 3D, Petank Party, Pro Evolution Soccer 2009, Project Aftermath, James Bond: Quantum of Solace, Silly Balls, Sixty Five Million And One BC, Super Cubes, Teddy Wars, War Leaders: Clash of Nations, Worm 2000
and we also have full games from the IGDA 48 hour Games Competition, Rise & Fall: Civilizations at War.

Well well, here we are at BlizzCon, at the Anaheim Convention Center. Officially starting tomorrow morning, we'll be bringing you all the news from the show floor, including videos, photos, panel details, tournament results and even interviews with suitably important people. I'm not sure how we're going to get the time to do all that though - we've just learned that Diablo 3 will be playable this weekend, so we may be a little ...distracted.
Anyway. This evening, we went and picked up our goody bags from the front desk - and we've brought them back to the hotel to dissect. Live vicariously with us, won't you?

When I mentioned that people would be compulsively hitting refresh, trying to score tickets to this year's BlizzCon, I wasn't kidding.
Tickets went on sale on Monday, US time, and the site was quickly swamped by fans of Warcraft, StarCraft, Diablo and of course that popular MMO - pushing the page into oblivion, as it repeatedly crashed soon after launch. It took more than 24 hours for the servers to recover properly, with the site again consistently offering tickets for US$100 Tuesday afternoon. Within a matter of hours, all of the available tickets had sold out.
A "small reserve" of tickets will be made available at 8pm PDT (12:30 Adelaide time), for those who missed out - if you want them, you'll have to be superquick.

Last year's tickets sold out super-quick, so the exact time that tickets will be released hasn't been announced, which means there will be gamers sitting by their computer frantically refreshing the sales page.

While we still haven't seen the announcement for The Lost Rock and Roll World of DiabloCraft V, I'd say that Blizzard Entertainment's Worldwide Invitational, held in Paris over this weekend has been a runaway success.
Obviously the highlight was the announcement of Diablo III in the opening address, but there's been some gems announced for upcoming World of Warcraft expansion, Wrath of the Lich King, as well as some new details revealed for StarCraft II.
We've still got some trained monkeys chained to typewriters in the back room, frantically typing up all our notes from various panels and information we've been given, but for now, our attention is focussed on the Closing Ceremony, just in case there's any new revelations.

That's enough (for now) about Diablo III. It's now time to concentrate on Blizzard's other highly-anticipated upcoming release, the one announced at last year's Worldwide Invitational in Korea.
Executive Vice President Rob Pardo takes the stage and settles in to explain a few things about StarCraft II. Sounds like the guys behind the scenes are itching to re-design the StarCraft idea from the ground up, but still keeping the pace and feeling that's attached to the franchise.
Part of the way they're doing this is to introduce new units, taking that as an opportunity to make the differences within the races as distinct as possible. Each of the three races - Zerg, Protoss and Terran - are very different, and each new unit emphasises the distinctions, as well as obviously bringing in new strategies, and different ways to utilise otherwise familiar aspects of the game.

If you've been paying attention, you'd know that Jay Wilson is the Lead Designer on Diablo III, and he recently took to the stage in Paris, with two other Blizzard designers, to talk about behind-the-scenes design work for the game.
Once he got his "clicky thing" to work, he has to show off the "cool art", before explaining that the original Diablo was really the first of its kind, the first "real" role-playing game, and it really revolutionised the gaming market. Diablo II helped this when it was released several years later - and now, Diablo III is here to take that design even further (and we've got all the details!).

I hate to be the bringer of bad news, but in his Worldwide Invitational presentation about StarCraft II, Blizzard Executive Vice President Rob Pardo has effectively squashed the recent suggestion that the game would be arriving on store shelves on December 3rd.
Speaking about the game's development, he explained that they were "about a third of the way through" the campaign, and were concentrating on story structure and cinematics at this point - commenting that by the end of the year, Blizzard should have something very impressive to show off.
Looks like you can ask for something else for Christmas, then - a street date for StarCraft II is still a while away. On the other hand, he also confirmed that for the Apple gamers among us, they are intending (as with most other Blizzard games) that there will be a simultaneous launch on PC and Macintosh, so you don't miss out.

