Coming Attractions - 26/10/2009
We're at the end of October, but the Q4 release season still has plenty to offer. This week's big release is Grand Theft Auto IV: The Ballad of Gay Tony, which will be available alone on the Xbox Live Marketplace, or together with The Lost and Damned add-on in disc form. Also of note this week is the PC release of Borderlands, the life consuming Football Manager 2010, DJ Hero and a couple of Dragon Ball games.

Each week, we collate the most popular stories that we published over the past seven days, plus a lineup of the most downloaded files added in the same timeframe. That way, in case you missed something, you can catch up in one helpful little spot, every Monday morning.

Last week, it was all about how much Activision and Infinity Ward have failed us, with Modern Warfare 2 absolutely dominating the news, for all the wrong reasons. As if to illustrate just how PC gaming in Australia is all sunshine and rainbows, we also found out that the uncut version of Left 4 Dead 2 will not be released in Australia. Last week wasn't all that "fun" for PC gamers on the news front, so let us hope that this week will bring some good news.

GTA IV world record broken to general applause
World Records of much interest, even when they involve video games, and even when those games are awesome. But when somebody plays Grand Theft Auto IV for forty hours straight and is practically awarded a medal for it, I start wondering where to sign up.

Chirantan Patnaik of Mumbai is the proud owner of the new record, and has received flattering media attention for his patriotic endeavours and healthy lifestyle. No, really!

Coming Attractions - 19/10/09
It seems as though this week's schedule is a little subdued compared to others so far this release season. All eyes will likely be fixed on Borderlands and Forza Motorsport 3, which both hit on Friday, but if you've got a bit of spare time and a DS handy, check out Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story and Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days. Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising is also due out this week, though retail spies tell me that it may have already snuck out.

Wii own you: Nintendo snatch top sales this decade
The games PR industry, like any other, just loves numbers. Nearly every day I receive some abused statistics, usually along the lines of "our game sold more than any other title between three and four in the morning last Thursday!" or "our game sold this many copies!" with no mention of time frame or comparable milestones.

More reliable are reports from the various territory sales-tracking services, and this one from the US NPD is enough to make me swallow reflexively. The Nintendo Wii is the happy owner of three of the top fives selling games this decade.

Grand Theft Auto IV - A special, Weazel News report
Satire is a great thing. Don't believe me? This new trailer for the upcoming Episodes of Liberty City is a shining example of it. Not only do we have a masterfully crafted satire of the mass media contained within it, but also some new information regarding new(!) features that will launch in the latest downloadable content for Grand Theft Auto IV, The Ballad of Gay Tony.

The Ballad of Gay Tony is due to release on the 29th of October, and will be available through the Xbox LIVE Marketplace, and at retail, in a specially crafted package that does not require the original Grand Theft Auto IV to run. It will be available only on the Xbox 360.

Grand Theft Auto: The Ballad of Gay Tony gets a new trailer
Those of you who can't get enough of Grand Theft Auto IV should, by now, be aware of the fact that Rockstar are preparing some new downloadable content (for Xbox 360 owners), The Ballad of Gay Tony.

Today, we've been given a new trailer that introduces the man to us. We now know this - his full name is Tony Prince, and his life is full of organised crime, making him perfect for the game. The new trailer shows off very little actual gameplay, but is thankfully quite serious in its content, unlike certain other trailers we have seen recently.

Triptych - Volume 14: Pilfer, Purloin, Plunder
Here we are once again in the world of Triptych, the weekly feature that wonders why the world makes it so difficult to find information on any but a handful of massively hyped titles, and then remembers it’s because all the decent releases are overlooked by gamers attempting to avoid the masses of shovelware loaded into retailers every day.

It’s a nasty combination, and you know what? It makes me feel like I’ve been robbed. That’s right. The hype machine, cheap-and-nasty-developers, and the indifference of general gaming culture all conspire to steal from me the opportunity to experience new and exciting gaming experiences. Luckily, Triptych is here, like some over-zealous burglar alarm that goes off when you drop a heavy box too close to the front door, to blow the whistle and deliver a trio of neglected titles, which this week centres on the theme of stealing.

