To celebrate Halloween, Harmonix is dumping a festering pile of undead baddies and animal corpses on the Rock Band Music Store. Sort of.
I just realised that the post title and this first sentence were a little bit misleading. What really happened is that Harmonix announced a bunch of "scary" tracks from the likes of Rob Zombie and Wolfmother in honour of All Hallows' Eve, which was nice.

Awwww, yiss. The Thin White Duke himself, David Bowie, is set to make an in-game Rock Band appearance. All my dreams are coming true!
Although, in this particular situation, we're expecting something more like the "Slightly Oblong Duke", because the title in question is Lego Rock Band. Oh. This I must see - how handy that we have some screenshots.

I don't suppose you watched the Emmy Awards? No? Pity. If you had, you might have enjoyed the spectacle of a baffled interviewer trying to cope with the appearance of NZ comedy musos, Flight of the Conchords, who had apparently broken through security to stand on the red carpet. Bret McKenzie and Jemaine Clement surprised viewers by announcing their upcoming Rock Band, when asked to comment on The Beatles: Rock Band.
Understandably, given the duo's deadpan performances, there was some speculation that the announcement was a joke, but label Sup Pop Records have confirmed the intel.

It's Music Monday, and that means I am attracted to music game news - so it's pretty handy that something more or less exciting happens in the rhythm action genre every ten and a half seconds, if you believe the press releases.
Still, I would probably have perked an ear at this one regardless of my Monday-morning need for new tunes; Pearl Jam's latest album, Backspacer, is the latest brand new release to join the select number of full studio albums to be made available via the Rock Band Store.

Did you see the Brutal Legend Rubik's Cube trailer in this week's Now Playing? Revealing details of the game's soundtrack - including over a hundred pretty terrific rock and metal tracks - brought quite a lot of applause, and comments along the lines of "now that's how all these so-called "rock" games should do it!"
Maybe somebody at Harmonix was listening, hence the sudden arrival of Rock Band add on disc, Metal Track Pack.

It seems like a bunch of new tracks is added every few days to the large selection available to Rock Band players, but apparently this is not fast enough for some people. No! They demand more music, they want it faster than Harmonix can churn it out, and they want it to come from a broader range of artists. To everyone's benefit it looks like we won't need to call the riot police out to settle the mob, as Harmonix announce the creation of the Rock Band Network, a tool that allows artists to create their own Rock Band-ready tracks and sell them alongside the Harmonix-authored offerings.

Gamers who enjoy Rock Band will soon be able to turn their guitar amps up to 11, and continually search for new drummers who are the unfortunate victims of spontaneous combustion, and other causes of death, as Spinal Tap invades the Rock Band music store on the 16th of June.
Four tracks from Spinal Tap will be added to the Rock Band library, three of them from the band's new album, Back from the Dead - the final track will be a previously unreleased track that has only been made available via the band's website.
In addition to Spinal Tap, a trio of tracks from pop-rock band, Evanescence will arrive, making it a pretty decent week for Rock Band DLC, hot on the heels of a recent Iron Maiden track pack.

Those who are fond of the Guitar Hero series often have many things to say about the plastic peripherals that are packaged with the games. These things usually aren't all that good, and the ears of Logitech have picked this up, today announcing the Black Edition of its Wireless Guitar Controller that is compatible with the PlayStation 3 and 2 platforms.
The controller isn't a simple replacement. It is for "gamers who want to play like a rock star", and sports a wooden neck, a rosewood fret board, and metal frets, much like you'd expect on a decent real guitar.

The format, however has not yet been revealed, as it is currently unclear as to whether we will see a Pearl Jam centric game, more downloadable content, or an add-on pack that is released to retail.

The content will be available on all three platforms, with it to be made available for purchase as individual tracks and a pack on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, and each of the individual tracks from the album available on their own on the Nintendo Wii.

Konami are yet to make their first massive jump into the rythym game market this generation, with Rock Revolution set to launch in Australia in June this year. That hasn't stopped them from planning their next steps in the genre, with the announcement of Karaoke Revolution, which should be released in time for the Christmas buying rush.
Karaoke Revolution will include 50 "all-new" hit songs that will be derived from licensed master recordings. Players will be able to perform these at 16 "original" venues, which can also be customised, along with characters, which will be blessed with new facial and body morphing animation systems.
The main point, however, of Karaoke Revolution, is to makemoney the game as accessible as possible, with the title to transform the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and the Nintendo Wii into "high end interactive karaoke machines", which can be the much-lauded subjects of drunken social gatherings and awkward get-togethers with colleagues and associates.

While Australian pricing hasn't yet been announced, the pricing for the "limited edition premium bundle", first revealed today has been announced for the UK, US, and other European territories. The "limited edition premium bundle" will feature a number of shiny, exclusive features that won't be found in (presumably) the "regular" bundle of instruments, along with "additional special content", which is likely to be assorted Beatles paraphernalia.

