A lot of PSP news this week, and hardly any of it applicable to Aussies, sadly. Here's one interesting snippet that will no doubt apply to every PSP owner under the sun, though: Sony have announced a new social networking application for the PSP. It sounds much like a kind of portable Playstation Home-lite.
Since they haven't been able to come up with anything better than "motion controller" for the ping-pong wand, I had kind of despaired of Sony's naming abilities, but you have to admit, "PSP Room" is pretty cute.

Sony Online Entertainment's latest MMO, the family-friendly, genre-confused Free Realms, is now officially launched for PC. A mix of traditional MMORPG elements, mini-game collections and social networking, Free Realms' aim is to provide a safe and fun online location for players of all ages - with a special emphasis on youngsters and their parents. Now curious gamers can get hands-on with this odd concept and see for themselves what the fuss is about.

I always think virtual world applications are a bit odd. Their target demographic seems to be those who spent a large proportion of their lives online, and yet, stereotypically, those of us who spend a great deal of time online are neither particularly skilled nor overly interested in socialising. Whether or not this is true, Sony's bid to enter the social network space, Playstation Home, seems to have gone down much like a lead balloon around here, at least. Nevertheless, Sony Online Entertainment are making their own bid to conquer human interactions with their odd little MMORPG-slash-virtual-world-space, Free Realms.

Sony have hit a milestone that they're proud of. As of today, twenty million registrations for the PlayStation Network have been made, after only two years and three months since the network first went live on the 11th of November, 2006.
The PlayStation Network, which is free to browse, can be accessed from the PS3, PSP and PC, with a large number of on-line services - including multi player gaming, chat, messaging, and downloads provided to over 55 countries around the world. Part of the PlayStation network, the PlayStation Store, offers over 14,500 pieces of "diverse digital content", including downloadable UMD games, demos, and more.

We told you last week that the voice chat capabilities of PlayStation Home had been temporarily suspended thanks to the newly-released patch. Well, fortunately we can tell you this week that the 1.05 update, scheduled to arrive today - Monday December 22 - will re-introduce voice chat.
Allowing for the fun that is time differences, within the next 24 hours or so, you'll soon be able to talk to each other - voice to voice - within your personal space and the clubhouses.

One of the perils of living on the wrong side of the world is that international downtimes very often coincide with exactly the moment that we Aussies would like to sit down and play a few online games of something.
Tonight is no exception, with a last-minute announcement from Sony that their new social networking project Home will be closed for several hours due to extended service maintenance, which will also see the service updated from v1.03 to 1.04. While things may change, at this stage, we are expecting things to resume in around three hours from now (12:30am Friday, Adelaide time / 6am Thursday, Pacific).

In a bit of an early holiday accident, it would appear that someone's spiked the eggnog being given to Sony's PlayStation Home server hamsters. Sony is reporting that since the hamsters can't run the wheels on the beta servers, Home users will experience outages and lag. They are working on sobering them up by switching the liquid in their bottles with black coffee, and hope to have the service back online for all of the Home testers soon.
Need something else to do while you wait? Don't worry - we're here for you with a couple of suggestions.

Just yesterday, Steven reported that Sony's PlayStation Home service may well be available "before the end of the year". Apparently, a little over 24 hours can make all the difference in these things, with the rumour blown out of the water in a slightly different way than we'd expected.
News tonight has landed on my desk that the PlayStation Home Beta will be available for all PS3 users with PlayStation Network connectivity - starting December 11th, 2008. The information came out of the UK, so I wouldn't expect this one until tomorrow evening, or even Friday morning.

Sony's PlayStation 3 console has seen anumber of setbacks in its short life. Despite the strong promise of exclusive titles, market penetration and hardware sales have been notably lower than offerings from Nintendo and Microsoft, despite a recent study revealing that there could be more PlayStation 3 consoles in Australian homes than Xbox 360s.
Despite any rampant loyalty amongst the fan bases of either consoles, Sony does have one trick up its sleeve - the Second Life-inspired online service - Home, which recently saw an influx of beta invitations released. Following this, it has been reported that the full service could launch as early as the 17th of December.

While we haven't heard anything about it for quite some time, Sony's upcoming virtual world, Home is one of the most anticipated things set to hit the Playstation 3 in the near future.
In Home, the player is given an opportunity to create an avatar ala Second Life, and enter into a realistic world populated by other Playstation 3 owners. For those who are keen to get their hands on Home early, in the form of beta testing, Sony have announced that some new invitations would be arriving shortly in order to expand the beta.

So the 2008 E3 Media and Business Summit has wrapped up. Bitter fanboys are sure to have run out of tears, at least temporarily, while tired journalists are no doubt catching up on some much needed sleep. I have no doubt that many of you have long lists of games you're now salivating over even more than before – better start putting those pennies aside. On the other hand, those of us on the reviewing side of things are currently wondering how on Earth we're going to manage to cover all of the fourth quarter's games without going insane.
This week, we'll reflect on the events that transpired during the three manufacturer press conferences and discuss our thoughts and any potential ramifications, and we'll also look at a few of the best games that were on show.

The Sony press conference held earlier this week at E3, while largely full of sales data and statistics did include a few interesting points. A new 80GB PlayStation 3 was confirmed, along with a new Platinum games collection, and some major first-party titles were given release dates.
...all that's well and good, until you realise that they were all confirmed for the US gamers, with no announcements for other areas.
It's okay though, a Sony Computer Entertainment Europe event was held later in the week, where a bunch of PAL representatives were told the good news.

One thing I've found particularly surprising over the last week was the rate at which my interest in Grand Theft Auto IV rapidly declined. I beat the game on Sunday night, yet haven't felt compelled to turn it back on since, which is strange, given how much I had enjoyed it. It's really lacking that level of supplementary content we saw in Vice City and San Andreas; much more effort went into the story, and the game is better for it, but I'd have liked more to do after the narrative was wrapped up.
This week's column is the final part of our Grievances series, focusing on Sony. We'll also take a look at the godawful Survivor game from late last decade, and give Guinness World Records' 2008 Gamers Edition the review treatment.

You can't say that you're really surprised by the news, but Sony have just announced that their brainchild, PlayStation Home will now be released later than expected. Originally scheduled for "September or October 2007" (that's last year), it seems that the project's not done yet, and could do with a little more time in development.
They've invited more applicants from the pool of PS3 users to participate in the Expanded Closed Beta, which has been extended until the middle of the year. This move has pushed the Open Beta service back to "Fall 2008" (that's Novemberish, hopefully).

Last week, I told you about Home, the 3D online user community service for the PS3.
While a lot of things were explained, people still had a lot of questions. This week, I received a mysterious document full of questions and answers (yes! both!) about what will be involved, who can do what, and how they can do it.
Short version - you're looking at around a 500mb download, with up to 50 friends, and when it's launched in October, things will probably still be in development.
Long version - 10 pages. Read at your peril.

In one of the worst-kept secrets of the year, Sony finally announced their "first-of-its-kind" 3D online user community service for the PS3 at GDC overnight. The new service - Home - is scheduled for a world-wide release "later this year". Users will be able to create their own avatar, and then explore a real-time virtual community (similar to a sort of detailed 3D PS3 game). On the surface, it's a sort of... non-cartoon Mii meets Second Life meets Xbox Live.
Home was a key element of SCEI Worldwide Studios' President Phil Harrison's keynote presentation - "Game 3.0: Developing and Creating for the 3rd Age of Videogames" - and we've got a shiny video, just for you.