The third episode of BlizzCast has been uploaded, and we've finally gotten our copy to share with you. This is the 'new' podcast from the guys at Blizzard Entertainment, where they take the time to give you a taste of what it's like behind-the-scenes at one of the world's biggest developers.
This time around, it looks like the length has doubled again, as they chat to Dustin Browder (lead designer of StarCraft II) about the evolution of the StarCraft series, Jeff Caplan (lead designer of World of Warcraft) about dungeons and raids in WoW and its expansions, and Joeyray Hall (manager of video production) about making machinima. All that, plus the usual Community Q&A with the Blizzard devs, and you've got a pretty spiffy little podcast, which you can grab right here.

Hanging out for StarCraft II? Take a deep breath, a handful of US retailers may have just let the cat out of the bag about when you'll likely be able to get your hands on a copy of the eagerly-anticipated intergalactic RTS sequel. While developers Blizzard have continued their vow of silence on the topic, three gaming shops in the US have all posted the same supposed release date - December 3rd, 2008 - on their websites.
This news comes just a few days before Blizzard host their fourth Worldwide Invitational in Paris (the first time the event's been held outside of Korea) - so, while I'd take it right now with a grain of salt, all may be revealed over the 28th-29th when gamers converge on France. Keep in mind that the game was first announced at last year's Invitational, so a follow-up announcement this year may not be out of the question.

Sticking with the Blizzard theme from earlier, the games developer has just announced that they're planning a third BlizzCon gaming convention to be held in October, in Anaheim, California.
In case you weren't up with these things, BlizzCon is a celebration of all things Blizzard! It takes the global player communities from the StarCraft, Warcraft (yes, including WoW), and Diablo franchises and throws them all into a couple of Californian convention halls, full of panels, playable games, previews, exhibitions and - of course - cosplay.

We also got around to updating the Screenshot archive, with enough screenshots and pieces of concept art to wallpaper a house.

Blizzard Entertainment have unveiled the plans for their fourth Worldwide Invitational. In case you'd forgotten, last year's Invitational in Korea saw StarCraft II be announced, but no word yet on whether or not this year will include a similar bombshell.
2008 sees the Invitational head to Europe for the first time, with the event being held in Paris on June 28th and 29th, bringing the company together with gamers in a convention-style atmosphere to celebrate the games - and communities surrounding those games - that Blizzard have created. The Warcraft, Diablo and StarCraft franchises will all be highlighted - including top eSports gamers from each game showing off their skillz.

I've got a pretty basic plan in place for what's going to be in the column each week; I rant about something to do with video games, remember old games, make silly predictions and tell you the industry is full of poo, and then you jump onto the Internode forums and rant about how I know nothing and should be shot out of a cannon or be forced to ghost-write John Howard's memoirs.

What will you remember 2007 for, in terms of gaming?
We asked some of the game admins and network staff to find out their thoughts, but I'll give you a quick recap first:
Australia got the PS3 in a bit of an anti-climactic launch, bringing with it a bit of resistance, as well as a stormy racer. We got a new Command & Conquer, another episode of Half-Life 2, a final Halo and didn't get the latest Grand Theft Auto. The world was thrown into "what-if?" with a little game from Massive, a motley crew of cartoons finally arrived, making up Team Fortress 2, and the Call of Duty was heard on a more modern battlefield. Ingame physics were turned on their head and flipped inside-out with Valve's puzzling Portal, our favourite four-fingered family arrived on almost every console known to man, first-person shooters got genetically-engineered, and the world was overrun by pocket monsters, both handheld and motion-sensitive. It's also been a big year for a little Italian plumber, who not only took over the soccer field, he also had a party or two and even headed into space, as well as turning somewhat more two-dimensional. Blizzard released their first MMO expansion, announced their second, revealed that 9 million people played World of Warcraft, took the covers off of StarCraft II, and still managed to keep tight-lipped on their new project.
The Games Network has done a whole bunch of work behind the scenes, making things a lot nicer and easier to work with, even if it looks pretty much the same. One of the major changes would be the upgrade to our file mirror, which now boasts 10 terabytes of space, so there's plenty of room for games, demos, screenshots, videos and patches. We also upgraded our staff, getting a whole new person to work for us, as well as a handful of new newsbots to bring you updates and good stories.
As a team, we tended to stay pretty close to home this year (other than sending representatives to eGames in Melbourne, GO3 in Perth, and BlizzCon in LA!), but we took the time to recognise the local guys with a big meetup for our Adelaide members, volunteers and gamers on the Australia Day long weekend last year. We had a whole pub to ourselves!
Overall, we must be doing something right, as every month, it seems we get bigger and bigger, with more visits, downloads and members! ...and, of course, you guys are the most important thing. Thanks for all your support, whether you're a regular visitor, someone who pops in from time to time, or just someone who keeps an eye out for interesting files in our library.
Bring on 2008 - but first, read on to find out what the admins, staff and volunteers have to say about 2007!