Grand Theft Auto IV - Ballad of Gay Tony gets happy in new trailer
I'm not sure about you guys, but when it comes to downloadable content, I usually purchase it, download it, and then do nothing. While that probably isn't what I'm supposed to do... when it comes to Grand Theft Auto IV, I'd imagine that even the most cynical people stop to actually play the content that they've purchased.

To entice us to do both things, Rockstar have provided us with a fancy trailer for the new Grand Theft Auto IV downloadable content, The Ballad of Gay Tony, which is due for release in October, only on the Xbox 360.

In addition to the new trailer, they've also sent us some shiny new screenshots, too.

The Warp Pipe - 26/07/09
The video game industry has come far in the last thirty years, but we still can’t shake the perception that everything needs to be released in the fourth quarter of the year. It has gotten better, particularly in the last two years where heavy hitters like Grand Theft Auto IV, Resident Evil 5 and Super Smash Bros. Brawl were released in the first half of the year. Q4 2009 is still stacked with high profile titles, some of which will inevitably be overlooked in favour of Halo 3: ODST, Modern Warfare 2 and Assassin’s Creed 2.

This week, The Warp Pipe is going to shed a bit of light on titles which are deserving of your attention this year, but are at risk of being lost in the Q4 shuffle.

The Warp Pipe - 05/07/09
When you spend most of your gameplay hours wrangling new release games for review, you do not typically get the opportunity to sit down and soak up the atmosphere to the same extent as a regular player does. Once those end credits roll, you’re onto the next one; sometimes a cause of frustration, particularly when the summer movie season is in full swing and rushed licensed titles are piling up on your desk, leaving you totally jaded. Sometimes you just need to step back from it all and remember what you enjoy about the hobby.

This week, we’ll look at a few of those little things that we really like in video games.

The Warp Pipe - 28/06/09
Lately, the Warp Pipe has been looking to the past for its gaming fix, rather than getting wrapped up in the present or worrying about the future. Perhaps it’s as a result of a strict regimen of movie tie-ins and yearly sequels on the review plate, or something to kill the time between E3 and the holiday season – I don’t really care enough to sit around and think about it. Whatever the cause is, I have retro fever, and have it bad.

This week, we’re going to take a look at the three incarnations of Michael Jackson’s Moonwalker.

Australian plans to block online video games
Just when you thought the censorship situation in Australia couldn't get any worse, it goes and does - in spectacular fashion. News out today suggests that the Federal Government will use the impending internet censorship regime to also block websites that host or sell video games that have not been considered appropriate for Australian audiences.

That means, given our current legislation and lack of an R18+ adult rating, if a game is inappropriate for a 15 year old, it's unsuitable for release in this country. This law, which makes us the only developed country without such a classification, has previously only applied to local gaming emporiums selling physical copies of the game, but it seems a spokesperson for Communications Minister Stephen Conroy has come out and explained that under the new plans, the ban will extend to sites which sell physical or downloadable copies of the games, free downloadable titles and even flash-based web releases, if they have not been appropriately classified in this country.

Substitute "shaking" for shooting, "baby" for "human being", and "iPhone app" for "video game", and you could be reading any article on the rights and wrongs of one portion of society's ability to impose its values and opinions on all others.

2008 - a year in review
What will you remember 2008 for, in terms of gaming?

We asked some of the game admins and network staff to find out their thoughts, but here's a quick recap of the past 12 months, to refresh your memory.

Non-games dominated this year's charts, with Wii Fit rewarding gamers for standing still. As a country, we were still fans of the music game genre too, finally getting our hands on Rock Band, which seemed to have been pushed onto shelves by the release of Guitar Hero: World Tour a week later. Who knows, the full-band version may even have healed some hurt caused by the "interesting" yet awkward Guitar Hero: On Tour release for DS. There was a new Call of Duty to heed, a new Bond to meet, Marcus and Dom were back, and independent developers twisted our brains with Braid and our rhythm skills with Audiosurf. Red Alert was back, and we revisited the Midnight Club. We also saw the release of the "Three Fs" - Far Cry 2, Fable 2, and Fallout 3, meaning many gamers were a bit strapped for cash by the end of the year.
...and, who could forget? 2008 is the year we met Sackboy!