One of the big criticisms of the Wii is that it is filled with crappy mini-game collections. There’s always someone who will challenge this claim, but this week’s release schedule should be enough to silence them, with no less than four mini-game compilations hitting the Nintendo console. With recent news that Sony's PlayStation Portable had sold fifty million units world wide, many PSP owners looked in dismay at the release schedules for upcoming games on the platform - after having glanced at their game collection with an enigmatic sigh. While there is a large number of quality software titles on the platform - it is no secret that the console needs more blockbusters.
Today Sony Computer Entertainment, in partnership with third party publishers, have announced a staggering array of new titles for their portable platform, each which will be optimised for the console's portability.
This year, the PSP will see MotorStorm: Arctic Edge, a portable version of Little Big Planet, a game based in the Assassin's Creed universe, and the transition of Rock Band to the platform, along with more support from EA and other publishers on the platform.

Isn't it odd how certain genres of games rise and fall in popularity? In the nineties nearly every game seemed to be a platformer or a fighter; right now, the FPS seems to have declared itself King Of All Platforms. A paradigm shift usually sends whoever's at the top hurtling into obscurity as gamers react to the over-saturation of the market - but the old rhythm action genre, which had itself a bit of a frenzy starting with the PSOne, is still hanging on, and indeed enjoying something of a Renaissance. The latest title to catch my eye is Scratch: The Ultimate DJ, which set you up as, you guessed it, a budding DJ.

The end of the year is typically the time for roundups and recaps, summing up the year past - but sometimes, it takes a little while longer to compile all the information, bumping the news to the new year. This is the case with the official Xbox 360 Top 20 LIVE Games of 2008 list, which has just been announced.
We have here the list of both the the Original Xbox and Xbox 360 Top Live Titles (both lists based on unique users), as well as the Top Arcade Titles (based on full versions purchased). Not sure if there's any real surprises here (hello, Halo), but it is interesting to note the number of demos in the list that are not accompanied by the full game.

What will you remember 2008 for, in terms of gaming?
We asked some of the game admins and network staff to find out their thoughts, but here's a quick recap of the past 12 months, to refresh your memory.
Non-games dominated this year's charts, with Wii Fit rewarding gamers for standing still. As a country, we were still fans of the music game genre too, finally getting our hands on Rock Band, which seemed to have been pushed onto shelves by the release of Guitar Hero: World Tour a week later. Who knows, the full-band version may even have healed some hurt caused by the "interesting" yet awkward Guitar Hero: On Tour release for DS. There was a new Call of Duty to heed, a new Bond to meet, Marcus and Dom were back, and independent developers twisted our brains with Braid and our rhythm skills with Audiosurf. Red Alert was back, and we revisited the Midnight Club. We also saw the release of the "Three Fs" - Far Cry 2, Fable 2, and Fallout 3, meaning many gamers were a bit strapped for cash by the end of the year.
...and, who could forget? 2008 is the year we met Sackboy!

Hold on to your flannel shirts, Rock Band fans - looks like we've got some more awesome news on incoming Rock Band DLC. Apparently they're timing this to coincide with a re-release of the album that's also intended to hit music stores on the 24th of that month.
While "Alive" is already available in Rock Band 2, the rest of the album will be added to the Xbox Live network so you can download and play them in either version of Rock Band. These are the top five Guitar Heroes from around Victoria (well, the top five who made it to the show, anyway), and we've captured their stage performances in glorious moving pictures for your visual enjoyment. If you're a budding rockstar, maybe you could pick up some ideas about what works... and maybe a few about what doesn't!

Many thought it couldn't be done; that Rock Band having 500 songs by the end of the year was unlikely to happen. Harmonix and MTV Games proved them wrong, managing to get 500 songs out the door between the combined tracks on Rock Band and Rock Band 2 and by adding in tons of downloadable content for both the Xbox 360 and PS3. Now with the addition of the No Doubt "The Singles 1992-2003" collection, they've not only made their 500 mark, but beaten it with a few weeks left to go in the year.

Rock Band took a long time to officially make it to Australian shores, when this occurred, the sequel was already available in the United States, making it one of the most staggered regional release dates in recent history. In spite of this - Rock Band offers one distinct advantage over its competitor - a huge library of downloadable content.
The latest downloadable tracks packs featuring The Killers and Yngwie Malmsteen. Other artists will see further tracks made available, including Soundgarden and Lamb of God. US and European markets will see the tracks released on the 25th of November, and Australian audiences should see them the next time console marketplaces are updated.

The Holiday flood begins this Thursday with the release of an ungodly amount of games, including Brothers in Arms: Hell’s Highway, Crysis Warhead and Wipeout HD, and doesn’t stop until the week before Christmas. To save you all a bit of time, I like to run through the release list at the start of a given quarter, and make sweeping generalisations as to the quality of upcoming games.
Last week’s Warp Pipe covered the games of October, so this week we’re looking at November’s big hitters, including Gears of War 2, Left 4 Dead and Mirror’s Edge.