Following the recent creation of Activision Blizzard, discussions have re-started on the ongoing topic of "Blizzard's new MMO". Back in April, job listings on the Blizzard website suggested that they were working on a next-gen MMO, but there has still been no real statement from the developer, beyond the fact they are working on a number of varied unannounced projects.
Recently, some more jobs were posted on their website, refueling the debate. Since various Activision franchises have been added to the stable, did this mean we could look forward to World of Tony Hawk? Call of DutyCraft? Azeroth Hero?
Short answer: No. Sorry.

In a move that has shocked gamers worldwide and set the industry scrambling to update their databases, the world's #2 and #3 third-party game publishers, Vivendi Games (including WoW developers Blizzard) and Activision are set to combine in a new force - Activision Blizzard - now the world's largest "pure-play" online and console game publisher.
The deal sees Vivendi contributing their games division (valued at $8.1 billion), plus $1.7 billion in cash for a 52% stake in Activision Blizzard - making the total transaction valued at US$18.9 billion.

Remember all the fuss and noise when StarCraft II was revealed? The announcement was accompanied by several videos, including one of the Protoss gameplay.
As you all know, there are three main forces in the StarCraft world, but only one gameplay video had come out! Blizzard have evened up the stakes a bit, today releasing the Terran version of the gameplay video for your viewing pleasure.

Just because BlizzCon 07 has been and gone, it doesn't mean the end of news coming out of Blizzard!
Nono - today we have three new screenshots for you from StarCraft II, showing off... something. They're pretty, but I'm not totally sure what they are. That happens, sometimes.

One of the things I've personally been looking to most at Blizzcon is seeing more content for StarCraft II, and Blizzard thankfully did not disappoint. Both punters and media alike have had the opportunity to play both single player and multiplayer games at their 'Hands-on Gaming' zones, as well as the few terminals hidden away for us press types. Blizzard were also nice enough to present a StarCraft II live gameplay demo on the main stage on Saturday. Here they released a lot more information about both the single player campaign and the remaining Terran race.

As I sit here, watching the final moments of the BlizzCon Closing Ceremony (the orchestra, Video Games Live, is currently playing music from StarCraft II), I feel it's only fair to bring you the video footage of yesterday's Opening Ceremony.
If you didn't want to wake up so early yesterday, you can grab the 400mb video, and watch Blizzard president Mike Morhaime open the exhibition, as well as the official announcement of the new WoW expansion - the Wrath of the Lich King.

I figured it's about time I tried this liveblogging thing, so I'm awake at 3am Adelaide time, armed with hot chocolate and Vegemite crumpets, logged in to IRC so I can receive messages from UgLyPuNk and Ignant on the spot in Anaheim - and I think I'm all set to tackle the BlizzCon Opening Ceremony.
This is dedication, people. Or stupidity, they look pretty similar this time of night.
Either way - visit and refresh this post for all the latest happenings live from BlizzCon.