Perhaps that hype will be sparked by this shiny new PC trailer we've found? To the naked eye, the graphics look to be about on par with the console versions of the title. It does look a *little* dated compared to the latest and greatest PC gaming experiences, but hey, graphics aren't everything...

Madworld beckons ''hardcore'' gamers to Wii
We haven't reported on it so far, so you may be unaware that there has been some doubt over the release of violent Wii title Madworld. When Timmy first checked the title out in July, his wondering comment was "Why can I see this being banned?" and indeed, Madworld, which is being described as "ultra-violent" and "over the top", is causing a spate of pessimism in gamers, and may not be released in Japan, despite being the baby of Sega Japan. However, we can confirm that Sega Australia have no such qualms, and fully intend to foist Madworld on an unsuspecting, but likely overjoyed, public.

Take-Two will remain independent following review
Following recent news that EA had dropped all plans to acquire industry heavy-weight Take-Two, Strauss Zelnick and his board have announced that they've completed a review of strategic alternatives for the company.

Take-Two, the parent company of Rockstar Games and the 2K Games label have announced that it is in their best interests to continue operation as an independent company, after looking over alternatives.

Truck stolen along with $1.4 million in games
It really reads like the plot of a Grand Theft Auto mission, especially if you consider events from the perpetrator's point of view. After getting into position, you wait patiently for the driver to stop for a cup of coffee before making a dash for it and driving off with a truck packed full of video games. The cops are swiftly on your tail, so you abandon the truck and leg it. Shortly afterwards, with a countdown timer ticking, you break into the police compound where your booty is stashed, awaiting the collection of fingerprinting and DNA evidence, make off with the goods for a second time, unload your precious cargo and dump the empty truck in a car park. Surely that never happens in the real world?

Street Fighter IV - two new trailers pull many punches
Street Fighter IV is probably the most anticipated fighting game now that Soulcalibur IV has been released. It would appear that Capcom are aware of this, releasing a teaser trailer, presenting some of the back story of the the game. In addition, a trailer depicting a fight between two characters has also made its way onto the mirror.

This year has seen a flurry of "fourths", with Metal Gear Solid 4, Grand Theft Auto 4, and the DS remake of Final Fantasy IV. While it is still unclear exactly when Street Fighter IV will barge its way into our homes for some button-mashing madness, the new trailers should entertain those waiting for the game.

The Warp Pipe - 21/09/08
The Holiday flood begins this Thursday with the release of an ungodly amount of games, including Brothers in Arms: Hell’s Highway, Crysis Warhead and Wipeout HD, and doesn’t stop until the week before Christmas. To save you all a bit of time, I like to run through the release list at the start of a given quarter, and make sweeping generalisations as to the quality of upcoming games.

Last week’s Warp Pipe covered the games of October, so this week we’re looking at November’s big hitters, including Gears of War 2, Left 4 Dead and Mirror’s Edge.

EA drops plans to acquire Take-Two
As you may know, for the past six months or so, a little company called Electronic Arts has been trying to acquire another little company, Take-Two (parent of 2K Games and Rockstar Games, for those of you playing at home). It's been a fairly lengthy, drawn-out saga that started friendly, got hostile, seemed to be friendly again, extended a few deadlines, and - as of today - looks like it's all over, and not in the way you might expect.

EA have made statements to the press, stating that "after careful consideration", the publishers have decided to drop their proposal, terminating take-over discussions.

Take-Two have responded, mentioning that they are "actively engaged" in discussions with other parties, and are considering "strategic alternatives".

The Warp Pipe - 14/09/08
2008 has been a little different from the standard industry year, in that we’ve seen a lot of major titles released outside of the holiday shopping season. Mario Kart Wii, Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Grand Theft Auto IV and Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots were all released in the first half of the year. One would think that that might make for a less than stellar holiday line up, but the game publishers of the world (bar Nintendo) are inclined to prove otherwise.

Over the next two weeks (due to the sheer number of releases), The Warp Pipe will be boldly predicting the quality of new games in the next quarter.

GTA4: Now teaching kids to save lives?

