When we were in San Francisco for GDC SF 2009 recently, we met a very tall man, who knew a lot about destroying things. His name was Luke Schneider, and he is the Design Architect on Red Faction: Guerrilla - a position he's held for four years, and one which sees him dealing with all sorts of game mechanics, from aiming, movement and cover, to physics, weapons, camera shakes and (of course) destruction.
We sat down with Luke, to find out what Volition, Inc had been working on with Red Faction: Guerrilla - with a particularly destructive flavour. Why not check it out - and our on-the-spot video, while you wait for the Multiplayer Demo for the game to download on your Xbox 360 or PS3?

Saboteur, Saboteur... Wait, wasn't that the "other" upcoming title from Pandemic, which got kind of overlooked in all the Mercenaries 2 and Lord of the Rings: Conquest hype? Oh, dear - whatever happened to that, and given the rather apathetic reception both of those titles received, do we care? Well, EA are hoping we do, and have sent along a nice little fact sheet and a bunch of pretty new screens and concept artworks to try and reel back our possibly flagging interest - and much to my surprise, they just might succeed!

As we watch 2008 log off and 2009 jump into gear, we are looking back at some of our highlights for all the fantastic games released this year. It wasn't easy and with so many big titles and great games coming out there was much debate in the Newsbot den as to what game should take out the Games on Net 2008 Awards.
What will be labelled the top games in the consoles? Which was our favourite PC hit? What other awards do we have to give out? All will be explained inside as we round up the year by letting you guys know what we did and didn't like.

Each week, we collate the most popular stories that we published over the past seven days, plus a line-up of the most downloaded files added in the same time frame. That way, in case you missed something, you can catch up in one helpful little spot, every Monday morning.
Much like our "Monday" Screens, the digest is a little bit late this week, due to unforeseen circumstances. First person shooters appeared to be popular this week, with Call of Duty: World at War's beta information proving to be the most popular, followed by our review of S.T.A.L.K.E.R Clear Sky, and our discussion with Far Cry 2 lead designer Clint Hocking and producer Louis-Pierre Pharand.

We nearly missed this week's video game charts - so much else is going on back here behind the scenes! ...but it's okay, we've got you all the details on the game sales in Australia, in the week ending September 14th.
As a nation, we're still investing in motion-sensing Nintendo peripherals rather than gym passes, PC gamers are learning all about evolution, those mercenary Xbox 360 gamers set the world on fire, PS3 gamers throwback to an era past, hearing the third call of duty, DS gamers still hanging out with Professor Kawashima, and both the PS2 and PSP prefer an adorably animated movie tie-in.

It has been a huge week, not only did our site get a nice face lift (isn't it pretty!) but there has been some amazing trailers that have come out. Some has been delayed videos from Games Convention last week, others have been companies pushing their Q4 products. We also see the return of Our Favourite Trailers.
This week we get a lesson in immersion in Africa and go on tour. But if Early isn't your thing, there is some different worlds and even space to tempt you. However if you like your combat you can either blow it all up or maybe get up close and personal with blades.

The ABC's gaming show Good Game is shown on Monday nights @ 9pm on ABC2 with a repeat on ABC1 on Friday nights after triple j TV. As if that wasn't enough, there's always the downloadable vodcast on the website, too!
This week, we take a look at Mercenaries 2 and Trauma Centre: Second Opinion, and Lux returns, to examin the inherent human need to play. If that's not enough, we also look at our Good Game Game interns, and check out the history of Mr. Will Wright.

This year's E3 will feature all sorts of upcoming games, developers and publishers, as well as these guys - Brain Zoo Studios, who are a leading digital media animation studio. Their work will be splashed all over the show floor in LA, featured in the cinematic showcase for Sega's mysterious Alpha Protocol. It's also tucked neatly into the very impressive Mercenaries 2: World in Flames from Pandemic, as well as the eagerly-anticipated Destroy All Humans: Path of Furon from THQ, both of which will be on show!

Mid-year sales tend to be pretty awful, but one particular Australian retailer was running out a lot of stock for around the $5 mark, mainly on the PC, PS2, DS and Xbox 360. Needless to say, this week, I came home a couple of hundred dollars poorer and weighed down by bags of games, yet could not find many of the titles I wanted due to the store having been raided by people buying up multiple copies of the one game to trade or sell on eBay. Such is life. I'm still trying to wrestle my way through Alone in the Dark on the Xbox 360, a game with some stunning ideas, but absolutely horrendous controls and far too many bugs and glitches.
This week, The Warp Pipe will look at the current Q3 release list, gauging the perceived level of hype and giving a brief impression as to the quality of each game.

Pandemic Studios, the bods behind Star Wars: Battlefront are turning their hands to a new, equally well-loved storyline - announcing the development of The Lord of the Rings: Conquest.
Set in the world created by J.R.R. Tolkein and depicted in the Academy Award-winning films, The Lord of the Rings: Conquest will allow players to fight the entirety of the epic battles - any way they want. And, for the first time, if you don't want to crusade as the good guys, the option is there to conquer Middle-Earth as part of Sauron's evil army. Bring on Cave-trolls, the Balrog, Oliphaunts and even Sauron himself!

You may have heard the rumours, but it is my duty to inform you that yes - Electronic Arts has acquired VG Holding Corp., who owns both BioWare and Pandemic Studios.
Both of these companies have created some of the best-quality games in the industry (BioWare bringing NeverWinter Nights, Baldur's Gate, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, as well as Pandemic's Destroy All Humans!, Full Spectrum Warrior and Dark Reign 2) which will give EA a much-needed boost in the areas of action, adventure and role-playing games.

It seems that people want to ban games all over the world. Games can get banned for a number of reasons. Generally they are related to infringing on ratings board classifications or exceeding them (as happens in Australia because we do not have an 'R' rated category). Germany has strict guidelines for the release and use of violence in video games. As such, games are heavily modified before they are released in Germany. However, several places in Mexico are considering banning Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter 2 because it is: "a crime against the intellectual capacity of Juarez residents." I think that saying a game brow beats them is a new classification for banning games.

Mercenaries 2: World in Flames is the latest game to drop off the Playstation 3 exclusive list with EA announcing that it will now be shipped simultaneously on four platforms.
This is another game in a ever increasing stream of games moving from PS3 exclusive to multi-platform including Bioshock, Full Auto 2 and Unreal Tournament 2007 (In the console world). This has to help make things harder for the more expensive and very late Playstation 3 against the already very established Xbox 360 .