Just in case you were curious what exactly thousands of WoW fans will be doing this weekend, I've got a copy of the BlizzCon 2007 timetable, just for you.
Sadly, Blizzard don't drop any great bombshells, no "Diablo III Announcement" in room 204, no "Chat with the developers of Starcraft Ghost" on the Main Stage - but there's enough that should keep 'em happy for the two days of the Con.
We are curious as to why they're giving fans the ability to play World of Warcraft for two twelve-hour sessions in the Hands-On Gaming area (right next to Starcraft II)- I'd have thought that, by now, they'd know what the game was like.

A recent interview with Blizzard founding member and senior vice president of product development, Frank Pearce, has re-started the rumour mill about what fans can expect from next month's BlizzCon.
He simply stated there is a third team of devs working on a new title at the company, in addition to World of Warcraft and StarCraft II.

It is officially half way through the year, so now, rather than travelling away from Christmas last year we are travelling towards Christmas this year. We have our usual dose of Monday Screens! available for you this week. Actually there are heaps. The gnomes who work at night at Internode to host new screenshots have been extremely busy I would say. Sometimes these gnomes are known to also repair shoes, so lookout. Some titles to look out for this week. New Tales of Pirates pics. Of course, there are Starcraft II screens which will have all the fan boys drooling. And the newly announced Robert Ludlum's The Bourne Conspiracy. There are heaps of new screens this week so make sure you check them all out.

Just in case you didn't already have enough reasons to envy both UgLyPuNk and Ignant, you may now commence drooling. They've got tickets to BlizzCon, to be held in August, in California.
...so what, you say? You don't care that they'll be subjected to a bunch of WoW cosplayers? You're not fussed by the fact they'll get a free Murloc suit for their (non-existent) ingame characters?
How about the fact they'll get their hands on a playable version of StarCraft II?

I understand that the excitement about the announcment of Starcraft 2 is just starting to wear off. Gamers around the world have been collectively jumping up and down with excitement. However, after everyone's legs have been getting tired they have started asking some questions. The most important question being, "Well, when is the game coming out?" This is, literally, the million dollar question for Blizzard and they have responded with ... "when it's ready". Has this surprised anyone after the fun gamers had waiting for Burning Crusade?

I know you've been waiting impatiently the whole what... 24 hours since StarCraft II was announced. I know you've already watched and rewatched the Artwork Trailer and the Cinematic Trailer countless times... but I know that you're really waiting for a glimpse at some real gameplay.
...and - finally - we've got it. This is a fairly hefty video (the large-screen version is just under half a gigabyte), so we've given you the option of two. You can grab the 1280x720 large version, clocking in at 449mb, or else the smaller 720x404 version which is a mere 268mb.
Nothing more to say, really.

...and yes, there are StarCraft II shots.
There's also the usual ramshackle bunch of planes, boats, cars, little people, vampyres, big guns, spaceships, sparkly explosions, monkeys, tanks, scary monsters, cards, bowling balls, basketballs, baseballs, puzzles ...and robots in disguise.

Protoss, Terran, and Zerg...
All good RTS fans will know that these are the three distinct, powerful races from StarCraft, set to make a return in StarCraft II. They come with upgraded ships, brand new unit types and veteran vehicles we're all familiar with - to battle yet again for survival across the galaxy.
To continue today's rush of new information, we've got a pile of screenshots, artwork and wallpapers, as well as not one, but two videos - so take your pick - Artwork Trailer or Cinematic Trailer? ...word on the street suggests a Gameplay trailer will be landing "tomorrow", too.

Blizzard president Mike Morhaime probably put it best: "When it came time to make this announcement, it was easy to decide where it should take place." South Korea is the mecca for RTS games, with over a third of the 9.5 million copies of the original StarCraft having been sold in that country. They love it - where else could you find potato chips, drinks, stickers and phonecards dedicated to a computer game? (We'll just ignore the new World of Warcraft Visa cards, shall we?)
Anyway. Some news has come to hand as to what you might be able to expect from the sequel (remember, some of these may change closer to release date... which is somewhere unknown in the future, at this stage!)