On August 27th, 11-year-old Audrey Plique was riding with her family in their Jeep, when it suddenly swerved off the road, and flipped four times. When the car came to rest, young Audrey quickly managed to get her brother, sister and parents out of the car, as she knew that "when a car rolls over, it can blow up." Where did she get this knowledge? Playing Grand Theft Auto.

Grand Theft Auto IV - a PC postcard from Liberty City
While it's not quite E3, the annual Games Convention, held in Leipzig, Germany, is considered by many to be the world's biggest games show - and who are we to argue? So many great - and unexpected - things have already come out of this year's Convention, and it's only a day old.

The next big thing to have arrived on our desks is a packet of images, postmarked Deutschland via Liberty City. It's the first-look screenshots for the PC version of Grand Theft Auto, currently under development by Rockstar North and due for release in November.

Australian Weekly Video Game Charts - Week Ending 27/07/08
I'm waiting for confirmation on a few other exciting bits and pieces this morning - but in the meantime, we have another exciting episode of... the Australian Weekly Video Game Charts! Yay! Let's see what our fellow gamers were buying in the week ending July 27th... and they're mainly Nintendo fans this week. The top 10 has six motion-sensing titles, three DS games and one poor little PS2 in the middle.

We're mere hours away from the start of the Olympic games, and it seems that a plumber and a hedgehog are getting in early, with some handheld action. The PC has again been overrun by simulated people while the Xbox 360 and PS3 languish in Liberty City. The Wii itself is a bit blocky in outer space, the PS2 is having a singing party, and the PSP is working on its robotic spy skills.

Australian Weekly Video Game Charts - Week Ending 20/07/08
In all the recent fuss, the poor video game charts were on a piece of paper that got lost on my desk! I've found them today though, so I can tell you all about who was topping the game sales in Australia for the week ending 20th July. Perhaps more eloquently, I can tell you who was not topping the game sales - the Xbox 360, which does not appear in the overall top 10 at all, which instead features four Wii titles, three DS, two PS3 and a lonely PS2 game snuck in there, too. Interesting.

Again, the majority of Australian gamers were out in force, snapping up copies of a smashing Wii brawler. The PC fans are heeding the call of a modern war, Xbox 360 and PS3 are hanging out in Liberty City (...more on Sony's side though, it seems), the PS2 is eating bamboo with its new fighting friend, DS owners are still testing their mental capacities, and the PSP has run into a robotic secret agent!

Saints Row 2 rated in Australia, GTA IV appealed in NZ
While it seems that a lot of the news involving video games and the Classifications Board is fairly negative, detailing just which games you won't be able to buy in this country, today we've got some news that will turn the tides a bit.

THQ are pleased to announce that their upcoming sequel, Saints Row 2 has been granted an MA15+ rating (due to strong violence, sexual references and coarse language), meaning anyone in Australia over the age of 15 will be able to purchase the game unrestricted when it hits our shores on October 16th.

Even better? The publishers have confirmed that the game has not been edited for the Australian market!

Ah, back to reality with the solid tradition of the charts post. After spending a week concentrating on games that are yet to arrive on these shores, it's refreshing to note that people are still buying - and enjoying - games that were announced at last year's E3 - or even before!

This week, everybody is playing one of the highlights of last year's summit, with the Wii taking a brawling top spot. The PC is off buying more simulated flat pack furniture, Xbox 360 and PS3 are still lounging in Liberty City and the PS2 is having a party with lots of singing. While the DS has revisted Professor Kawashima, the PSP remains trapped in a final, fantastic, crisis!

Australian Weekly Video Game Charts - Week Ending 06/07/08
Looking at this week's charts, I can't help but wonder if the recent spate of toy sales around the country have impacted on what's being bought. Things have changed considerably since last week, with the DS and Wii very prominent in the overall charts, and EA's person-simulator wreaking havoc on the PC side of things. Do you have any ideas why this could be?

To recap, this week sees Australian gamers again behind a little motion-sensitive wheel, with a plumber. The PC's hanging out with its simulated friends, while both Xbox 360 and PS3 have returned to Liberty City after a short break. The PS2 is singing up a storm at a party, with the DS providing some musically educational accompaniment, and the PSP is stuck in its final, critical, fantasy.