We all know that Guitar Hero: World Tour is going to be pretty big. The next major console release from the franchise will see the expansion of the game to now include guitars, drums and vocals - and, while the rest of the world hasn't been told when they'll get their hands on it, we can confirm that Australians are set to get the full package on November 12, 2008.
The announcement was made at an Activision press event held in New Zealand, with the company promising dates for the rest of the world soon.
As if that wasn't enough rock for one event, four new songs have also been announced from the tracklist, including local lads, The Living End.

Harmonix and MTV Games have revealed the track list for Rock Band 2. With over 80 songs on the disc itself and an additional 20 bonus tracks available for free download around the same time.
While we haven't seen Rock Band yet (let alone a release date), this track list is truly amazing, its almost unbelievable. But that could just be the fact that Guns N' Roses are debuting their new track "Shackler's Revenge" from their (forever) upcoming album Chinese Democracy (an album that has been coming out longer than the next Duke Nukem game) on Rock Band 2.

Sure we haven't seen the original in Australia yet, but that hasn't stopped Harmonix and MTV from announcing the debut of Rock Band 2, scheduled for a September release in the US exclusively on Xbox 360 (with other platforms coming later).
Boasting more music, online modes and features than ever before, the game will also include "new and improved" drum and guitar peripherals. That was all pretty much to be expected - but the big announcement that the entire Rock Band downloadable content music catalogue from the first game will be totally compatible with Rock Band 2 still came as a pleasant surprise.

Yes, it's about Rock Band. While there's still no apparent sign of the game ever gracing Australian shores, those gamers who are blessed by geography are currently rocking out to two of the best song packs to hit the networks.
Firstly, the three-song Weezer Pack 01, including Dreamin', The Greatest Man That Ever Lived, and Troublemaker, all from this year's self-titled album (the red one).
Secondly (and more painfully), the Doolittle album from The Pixies has just been made available, too.

"Hero", as defined by the Oxford English Dictionary, is "an individual who possesses great courage or nobility". The term is traditionally applied to a character who has performed epic deeds within a fantasy world - and it's often puzzled me how someone on stage wielding a plastic guitar can be considered to have the same status.
Regardless of my personal protests at elevating musicians to a status of heroes, the Guitar Hero series of games has been highly successful, and is an easy way to simulate the failed dreams of grandeur many of us have wished for when picking up a real guitar.
While it doesn't compare to the real thing, it's close enough right? Today we've got some details for you regarding the all new Guitar Hero game (no, it's not Guitar Hero: Aerosmith). Guitar Hero 4, now dubbed Guitar Hero: World Tour (similar in name to the upcoming DS version, Guitar Hero: On Tour) will introduce a crowd-pleasing list of new features and will expand upon the Guitar Hero universe.

The weeks seem to be flying by at an incredible pace, which is a good thing given how many highly highly-anticipated video games are released before the end of the quarter. When you're playing rubbish like Turning Point: Fall of Liberty, though, some days seem eternally long. Things do balance out, as I unexpectedly lost a large number of hours to Condemned 2's online multiplayer. It's very rare that an online game grabs hold of me – I think that the last one was the Day of Defeat 1.3 Beta.
The Condemned 2 online experience did leave me particularly sour about some aspects of Microsoft's online service, inspiring this week's main topic. To round out the column, we'll revisit Harmonix's pre-Guitar Hero effort, Amplitude and play the one of the worst games on the Master System in the form of The Flintstones.

You may have heard of that little Rock Band game that the Americans are happily playing a lot of these days, you know - the one that's nowhere near Australia just yet?

News has been spreading from Harmonix about extra content available for Rock Band. Previously with downloadable song packs, if you only wanted one song you needed to buy the whole pack (I'm looking at you Guitar Hero). Rock Band, however, has done away with this and will allow people after only 1 song in the pack to purchase that (or all of it if that's your fancy).
They have also been talking about letting 'garage bands' into the mix by using development tools to record their songs as game tracks. Sounds like a good idea to get more people into it, as well as giving up and coming bands and good foot in the door.

So. The second webcast for my E3 2007 experience was the Microsoft E3 Press Conference, from Santa Monica High School. It was a lengthy presentation and full of all sorts of interesting information - so I'm breaking it up into bitesize pieces for easy digestion. I'm nice like that.
Anyway - if you'd tuned in to the live stream yesterday, you would have been treated to Peter Moore, head of Microsoft's Interactive Entertainment Business division playing Rock Band on stage with some of the developers from Harmonix. It was, perhaps, the worst version of Main Offender (originally by The Hives) that I have ever seen. You should perhaps be grateful that you missed it.
In other news, though, all of the games shown as part of the conference will be available (at least in North America) by the end of the year.

Nothing says that a new genre has come full circle like brand name placement on peripherals. We have seen it in racing circles for a while. The Momo or Ferrari name on steering peripherals for racing games. Unfortunately, the placement of high profile brand names is no guarantee of quality. Sometimes, it also means that you have to pay a premium for a product as well. The new Rock Band game which is being developed by Harmonix is going to have three major brand names adorning their three rock band peripherals.