The Warp Pipe - 29/06/08
This weekend marks the midway point of 2008, a milestone which has either come very slowly or out of nowhere, depending on your perception of time and space. I find myself in the latter group, stuck in a state of mind where it's March or April, largely out of desperation for some warm weather. Most of my recent time has been spent wrestling a Metal Gear Solid 4 review, which you'll see on the site soon, and the new Alone in the Dark game, which has some promising concepts destroyed by wretched controls and a multitude of glitches.

With the midway point reached, I thought I'd take the time this week to look back at the major events and releases of the first six months of the year.

Apocalypse averted, the world has been restored to rights and the best-selling MMORPG on the planet is back to where it belongs, solidly at the top of the PC charts. Oh, happy day (...at least it knocked off those simulated people, right?).

Other than that, the majority of Australians are still flocking to hang out with Snake. PC gamers - obviously - have made a welcome return to Azeroth, while the Xbox 360 fans prefer Liberty City. The motion-sensing Wii crowd are playing, the PS2 is still made of archeological blocks, the DS is full of pocket monsters exploring time, and the PSP is experiencing a critical final fantasy.

Average gamer will spend US$30,000 on games during their life
One only need to look at the launch sales of GTA IV (as per Draqul's recent article) to see video games as a significant portion of the entertainment industry. Several reports have popped up around the Internet following the results of a survey conducted by GameStrata.

The survey examines the financial commitment of a 30 year gaming lifetime, which generally encompasses the 'peak' gaming years, 18-48. During this time, the average gamer will spend $US30,000 on video games, or gaming related hardware.

Barry Dorf, COO of GameStrata has referenced claims by financial forecasters that 'this year's sales [of games or related hardware] will reach nearly US$23 billion.' Dorf added: 'in spite of predictions of a sluggish economy, gamers continue to invest their time and money into electronic entertainment.'

Grand Theft Auto IV containing a somewhat rich multiplayer (or so I've been told) component, many people have had their online experience plagued by bugs.

Rockstar have noticed, and recently identified a few issues with their game, and as a result have released a patch to fix up some bugs. This is the second patch for GTAIV, and should now be available to all Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 owners via their respective online networks.

It's back to regular Warp Pipe programming after another pair of retrospectives. After two series retrospectives in about six weeks, I'm a little worn out on the concept; fortunately, there is little in the way of major franchise releases coming out this year (that we know of), so I should be able to take a decent break. I spent some of my newfound free time checking out the Game On exhibit at ACMI – it's quite a good little show, and it's still running for another month, so Melbourne readers who haven't checked it out should do so as soon as possible.

This week, we look at the issue of quality in licensed products intended for children, revisit the 1994 classic Street Fighter: The Movie, and introduce a new section called Flawed Masterpieces, which looks at games that fell just short of being classics.

Let's crack open the record books and see what games everybody's buying this week. There's been a bit of a shakeup, with a brand new #1 overall, and a PC chart thoroughly dominated by The Sims - 7 of the 10 spots are taken up by that franchise, so thank you, Mass Effect, for breaking up the monotony! The PS2 charts are similarly dominated, by both SingStar and Buzz, and the PSP charts have seen an upset - someone's beat Kratos!

In more detailed news this week, the majority of Australian gamers are hurtling around a cartoon track, throwing turtle shells at each other. The PC is in Hyboria, punching camels, while PS3 and Xbox 360 still prefer to spend time in Liberty City - and PS2 gamers (and both handhelds) are spending all their time in the jungle, with a blocky archaeologist.

Well folks, the slide has started. The game that snagged the record for Highest Revenue Generated by an Entertainment Product in 24 Hours is less exciting than a collection of minigames that are designed to show off a controller, if the latest charts re to be believed. They also suggest that while realism and violence are fun, it's more fun to be a cartoon and throw turtle shells at each other.

In the charts this week, Australians are still flocking in massive numbers to buy a game that rewards you for standing perfectly still, PC gamers are dedicating a lot of their time to adventures in Hyboria, PS3 and Xbox 360 prefer to hang out in Liberty City, the PS2 is singing along with some party hits, the DS has returned to a tuneful high school (again), and the PSP... well, it's still spending too much time with Kratos. Ah, more of the same here, really. Apparently Wii Play is more popular than GTA IV on the PS3. Who'd-a-thunk?

There has also been an interesting development in the DS game charts. Did you know that Hannah Montana is played by Miley Cyrus, who is Billy Ray Cyrus's daughter? Yep, the Achy Breaky Heart guy apparently got over his little upset and has fathered a child, who - fortunately - seems to have avoided the family mullet, and can actually sing.

Anyway. The top games for this week are a little interesting - Australians like standing perfectly still in front of their televisions, PC gamers prefer to get drunk and punch camels, our Xbox 360 and PS3 brethren are still hangin' out in Liberty City, PS2 gamers continue to heroically rock out, the DS seems popular with all-singing, all-dancing tween-age girls, and the PSP is still stuck on that bit where Kratos does that thing...

After last week's little shakeup, the most recent version of the Australian Weekly Video Game Charts is pretty non-exciting. I was tempted just to relabel the last edition and put them up again, so very little has changed.

Apparently, the general Australian Public is more interested in exercising in front of a tv than running around Liberty City - although Niko's adventures still top both the PS3 and Xbox 360 charts. PS2 gamers are heroically rockin' out, DS gamers prefer to give their minds some more exercise, and the PSP is still wrestling with Spartan chains.

The Warp Pipe - 25/05/08
It's just been one of those weeks here at The Warp Pipe, where it was almost impossible to sit down and actually work. For some unknown reason, LEGO Star Wars II: The Original Trilogy sank its teeth into me, and wouldn't let go until I completely finished everything in the game. It's the first platformer/action hybrid that I've got 100% in for a couple of years, so it's left me feeling pretty good. It also helped wash out the awful aftertaste left by Looney Tunes: Acme Arsenal. While I mourn the loss of animation pioneers like Chuck Jones, Tex Avery and Friz Freleng, I'm glad they're not alive to see what Warner Bros. has done to their creations.

Gamers Violent Psychopaths? New Study Says... no?
Since the recent release of GTA IV and the subsequent media furore, I've found myself more and more frequently dragged into discussions on violence in video games and the effect it has on gamers, especially children and young adults. I'm often surprised by how vehement and vocal non-gamers can be on this topic, despite knowing next to nothing about the titles they're flaming. It doesn't help that often those of us most likely to dive into the debate have difficulty expressing our arguments clearly; we're gamers, and I suspect that too much time in front of the keyboard causes linguistic degradation. Luckily, a new piece of research has come along that champions our cause.

Australian Weekly Video Game Charts - Week Ending 11/05/08
Well. It is often a source of amusement for people that Australian video game buyers are notoriously slow when it comes to picking up "highly-anticipated" games. In many places, a major game release is #1 for a week or two after release, and then quickly disappears from view - but in Australia, the big names float around near the top of the charts for months after its hit shelves.

Interesting to note then, that the most eagerly-awaited title of the year has already slipped from top spot - to be replaced by a "non-game" that awards points based on how well you can stand perfectly still.

That's right, the Australian public loves to improve their fitness with a video game, while PC gamers are still playing digital kitchen/bathroom decorators, the 360 and the PS3 are left behind in Liberty City, PS2 is playing a few rockin' shows, DS gamers enjoy some more cranial exercise, and the PSP is still struggling under those weighty chains.

Further to holo's story of last Thursday, Guiness World Records have just announced that GTA IV has officially smashed two World Records. One of them, while extremely impressive, is not that surprising in light of the figures holo reported- those 3.6 million copies sold on launch day have generated a staggering US$310 million in the first 24 hours after release. Predictably, GTA IV has ousted Halo 3, with its comparably mere US$170 million, from the top position of Highest Grossing Video Game in 24 Hours and stolen the title for itself. But wait! One thing I've found particularly surprising over the last week was the rate at which my interest in Grand Theft Auto IV rapidly declined. I beat the game on Sunday night, yet haven't felt compelled to turn it back on since, which is strange, given how much I had enjoyed it. It's really lacking that level of supplementary content we saw in Vice City and San Andreas; much more effort went into the story, and the game is better for it, but I'd have liked more to do after the narrative was wrapped up.

This week's column is the final part of our Grievances series, focusing on Sony. We'll also take a look at the godawful Survivor game from late last decade, and give Guinness World Records' 2008 Gamers Edition the review treatment.

So we return to regular Warp Pipe programming. It hasn't been that long since I did a regular column, but it feels like ages - the GTA articles (one, two, three) turned out to be a little more work than I thought they'd be, but I'm happy with the result. I took a little time off writing over the last week, tucking into Viking: Battle for Asgard and a few awful EA Sports games to push my Xbox 360 gamerscore past the 50,000 mark. Passing that mark seems to have killed my enthusiasm for the system at this point. Of course, I've also spent a bunch of time with Grand Theft Auto IV; it's a good game, possibly even great, but I've yet to see the things that are encouraging other reviewers to give it perfect scores, so I seem to be expecting it to pick up at some point.

The Warp Pipe Special Edition - Grand Theft Auto Retrospective Part 3 - 27/04/08
Last Sunday and Wednesday, we brought you the first two parts of this rather large Grand Theft Auto series retrospective. It's certainly been a learning experience for me; I've learnt a lot about the behind the scenes stuff, the foundation of DMA and how it got to be where it is today, but I also learnt a thing or two about planning and scheduling articles, keeping to word limits and so on. It took a lot longer to complete the task than I had intended, and damned if I just didn't want to pack it in and rediscover Vice City, or fly a Harrier Jet through the high rise buildings in San Fierro. After seeing a few videos that have snuck their way onto the web in the last few days, I have to say that I have not been this excited for a new game for quite a long time.

The first part of our feature looked at the early days of Grand Theft Auto, while the second part covered the three most successful entries into the series. The final part of the feature will look at the portable GTA games, Hot Coffee, and ask a few questions about the future of the series.

Normally on the Warp Pipe, we have a bit of a bit of a look at things affecting the current gaming environment, visit the games of days past and other obscure things, occasionally having a laugh or two along the way. For the last 10 weeks, I have been getting settled in and everyone seems pretty happy with the way things are going. It has taken a little bit of adjustment going from writing a column each month to writing one each week, but I enjoy the challenge.

We have always intended to deliver different types of content on the Warp Pipe, so to mix things up a bit, for the next two weeks - including a special mid-week edition - we will be doing a retrospective on the Grand Theft Auto series, just in time for the release of Grand Theft Auto IV on the 29th.

Grand Theft Auto IV: Don't believe everything that you read.
Another day, another drama about Grand Theft Auto IV. To follow up from yesterday's story about an alleged statement from Take Two Interactive claiming to explain what has been cut from the Australian version of the game, I've just gotten off the phone with Rockstar Games.

They confirmed that the statement currently circulating is not correct, and any rumours that have come from it are just that - rumours.

Personally, I'll be very happy once the game's released and people can concentrate on Niko and his escapades, rather than sitting around fretting about what may or may not have been included, what may or may not have been cut, and why Australia (and New Zealand) are missing out on things that the rest of the world gets to enjoy.

Bring on April 29th, I say. Hype should be about the game, not about the politics.

Grand Theft Auto 4 - Edits allegedly revealed?
There's been another update in the Grand Theft Auto 4 censorship debate. Following the announcement yesterday that New Zealand would be getting the Australian-edited version, a few of you have pointed out an alleged response from Take 2 Interactive, Rockstar's parent company. At this stage, this statement is rumour and has not been confirmed - but as soon as we hear anything official from Rockstar, we'll share it with you.

UPDATE: I've just heard from Rockstar, and they have announced that this "statement" is completely false.

On a related note, I spent some time on the phone to Australian Customs, to figure out some of the legalities regarding bringing the game into the country.

Grand Theft Auto IV: Edited for New Zealand Too
Those of you who were hoping to pick up your copy of Grand Theft Auto IV from New Zealand, to avoid the Australian edited version, you're outta luck. We've just caught wind that at least one New Zealand-based online game retailer will only be stocking the Australian version of the game.

In an email reply to an Australian customer, the store explains that they have only recently been informed they will be receiving the edited version, and apologises for the situation.
